It depends on your hardware; if your CPU outperforms your GPU (e.g. you have an older GPU), the improvements in CPU usage with DX12 might not help much. This is one of the things they didn't fix in the for the release. It was discussed at great lengths in the official beta forums. I recall that this may have been an issue in W10 but not in W11 which deals with HDR a lot better. I can certainly remember having problems in W10. With DX12 all those 20 threads will be utilized. This is one of the advantages of DX12 as I see it - CPU utilization is way better than with DX11. Might as well get your money's worth for that Alder Lake; it's an excellent CPU. And I'd consider running Win11 as well (if you're not) due to the improved thread director with Alder Lake. 7950X3D | RTX 4090 | 64GB DDR5

September 25, 20223 yr I use a RTX 2070 Super. I did several experiments between DLSS (quality, performance, ultra performance, and with AMD sharp values of 0 and 200), and almost always the same FPS, regardless of whether you use quality, performance, ultra-performance, sharp 0 or sharp 200. It just varies 1 or 2 fps. Then I retested TAA with 70% render scaling, and the FPS continued the same, but not so smooth, i think. This, with the DX11. Honestly, I don't know what to use.

Diskcleaner for shaders shifting between DX11 and 12? Thanks Michael Moe I'm on 1080ti still and just tried dx12. Runs smoother for me. Only gained a few FPS but its a lot smoother and i was able to run LOD slightly higher. I saw try it with the new studio drivers. I'm not going back to DX11.

However, many are reporting higher VRAM usage with DX12, and some are pointing out the risk of exceeding available VRAM, leading to RAM being used, with much lower latency. So it's probably a good idea to have a look in dev mode if DX12 is not giving good performance. If VRAM usage is too high - lower the settings. 7950X3D | RTX 4090 | 64GB DDR5

Shadow maps at max seem to use a bit more, but not that much. I just tested and clouds, terrain and object LODs doesn't seem to impact VRAM much. Having a TLOD of 10 or 400 and GPU mem is about the same, reported by dev mode. Edited September 26, 20223 yr by Cpt_Piett 7950X3D | RTX 4090 | 64GB DDR5

Just tested the effects of texture resolution on VRAM: Low: 8.5GB Ultra: 11GB Same airport, all other settings the same. Just noted "GPU mem" in dev mode just after loading a flight at EGKA. Hence, if people are struggling with DX12 and VRAM being excessively used, leading to stutters, the most efficient way to lower VRAM usage could be to lower the texture resolution. 7950X3D | RTX 4090 | 64GB DDR5
