How to get GA traffic when using AIG, ST, etc. - UPDATED

Yes, but if I disable the traffic.bgl via .json file, I get (as wanted) only the GA traffic, no airliners anymore.

My understanding, and I could very well be wrong, is that if you select to disable the default traffic file when starting AIG Manager, it disables the entire file. That means no AI air traffic at all, either airliners and GA. When you run AIG you will of course then insert AIG airliners back into the sim but you will still be missing GA aircraft. By editing the json file as per Phantoms mod and running the Community folder add on from the same mod, you get both AIG airliners and MSFS default GA in the sim. The best of both worlds, so to speak.

If you are not running this mod, and happy not to have GA AI, then it is best to disable the traffic file though as you will otherwise get MSFS default fugly airliners in the mix with the AIG ones.

With every sim update in recent times, the json file has been overwritten and has to be edited again. This was the case with SU10 too.

As far as I understand, it is a slight mixture of both: if you leave the default traffic.bgl enabled, you will get the default AIRLINER traffic as soon as you set anything different thant 0% inside your sim for offline AI traffic. If you only want GA, you either need to let AIG disable the default traffic.bgl (by klicking "yes" when prompted) or, as I wrote, simply remove it out of the .json file. Then, you can be sure that selecting "offline AI traffic" and e.g. 75% inside the sim will NOT result in any airliner traffic to be shown, but only the modified GA traffic file from flightsim.to.

The reason I prefer the .json modification approach are some unconfirmed reports that MSFS does not really like looking for files that do not exist. If you let AIG disable (well, rather rename...) the default traffic.bgl, exactly this happens: the .json still directs MSFS to a traffic.bgl file that can no longer be found...

Have anyone compared @Phantoms method with the one available from Simmarket? Yeah, I know the latter one used to be freeware at FSTO. Does anyone have any insight whether there's any benefit with the payware option vs Phantoms one?

EDIT: This is EGKA Shoreham Brighton with Phantoms mod. AI offline at 100%, ground aircraft density at 0%.

And this is with the Simmarket option (updated 17th Sept), same settings:

I've edited the layout.json as per the instructions.

From those images, seems the SimMarket one adds different models? That twin parked on the grass for example is not one of MSFS default aircraft used as GA AI.

I get plenty GA AI with Phantoms mod though.

Hm, didn’t notice that the models were different. I’ll do some more testing. Very strange that I only saw 1 AI GA with Phantoms and 15 with the payware, same settings. Need to find a good GA airport to test, I think Manchester Barton is an Asobo enhanced one.

  • 1 month later...

I just setup this mod for the first time. This seems to only work for traffic in the air. It seems to have no effect at removing airliners on the ground. I've got GA-Stock-Aircraft-Traffic in the Community folder. I updated the layout.json. I did let AIG rename trafficAircraft.bgl already, so it should all be good. I have AIG and FSLTL installed, but for testing this mod I have not activated either one, so I should be seeing no airliners. However, this is what I'm observing. When I use LittleNavMap to look at AI traffic, I am seeing GA flying around, but on the ground I'm seeing about 50% airliners and 50% GA.

For my settings, I have:

Aircraft traffic type: AI Offline
AI traffic density: 20
Ground aircraft density: 10

Normally I have AI traffic density to 0 and Ground aircraft density to 1 per AIG setup, but if I don't change those, I see only 1 or 2 aircraft. So I'm assuming this mod expects us to increase the sliders to increase the GA traffic.

If I crank both sliders to 100, I see a lot of only GA aircraft flying, as expected, but on the ground I see half the airline gates occupied with airliners, and some GA in the small parking ramps. I'm testing at KCLT, the payware version, in case that matters.

I wonder if SU11 has changed something that is affecting this mod.

I tried setting this up using the alternate method, but same results.

It works on both ground and in the air, within the limits of the current messed up AI aircraft system.

I believe you should have Ground Aircraft Density set to zero. If you don’t do this, the sim will inject static aircraft to fill these “ground slots”. They will be neither representative of liveries or models that would be found at the airport in real life. They are pulled randomly to fill the quota based on your Ground Aircraft Density setting.

If you are running the mod as you are, when asked to disable the traffic bgl, you should decline. By selecting to disable it, you are effectively disabling the mod. You want that file active. AIG only ask you if you want to disable it because the mod was not yet developed when AIG came out and not everyone might be using it.
The mod allows you to have both sim GA and real world airliner traffic simultaneously, provided the in sim settings are set correctly.

The issue now is that AI traffic in general is poorly implemented in the sim. This can only be fixed by Asobo it seems. No matter what route you choose for AI traffic, you are going to see crazy antics by AI aircraft on the ground and in the air.

Ok thanks. I wasn't clear. Yes AIG had renamed the file a week ago, but now setting up this mod, I copied in its bgl file with the name "trafficAircraft.bgl", so it's there.

So in setting Ground Aircraft Density to 0, and AI Aircraft Traffic Density to 100, I see no GA activity at the airport. Yes I see lots of GA planes within hundreds of miles flying around in Little Navmap, but unfortunately none at the airport, landing and taking off. Can you explain how GA should be appearing on the ground? Is the BGL file supposed to provide GA flight plans for every airport in MSFS? Surprising there are none for KCLT.

The bgl is allowing the sims default GA AI to be active. It does not add any AI of its own. Think of it as just a switch to turn the sims GA AI on. The Traffic Density slider in the sim will then be controlling only the GA AI. Setting this to 100% would give you max GA AI but will have zero effect on airliners as that is controlled entirely by AIG.

Allow some time after entering your aircraft at an airport to see GA AI buzzing around. I have them moving around. I run the slider ant 50%. Often they do odd things like race off into the bushes at speed on suicide missions but that is on Asobo to fix. So you can be glad they are just parked or absent. The moment they move they behave ridiculously.😁 Try another airport tho, maybe that airport has no GA AI for some reason.

Have you tried at different small airports. I would like to say that all airports have GA based at them, but looking through the flightplans (that came from the stock MSFS flightplan file) that's just not the case. In addition, you may have GA that fly to and from an airport, but just are in the air while you are flying and many of the GA do not sit idle long. Trying different times of the day or night may reveal them at the airport.

If you want to see their flightplans,  the airports/aircraft used, etc. you can open the traffic file up with AIFP which can be found at  http://stuff4fs.com/open.asp?Folder=AIFP&JS=TRUE. That's the program I used to take the stock MSFS traffic bgl file, and remove the commercial traffic. Unfortunately, I also removed the JMB VL-3 and it's associated flights to stay under the traffic limit. You can add flights for any airport you want if you desire. It took me all of maybe 3 hours to make the mod from first running AIFP, so anyone should be able to do it.

And lastly, make sure that you either tweak the layout.json or use the alternative install method again as the SU11 update once again change those files.

Wow I appreciate that additional information!! I am focused mainly on one airport right now, KROA, the one I live next to. A mid-sized airport that has mainly regional airliners and lots of GA. I'll try updating that file to increase the activity at the airport.

What I do not really get is the more than tremendous FPS hit using this GA traffic mod. Or something is wrong on my side, who knows... If I am on EBBR for example, I get solid 45FPS. When I add FSLTL traffic or AIG traffic (at 50%), FPS drop expectedly around 5-6FPS down to roughly 40. However, turning on AI traffic offline in the settings to get the GA AI traffic instantly drops FPS by another 10 digits down below 30, even if there is almost no GA traffic even shown on EBBR. This can be observed also anywhere else, offline AI traffic instantly lowers FPS by around 20% no matter where I am and how much GA traffic is shown.

For me, due to this huge FPS impact, those GA traffic «solutions» are of no use currently...

Wow, that is lot of FPS loss for what seems to be rather simple models.

@AnkH I'm not seeing that on my end.

Make sure you've disabled the default trafficAircraft.bgl file by either editing the layout.json or overwriting the trafficAircraft.bgl file with the alternative method. These changes were overwritten with the SU11 update so they have to be done again or else you'll get both the GA mod and default traffic both at the same time.

Another thing you might want to try. If you're a nvidia user, update to the latest driver. I was having horrible FPS on the last driver before this one. After updating to 526.98 I think I'm getting the best FPS I've ever got and may just stay on this driver in the future as long as I can.

I am an AMD user, but this bloody .json adjustment of course slipped my attention again, thanks for the heads up!
