But after reading some responses here I might just start paying for someone's meal in a restaurant.  Anonymous charity is the best kind.

How and why would you choose someone in a restaurant? They are not likely to be homeless or trying to make ends meet. Also, I wonder why some stranger chose brucets for an act of kindness?

I forgot to mention that the waitress also said that he does that on a regular basis!

Maybe he chooses people who are eating alone.

Last November 2021 while investigating Hot Springs National Park as a potential new place to live, a friend and I were eating supper at the local Cracker Barrel. <snipped for brevity>

Several years ago I was behind a young mother who tearfully set aside some of her items apologizing to the folks in line for the delay. <snipped for brevity>

I can only assume that the fact that my friend and I were obviously "two old soldiers"(Zwei alten soldaten) was the proximate cause for that anonymous couple who paid for our supper.

In the case of the young mother, it was the fact she was setting back "adult food" and prioritizing "children's and infant's food" that caught my attention.

I'd just look around and make a random choice.  And why not?  It would make someone feel good and they just might do it for someone else.  I know I would feel good if someone did that for me.  And when the lady ahead of Betty paid for her basket load it made her feel good.  Maybe making warm spot in someone's day is worth the cost.  It is for me.  There's too much selfishness and 'what's in it for me' in the world today.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

I tend to think that people pay for others because it makes themselves feel good.  Its quite common here apparently.  People pay for others food in fast food drive lanes or at sit down restaurants.  I hope people help those who cant get everything they need with EBT cards (foodstamps).  In Dallas you weren't allowed to buy toilet paper or soap.  I saw a mother told she couldnt buy baby formula.  I found it embarrasing to be on foodtsamps myself.  I think thats what they wanted me to fel.
