Mods or addons can be remotely banned or forcibly disabled?

Featured Replies

Reading this Aerosoft Otter sound thread. I'm not sure if I'm reading and comprehending it correctly.

It sounds(no pun intended) like since you are always forced online in FS2020, FS2020 can do file checks and if so flagged by a content creator, they can at any time 'disable' their addon [plane, scenery, sound pack, etc].

Is there any truth to this? Will tweaking and file editing start to become prohibited or limited?

I'm not fond of big brother tactics with any software I buy to personally use. Again I'm trying to learn and understand FS2020 and addon limits.

Please don't give Mathis any ideas.

I've been around too long to just up and say "Oh, no, something like that would never, ever, happen".

No.

The base game is updated on a regular basis. ‘Sim updates’ as Asobo call them are unavoidable as the devs are unable to support older versions. In software development today there is nothing unusual about this. We are waiting on the much anticipated Sim update X at the moment.

Add ons such as planes and scenery are accessed from the ‘community’ folder which is not subject to these updates.

If the producer of an add on issues an update to their product this is separate to the base game and there is no way you can be ‘forced’ to download these.

Mods to add ons are really a separate issue.

I believe what happened with the excellent sound mod, was that they asked flightsim.to to take it down while mentioning some king of copyright or licencing issue.  Not sure why, as it was basically a mod to the sound config file (just text).

So 1 - you can't download it any more, then 2 - I believe the next update of the aircraft (which was needed) changed a few things so that the old sound mod wouldn't work properly.
Such a shame.  It was really causing no harm, but I suspect they were a bit embarrassed about a free mod and cheap add-on sound kit being a zillion times better that their own effort.
Anyway, it's done now, and no going back.  I won't abandon the Twin Otter, but I really hope they can do something.  It needs some work for sure.

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.
