Third time’s a Charm - NOT - bad bad weather KEYW Keywest

Featured Replies

on my way from KEYW Key West/South Florida to Marco Island/Florida in a small GA airplane,

winds gusting 41 kts, clouds: FEW 009 at nearby KAPF Naples, but more like 200-300 ft at KMKY. I gave up after the 3rd missed approach. great for MVFR training. can you make it?

not exactly VFR conditions, which would call for:

below 10,000 feet,

3 SM visibility:

500 feet below clouds;

1,000 feet above clouds; and

at least 2,000 feet lateral separation from the clouds.

with pattern altitude of 700 ft. and 500 ft. below clouds, 1.200 ft. would have been the absolute legal minimum altitude. but try that with gusting winds of 23-41 kts. 😀

very nice.

Do you always fly with all those counters on the screen?

Coming very soon according to the FSW Discord

thx for posting, went straight to KEYW to take the CRJ for a spin, decided to fly to KMIA though, all fine once out of the soup, arrival then pretty smooth

Florida east coast that's easy, that's where everybody flies business as usual. we are talking the wild wild west coast where nobody dares to fly to:

Install this mod,  https://flightsim.to/file/16674/we-love-vfr-region-2

Then see if you can find the TARS just NE of KEYW / KNQX.   There will be one moored at ground level,   and one tethered at approximately 10,000 ft.

Try landing at 2NC0 with low visibility and a strong crosswind with gusts. I guarantee it won't be easy 🙂

you can crash there even with 5 kts and 10 miles visibility:

Temperature/Dew Point: 11°C /-2°C
Lowest Cloud Condition: Clear
Wind Speed/Gusts, Direction: 5 knots / , 230°
Lowest Ceiling: None
Visibility: 10 miles

the single runway was 2,875 feet long by 50 feet wide. The airplane approached runway "high and fast," touched down within the first third, and bounced about 10 to 20 feet above the surface.

A post-impact fire consumed the accident airplane, and two of the four parked airplanes.

Oh, I know. This was my first attempt I think. My rationale for not using the beta range was the uphill slope and that I had more than enough runway left to come to a complete stop. Going down the hill at the end of the runway I felt pretty silly 🙂

coming in very slow is something beginners often avoid for fear of stalling, you need experience and confidence to approach slow and be right at or only slightly above stall speed in a light GA airplane. on one of my first cross countries I came in way too fast, probably some 90 kts, with the end of the grass strip approaching quickly so inevitably I ran out of more grass strip, and there was the end when I finally TOGA'ed. when I finally landed on another better suited asphalt runway on my 3rd attempt I discovered some tuft of grass and yellow paint from the REILs on my wheel fairings. so I must have lifted off just in time trying to avoid becoming another chapter in Kathryns report😊.

It would be heartbreaking to watch his collection get destroyed for a second time,   let alone having it happen to you.   Andrew was a Category 5.
