For P3D I have little doubt that the 13900K is a better choice. Upgrade to 14900K will also be possible down the road.

I thought the current chipset was ending with gen 13.  But how much faster can the 14900K be?

No, the next gen will be another Raptor Lake refresh using the same LGA1700 socket. Even older Z690 boards should support them: Gigabyte Adds Support for Intel 14th Gen CPUs: Z690 Boards to Work with Raptor Lake-S Refresh | Hardware Times

With that being said, I don't think it will be a big jump though, perhaps 10% IPC improvement (it was around 12% on the jump from 12900K to 13900K).

With the release of 64-bit Concorde by FSL and seeing recommended specs I've now started the process of buying a new PC. After much thought over several months and flipping between Intel and AMD I've decided to stick with what I'm familiar with and I'm currently negotiating a deal with Chillblast for the following:-

  • Fractal Design Meshify 2 Compact - Black
  • Intel Core i9 13900K
  • MSI Gaming GeForce RTX 4090 24GB
  • ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Hero
  • G.Skill RipJaws S5 Series (Intel XMP) 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin SDRAM DDR5 6000 CL30-40-40-96 1.35V
  • Crucial T700 M.2-2280 4TB
  • Corsair RMe Series 1000W
  • ASUS ROG Strix LC II 240 ARGB Black
  • be quiet! Silent Wings 4
  • Windows 11 Pro OEM
  • Thermal Grizzly Thermal Paste

A build worthy of the Speed Birds!

Why not a 360? Seems like an odd 'compromise'. ..Just curious.

When I spoke to Chillblast I did say I’m open to alternatives to assist cooling.  Ishtar physical space be an issue? The 4090 is large.

Yes, the 4090 is large.. I have one also. Every build is different and it's the case that governs the layout, but in my situation, the 240 wouldn't have fit anywhere that I couldn't also fit a 360. I have a Arctic Liquid II 360 and it's cheap and does a fantastic job at keeping the 13900k cool and runs so quiet!

@odourboy, I’ll mention this to them tomorrow. Order not yet placed. I’m haggling. 😁

Somewhat frustratingly my next computer has been held up because of the unavailability of one component. The CPU liquid cooler.

Spoke to Chillblast this morning and they’ve swapped the ASUS ROG Strix LC II 120 120mm AiO Liquid CPU Cooler for a Fractal Design Celsius+ S24 Prisma 240mm All-in-One Liquid CPU Cooler.

Larger probably means cooler temps. Hopefully the build will start soon.

Wow, I missed that you only selected a 120mm. Trust me, them not having one was a good thing. The 240mm will provide better cooling. I built one for a customer that only had room for a 120mm as they had a small case and the whole cooler got warm. Glad to hear they are back on track with the build.

@TurboKen, at nearly 10” in length it should do the business. It’s a midsize case. Not enough room for a full tower.

An email today reports they’ve started stress testing. Should have it within a week.

Then the small task of decommissioning the existing machine of P3D and associated software and installing it on the new one.

New machine arriving mid-afternoon. I've now decommissioned my 8 year-old Win 7 computer used for photo editing and running P3D supporting software. It will be recycled.

P3D now being uninstalled on existing Chillblast. Sadly SimStarterNG settings cannot be exported and imported so all that fun will need doing again.

A very large box was delivered at the start of the 1 hour delivery window. Unpacking and getting it up the stairs had to be done carefully. I’m so pleased I found a USB2 expansion bracket for my GoFlight modules. Gave the link to Chillblast and they ordered and fitted it. With GoFlight now out of business having these accessories is invaluable to save any issues with USB3 ports.

It powered up just fine and then going through the W11 setup with Microsoft wanting to know everything about how I use the PC. No thanks. Not convinced 11 is any better than 10.

PC is quite noisy even when doing general Windows work. Probably a setting needs changing. Installed P3Dv5.3 but no point doing any tests with default aircraft and scenery.

They’ve enabled HT so I have a silly number of VPs. I’ll look at the BIOS in slow time.

It has a glass side so lots of glowing lights! 😁 So far, so good. 👍

Put it by the window and you could charge people to "see the lights". Then they wouldn't have to go to Oxford Street!
