Installed RTX 4080 - no sound now

Featured Replies

Anyone have any clues why my onboard audio isn't working after installing my RTX 4080?

Power is on, my three plugs (green, black, orange) are in the correct jacks....  speakers are turned on.

No sound at all.

Ok and I fixed it whew.

For some reason when I plugged back in my monitor it enabled sound directly from that...

Swapped into speakers (sound settings) and we're golden...now to fire up MSFS

I have 3 sound devices in my sim rig and this happens after GPU driver updates sometimes. Now another item on my after-updates checklist...sigh.

Glad you got it sorted out.

Would you believe that I had the exact same issue and reason for the issue when I installed by 4080 last night lol.  Couldn't figure out how I messed up the onboard sound until I realized by sound had switched to my TV (which I keep turned down of course).

This one is a 4080... spent 1403 USD after taxes.  (It's fairly close to the msrp but mine is not a FE so I think the price wasn't too blown out of proportion or anything).  Steep but the performance upgrade was also steep and amazing.  I have a decent writeup over at the MSFS VR forums but it sort of got buried.  I had some comparison screenshots but with the little time I have to actually enjoy my purchase I've mostly been flying either in 2D or VR.

The cool thing of this card series is Frame Generation.  It essentially uses AI to basically double your fps.  The FPS counter in msfs will show 40 or so but in 2D (fg does not yet work in vr) I get about 75-80 fps in reality (using nvidia overlay).  Now this is outside of the heaviest of scenery and addons.  The ultimate kill-my-rig scenario so far has been FlyTampa Boston, FSLTL ai traffic, the "scattered" weather theme, the FSW C414 with dual TDS GTN 750Xi's / and the new beta Longitude with G5000.  I depart runway 27 towards the city with Ultra settings (1440p / LOD 200).  I do this in the cockpit and from external view.  I also turned around and flew back over the airport.  In fact I did this test with my 1080 Ti about 3 days before the 4080 arrived.  And then I did it with the 4080.  (FPS are averaged)

1080Ti C414 Cockpit: 17 fps

1080Ti C414 External: 23 fps

1080Ti Longitude Cockpit: 15 fps

1080Ti Longitude External: 24 fps

4080 C414 Cockpit: 33 fps

4080 C414 External: 45 fps

4080 Longitude Cockpit: 31 fps

4080 Longitude External: 45 fps

In this scenario I'm highly CPU limited.  My 12700K can't feed the 4080 enough.  Need MOAR power!  Just kidding I'm done spending money for this year and likely the next.

Outside of this rigorous scenario I'm easily getting triple digits if I unlock frames and use FG.  But I lock at 80 in NCP when flying rural areas.

Double the fps is about what I got in big cities so the upgrade was well worth it. (in these pics the shift+z stats counter matches the nvidia overlay so the fps number is the actual one with FG enabled)

(Couldn't get the nvidia overlay on at first)

It also fits well in my Corsair 5000x case but for now I've run the wires this way which is annoying.  I couldn't fit them behind that lip in the lower corner due to other cables.  I may look into the cablemod 90 degree cable when it's released to route them near my ATX cords and then behind the board.  Install did take a while because I opted to not remove the PSU (which resides at the bottom of my case now shown - had my daughter help with her tiny hands lol)

The card runs fairly cool.  Cooler than my 1080 Ti (about 65C under msfs load).  There is no detectable coil whine.  I used the anti sag bracket with mine as well.  Oh the card itself is the MSI Gaming Trio X.

Wow, that's a great performance boost in your heaviest load scenario. I'm contemplating a GPU upgrade myself but will wait and see what the 7900 XTX brings in a few days compared to the latest round of nVidia offerings. I'm not expecting too much, especially as I mainly fly in VR and nVidia GPUs seems to be more capable in that area, but at the very least it could push 4080 prices down if 7900 XTX performance is nipping at its heals. Thanks for posting of your experience!

Initial 7900XT seems to show identical fps to the 4080 in FPS games.  I'm assuming msfs would be similar.  I don't how to their version of frame gen works though.  I also don't know if these test were run with FG on or off.

The 7900xt seems to msrp about 300 bucks less than the 4080 - so even the 7900xtx may be a good buy!

I just wanted to stick with nvidia (even though I was temped by team red)

Here's a 7900xtx against a 4090 - couldn't find it against the 4080 though.

@ryanbatc

Question. I don’t know too much about frame generation. But can you run frame gen but with taa on?  Like you mentioned. Dlss is a deal killer to me because of the panel blur and trying to avoid this. Thanks

Yes.  Dlss does look pretty bad.

For now I've decided to lock at 143 fps in NCP.

It's really nice that Nvidia decoupled frame generation from DLSS.   It will be a glorious day when FG tech is available in VR.  I know the struggle between the MSFS pristine razor sharp full ultra 2d 'pancake' mode and the completely less than perfect G2 VR visuals in a world you are sitting in and flying through.  Tossing the FG 2d frame boost into that power struggle must be crazy making.  Oh, the joy of first world problems.

I've actually settled back with DLSS in VR.  I gain about 30% fps.  It's acceptable in analog or mixed glass/analog panels but dlss is pretty ugly in the G1000/G3000 aircraft.

I'm still using TAA in 2D however.

I'm currently back on DLSS quality again in VR. The grunt of the 4080 allows me to run it at 180% OXR and still get 20% better FPS vs 100% OXR and TAA. The DLSS blurriness is pretty much negated at this high an OXR level and the overall AA looks better and sharper than TAA now, so I'll keep giving DLSS a go for now.

In VR I found that (IMO by far) the sharpest and clearest instrument panels, whether glass or steam, can be had by using an antialias setting of (drum roll please) None and a render scale of 100, with no external OpenXR settings active.  Of course these setting have thier own problems elsewhere.

After much wasted time I've settled on DLSS Balanced.  No way it's perfect, but with my 3080 ti driven G2 it yields the best overall consistent compromise between settings, image quality and performance.
