13900K/4090 having hard time with large airports (pauses)

Featured Replies

This month I upgraded from a 10900K @ 5.2, 4090FE and 32gb DDR4 4000 running Windows 10 Pro  to my current build running Windows 11 Pro, see specs below.

The problem I have is when I’m a few miles out from large airports, I am getting pauses like something is loading for a few seconds. I can be at 100+ FPS on a 3-mile final and hit a 2 sec pause, FPS will drop to like 50 and then it resumes like nothing happened. The airports  range from KMDW by DD, KATL by Asobo or KDFW by Asobo just to name a few.

When I ran my 10900K/4090 combo I had smooth approaches into these airports. My FPS ranged from 75-100+ with frame generation on and DX12/TAA. I was even able to fly into DD Midway with Chicago Cityscape with no pauses at all with many of the settings on Ultra or High and OLOD and TLOD at 200.

The new build is configured correctly running at 5.5/4.3Ghz, The memory is set to XMP 2. I also tried XMP 1 with same results. Everything on the PC is set to maximum performance as it should be. I can take off from Midway and do an entire flight to Atlanta in the Fenix or the PMDG and my FPS pretty much stay between 105 - 120. On the 13900K I am matching the same settings I used on my 10900K except I’m only using 150 for both LOD and I turned down airport traffic and people.

I ran Cinebench 23 and my setup is getting 39985 so I know its optimized. CapFrameX shows I have my monitor and video card configured correctly. I’m feeling a little frustrated that I am having these issues with a system that is clearly more powerful then my previous build.  The 13900K is showing its power because I can feel it as I fly and pan around, everything is silky smooth where would have a slight lag cycling views, not panning with the 10900K. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you cleared your shader cache?

Also via 'Clean Disk' the DirectX Shaders. It helped me. You should try it. Make sure Pre Caching in the MSFS Graphic settings is set to 'Ultra'.

Hope it helps.

Most of what is said on the Internet may be the same thing they shovel on the regular basis at the local barn.

Thanks for the suggestion but yes to both. I'm not getting stutters but pauses on approach. Almost like something is loading.  I haven't gone crazy with my settings and I matched my old build. I'll post my seetings in a few. I'm also not using photogamerty or rolling cache.

Have you been able to determine if in fact something is loading during those times?  As in via Task Manager or an app like Process Explorer or FileMon?

We just had a big thread here with a guy having pauses.  Turned out to be his Steam app, which he had to re-install.

It feels like somthing is loading in the sim, not on the PC. I had task manager montioring for any stray applications. It always seesm to happen around 3 to 5 miles on approach. Just landed in the pmdg 737 in Atlanta, 105 FPS on approach and for a brief second FPS dropped to 42 and then went back up. Taxied to parking holding 105.

Is your MSFS setting "Off Screen Terrain Caching" set to ultra?

Also, when it does this pause, do you notice any spike in Task Manager cpu activity?

Yes, it's set to Ultra. I have MSI Afterburner running to monitor the CPU, Temps, etc. I didn't see a spike but then I was watching the FPS for sunnden drops. I will check the spike this next flight. Here is a link to my settings. And if anyone ask, I am not using GSX.

Next time try it with an empty community folder, too.   Just to rule out some add-on.

Just a followup on what I have been up too. I did clean out my community folder and I still saw some pausing but not as much as before. I also cleaned out my shader cache and my directx cache. It helped a little bit more. I did flights too KMDW, KDTW and KATL. I did notice a slight pause into Atlanta but it was so fast it didn't interfer with the approach.

Then a user sent me a link to a video about a program called Intelligent Standby List Cleaner (ISLC). This is the same guy who makes DDU. I decided to give the program a try and I only did the ISLC  part of the video I am amazed that my stutters are now gone. I am able to added back all my paid products, FSLTL, etc, etc back to my community. I did three more flights to the above airports and everything is silky smooth so far. Even when I load up MSFS2020 it feels smoother when loading. I'm going to test a few more airports but between this app and tuning my refresh rate to my 120hz display, I am VERY happy in how the sim is working. Thanks all for the help and suggestions.

I'm bring this topic up again because I'm starting to see this issue again. I'm seeing the 2-3 sec pause on approach at Flightbeam KDEN, Asobo KATL and inibuilds KJFK. It hits as I'm around 1000 ft and 5 miles from the airport. Something is loading at the airport and I can't figure out what it is. Any additional suggestion would be helpful. My settings are not too crazy.

Could just be the sim itself.  I run with a lot of addons and have periodic stutters.  Either a combination of my addons with the sim which could be coded a little better or what - I'm not sure.  Usually I get stutters when using FSLTL ai traffic.

But the worst offender is iniBuilds JFK - that scenery is a resource hog.  It looks gorgeous but it's really rough on my system an I definitely get a large stutter when they thing loads in.

I have had the same thing happen, although it doesn't happen all the time and it's not 2-3 sec long.

I'm thinking the sim is loading ground vehicles in or something like that.  I don't use/have GSX.  Possibly you could experiment with OLOD (Object Level of Detail) setting but I haven't done that -- it hasn't happened often enough to make me do that, heh.

The good thing is iniBuilds is working on an update to help with performances issues.

The pause is because your computer has to load an incredible amount of high detaild textures from the add-on airport you visit, if the makers of the airports had used normal textures instead of 4-8k we wouldn't have had this problem, I wish the developers of add-on airports could make it an option to use their airports with normal texture sizes.
