August 11, 20223 yr Author UK heatwave: Four-day extreme heat warning comes into effect https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-62499044 Quote An amber extreme heat warning has come into force, with temperatures forecast to hit 37C (99F) in some parts of the UK over the next four days. The Met Office alert for southern and central England and parts of Wales runs from midnight on Thursday until Sunday. It has also issued its highest alert for fire severity over the weekend, warning there is an "exceptional" risk of blazes spreading in many places. The heatwave will likely affect health, transport and working conditions. There is also an increased risk of water safety incidents, the Met Office warned.
August 11, 20223 yr It’s wonderful. Been swimming every evening for the last ten days. Nice coastal breeze means it’s 24 sitting on Sidmouth beach but 34 in my garden one and a half miles inland😲

Plenty taking the oportunity to take to the ocean. Lots of boats and swimmers. I'll be careful when I go for a walk though, UV is high. How's Sidmouth beach for people? Busy? Been to most places in Devon, but don't recall going to Sidmouth beach. Edited August 11, 20223 yr by martin-w
August 11, 20223 yr We are having a one day cooling period Martin. It will only be 31 today. Tomorrow we get back to our normal 36 to 37. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.

Not too busy as it’s mostly shingle along the east Devon coast and ‘select Sidmouth’ has never had the kind of tourist infrastructure that somewhere like Paignton supports. As you know, being one of the locals means being able to pick and choose when to venture out to avoid the tourist rush and when the tide is right we get sand too😃.
August 11, 20223 yr Moderator A longer but less severe heatwave. Currently 32°C in my garden compared to 38.7°C last month. I almost need a jumper. 😁 Due to end by Monday when the Channel Islands might get its first rain for a while. Sat in the shade and read my book. The days of frying under the sun for a tan are behind me. Ray (Cheshire, England). Well, very easy to find a beach with minimal or no people at all here. Even the really popular beaches are sparsely populated. Having spent all my life in a town in the Midlands, finding myself by the ocean is a pleasure. Trouble is, I stay too long staring at the waves and risk sunburn. 🙄 Its not so much the beeches that the tourists descend on here, is mostly the capital where the cruise ships arrive. 22 degrees at the moment.

Our reservoirs are 74% full apparently, low for this time of year so we have been asked to be careful. Frying under the sun burns your bald spot Ray. 🙄

Difficult for Met Office to be specific with forecasts of showers. You might get a downpour and Jersey misses it completely. Luck of the drawer. Ray (Cheshire, England). August 11, 20223 yr 33 degrees in Exeter today compared to 37 degrees a few weeks ago. My office at home is still reaching 30 degrees in the evening which is unbearable. I'm not really one for hot weather at all so bring on the winter I say! 🤣

Whilst the heat is uncomfortable it can be alleviated quite cheaply. Feet in bucket of cool water will help. Gas central heating will be infinitely more expensive and unaffordable for many. I'm strange because I actually don't mind being cold. It has to be absolutely freezing before my heating goes on. I wear shorts almost all year round. I bought a small fan recently that you put water and ice inside to decrease the air temp coming out. Its actually quite effective until the ice melts. 🤣
