October 1, 20232 yr Author Moderator @Mace, it is quite noisy even when nothing is running. That may be connected to a major problem that started yesterday. After a random time running okay the screen goes blank and the case fans go to maximum. The signal to the monitor is lost. It happened on one of several occasions with only Event Viewer open and no action from me as I was typing a report to the company handling the warranty on my laptop. Very frustrating and hopefully an engineer will visit tomorrow to resolve the problem. All quality components built by a quality company. It was fine all day Friday so it’s weird it started happening yesterday. Thank goodness for a five year warranty with the first two on-site support. Ray (Cheshire, England). Couple of things spring to mind: - the 4090 may be overheating, maybe monitor the temps? - power supply to the 4090 may have a problem. Look for a red light on the top of the card where the cable is inserted, if it turns red there is a problem. Hopefully the engineer will come tomorrow. I did have the default Task Manager / Performance process running monitoring the GPU and temps weren’t a problem. The system was effectively at idle. It’s a Gold 1000W power supply so should be fine. I’m leaving things alone today but will check for a red light tomorrow. Ray (Cheshire, England). October 1, 20232 yr Author Moderator Change of plan. I’ve decided to boot up the PC but leave it in the W11 opening screen showing the time. If it crashes it suggests it’s nothing to do with operating it and probably a hardware issue. I’ll check its status every 20 mins or so. The case has a glass side. The 4090 divides the upper and lower sections. No sign of a red light where the cables are but in the lower section beneath the 4090 there is a flashing orange light. That seems odd. October 1, 20232 yr Author Moderator 13 minutes ago, Reader said: Perhaps this is a motherboard LED telling you what the problem is? Probably but it would need me to open the case and then refer to the mobo manual. For a PC that’s less than 2 days old and with an onsite warranty I’ll leave that to the expert. After 45 mins on the W11 screen without a problem I logged in and checked GPU temp. Just 47°C. I launched P3D and after it loaded I selected the Navigation menu to switch to another airport. Almost immediately the screen went blank and fan noise increased significantly. I held down the power button and turned it off. What is interesting is fan noise hardly changed from system idle to P3D running. I have plenty of cooling in the case but also had it on my previous Chillblast and the fan noise on idle was barely audible. It’s very audible on this. At least the problem is easily reproducible when support arrives. Ray (Cheshire, England). October 2, 20232 yr Author Moderator I spoke to Tech support at Chillblast this morning. They suggested a driver update so I did that then launched P3D with him still on the line. After a few changes of aircraft and airports the signal to the monitor was lost and fan noise increased. We both agreed it seems to be a hardware GPU problem, not a software one. He suggested another MSI card GeForce RTX™ 4090 GAMING X TRIO 24G. I accepted that. Normally they require my card back before they send out a replacement but they will use the part-swap process where the DPD driver takes my card and gives me the replacement. I’ve packaged it up and now wait to hear back from Chillblast. So at this stage this looks like the quickest way of getting a replacement. Apparently the warranty company bring everything that may need replacing and that takes time to do. So I could be waiting over a week for that to happen. Hopefully the swap will be okay and I can be up and running by the end of the week. Ray (Cheshire, England). Hello Ray, a friend of mine went through the exact same experience, also with an MSI 4090 and also having spent a king's ransom on his new PC, but with Scan. I forget which brand his replacement card was, I think it was EGVA, they didn't have any more MSI cards in stock, perhaps luckily. This course of action was taken, including handing the broken card to the DPD driver and since then, he has had no more hardware problems. Edited October 2, 20232 yr by Reader
October 2, 20232 yr Author Moderator @Reader, in 31 years of owning PCs this is the first time I’ve had problems with a graphics card. Maybe they’re just getting too big and complicated. If I’d had the chance of an EVGA I would have gone for it immediately. I did ask if they had the Nvidia FE version but sadly they didn’t. Fingers crossed the replacement is okay. October 2, 20232 yr Ray, Make sure that that the PCIE slot looks okay, ie. not loose, no hairline cracks in the motherboard. These enormous cards place a lot of strain on the slots, all depending how they are secured. Can’t remember which case you got, but is there any type of support for the end of the card that is closest to the front of the case?
