electricity from the drinking water supply

Featured Replies

I had this idea a few years ago for a small inline turbine that you could hook to your water line coming into your house.  I had no idea how much power could be generated with it but apparently (as always) Im a few years to late with my idea: (this is larger scale but microhydropower systems apparently exist - I saw a video of that used gutters/rainwater to generate electricity)

and I'd really like to know why all skyscrapers don't make use of the anthill effect by placing turbines in shafts that run the height of the building.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

Sounds good, but remember that the energy to turn that little turbine has to come from somewhere.

It will act like a pressure regulator and reduce your water flow and thus pressure.

I've known some people that I think could do that and if it were possible, it would be a boon for Taco Bell.

This. You may generate some power at the end, but you need to use that much and more at the pumping station. There is no free lunch here.

I make simFDR, the most advanced flight data recorder for FSX, Prepar3D and X-Plane.

Plus, this would only work when water is actually flowing, which at the very least would require leaving a tap open.

The plant in the video I posted says their system is gravity fed.  I'm not sure what the original source is but they mention rainwater quite a bit so its probably a reservoir.  Its just smaller scale hydroelectric.

It seems to me that the water is going to flow anyway so unless an area suffers from low water pressure, you might as well use the flow for a good purpose.  Every little bit helps.

My guess is that space occupied by turbines is space not occupied by paying tenants.
