I did a thing

(btw, the guns and bombs work, but I'm _still_ getting to grips with handling her)

Didn't find any bugs to report. about 30 minutes in VR taking off and landing, replay of the last one, think I'm ready to actually plan a flight with it - didn't crash or glitch (sim, VR or the plane) once.

The plane is freeware

https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/51201-supermarine-spitfire-f-mk-ix-m63-s-update/

I dont think I've made any changes to it...

Scenery is lvl16 ortho edited with WED to more closely match where I actually fly

If you want to see how closely it matches where I actually fly see dobanovci 27/08/22 pt1 and 2 on the same channel.

Thx for sharing @mSparks👍

Was that in XP12?

I'll have to find the original aircraft at the .Org...

Hmmm, flaps in the Spitfire act more like drag chutes 🙂 you're not supposed to takeoff with flaps .. 😉

One thing I'll try to check if I can get it to work in XP12 is the position of the elevator while flying straight&level at typical cruise settings ( should be trimmed down )... most sims don't capture this peculiarity...

If I remember correctly from your previous messages on this forum, this place ("Balkan Helicopters" or so in Google Maps) is like your favorite place in the sim (and in real life as well?), right ?

If so, why did you get only zoom level 16 tiles for that area ? I understand you want to keep good FPS level for your helicopter flights and you're kind of more focused on the physics engine realism than the graphics, ok, but still, level 16 only seems a bit too low, no ?

Its where my flights generally start and finish

fruska gora, kopoanik, zlatibor are some nice destinations close, or international via lybe first.

I settled on 16 as my scenery level because:

Higher and you can see stuff baked in like cars or vegetation, fps can turn into garbage and it takes a load more disk space. I have lvl16 installed from Scotland to Greece.

yes, on the link I gave to the org without changes (XP11 version of the plane), you can tell by the... trees/forest.. XP11 can't do that.

good info, I concede I havent done any of the groundschool needed for flying planes, or even read the manual that comes with it tbh.

Well, and indeed this model correctly displays the elevator slightly deflected down at cruise !

Edited it to make the tailwheel castoring.

The turn & slip indicator has the needles mixed - the sideslip is indicating bank, and the way around. Don't know if it's easy to fix?

The aircraft appeared to me to have overdone Radii of Gyration, but it's using default values so, maybe some trick in the design which I haven't had the chance to figure. I would like to make it less sluggish in all axis.

But overall very nice !!!

The field with the grass looks really nice. The rest is a bit...empty.

one of the reasons that only the vegetation ever really concerned me, - all around there is really empty, particularly to the north of LYBT, just flat, featureless fields with one or two tiny villages and sets of powerlines.

Bit further north and hit Fruška gora, pretty, lovely winery there with great service and phenomenal food, used to be pretty bad in sim with the old trees, but should be better now.

Its nice to just enjoy the sim experience for just the sake of it for a change, passed my RL checkride a few weeks ago, so not desperate for practice time, most of the 744 time is more "under the hood" stuff. It was great to just copy over the spitfire folder from XP11, throw the VR headset on and lose half an hour taking it for a spin with no major issues, not crashing, and all the scenery just feeling completely familiar because Ive spent so much time looking at it from the air already.

Find the object file containing the indicator, open it with a text editor and swap the datarefs.

According to the orthos, there should at least be some treelines, which are not represented as 3D  models.

Have you tried X-World Europe?

I need an airliner for 12 because all third party ones with custom MFDs are broken for good at the moment (AMD...). How does the 744 do?

Doing way too much work in XP lately, so I may just have to do something like that for a change of pace.

yeah, thing is it is mostly just empty, they aren't really trees missing, the are low level bushes and mounds.

These are pretty much the same view

That is basically what I was playing with right before deciding to play with the spitfire (the trees along the water just after I turn right), also as found in the earlier discussion, MS isn't even doing lvl16... sooo

Wow, as if MSFS is lower resolution than level 16, that's disgraceful.

No wonder people think MSFS is getting good fps when its running its scenery resolution at 1/4 or 1/8th that of a typical XPlane setup 😯

Hmm are you sure about this ?

Zoom 16 would be 2m/pixel right ? While zoom 17 is 1m/pixel. I'm pretty sure MSFS does ar least zoom 17.

EDIT: just as a quick test, here is how that place looks like in MSFS with default scenery. The building is incorrect shape for sure, but the ground texture sure look higher resolution than zoom 16, don't you think ?

I think MSFS uses some technique to increase the apparent detail of the ground at low altitude (e.g. to "create" grass and hay, in your screenshot above) which might not have been visible on the original satellite photo. And to good effect! I think also FlightGear has a similar rendering option where it adds detail to the ground textures.

That's another thing that would be nice to have in XP.

EDIT: Here's how it looks in FlightGear (additional ground detail enabled on the right half).

It can definitely go higher, that's why I was surprised to see it lower

You are right, there is indeed some special detail (mask or such) on ground in MSFS, with a specific texture for grass and for gravel areas for example. That being said, if you look around the building in the screenshot, you'll notice we can see distinctively the parked cars, their contours and the space between them. Such detail wouldn't be visible in zoom 16. Maybe zoom 17 wouldn't be sufficient either, so I guess MSFS is actually displaying a higher resolution than zoom 17. However, it might be doing so only at short distances or low altitude ?

Back on the autogen topic, I believe nothing can beat the accuracy of the addons like X-Europe which are based on "real" buildings footprints. Sure we don't get the correct facades, but at least the general shape of the buildings is more or less correct. It is the greatest scenery addition for XPlane, in my opinion. The combination with ortho scenery makes it a very enjoyable flying environment.

You did the scenery by yourself ? Including the modeling of the correct hangar shape and all ? This is nice. I took a look at scenery creation techniques a while ago, but never found the courage to go further 😕
