Hi everybody,

now I feel is the time to look for a new computer. Over the last years I have followed many interesting discussions on the forums and seen very good and experienced advise, that´s why I look for such as well.

My current base for a configuration would be

Intel Core i9-13900K
be quiet silent loop II 360 mm water cooler
Fractal Design Define 7 Case
Gigabyte Z790 Aero G motherboard
Corsair Vengeance 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR5 6000
Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 16 GB
be quiet straight power 11 850 watt PSU
1TB Samsung 980 Pro PCI 4.0 M.2

I have two SSDs (1 / 2 TB) which I'm also going to move into this build as well from the computer I'm on right now, for mass storage some external HDD will be used as well.

I would be happy if someone let me know what you think - and I trust that some experts like Landon @sniper31 can give me some good ideas!

Thanks & have a good day

Gerold

Cheers, Gerold

Hey there Gerold @Stiller Water,  nice to hear from you my friend across the ocean 😉 The biggest thing that stands out to me that I would recommend to change is the case. Fractal make great cases (three PC's in my home I have built use Fractal cases). However, that particular case is not ventilated enough, in my opinion. Maybe with a much weaker CPU and GPU you could get away with that, but even with an AIO cooler like proper case ventilation is still ultra important for today's hotter hardware. If you want to stay Fractal, then I would recommend the Meshify 2 case or, even better the Fractal Torrent II case. The Torrent is one of the best cases out there right now, and has been for over a year. Great airflow, lots if internal room and a great setup for installing everything.

Everything else looks pretty good in your list. 🙂

I second the Fractal Torrent suggestion, really good case.

Is this machine going to be used solely for flight sim?

I've got a Fractal Torrent case and it's fantastic for air cooling but not the best case for an AIO. If you're doing a lot of simming I would be looking at the 7800x3D instead of the 13900K, not that you wouldn't be fine with the 13900K/4080.

Thanks for your input, Rhett. Currently flight simming would be the main intention - I am not into ego shooters or that teenie stuff.

The CPU/GPU question is a moving target, as always.

What would be your suggestion for a case, and why?

I would go amd in that case, 7800x3d or 7950x3d if you have the budget.

Since you said mostly simming then in my opinion with a 13900K you'd be paying for cores which you will not use.

If going Intel I think a 13700K or KF or 13600K or KF would do just as well at a cheaper price.

If going AMD...7800X3D or 7950X3D if going MSFS.  If P3D then...*maaybe* 7800X3D or 7950X3D but possibly a 7700X or 7950X would do just as well or better in P3D.   For MSFS however, I'd definitely absolutely 100% go 7800X3D or 7950X3D over Intel as others have pointed out.

I have gone with the 7800X3D for my personal sim build.   I chose this OVER the 7950X3D and it wasn't about budget.  I have no budget when it comes to flight sim.  So research your choice very thoroughly if going AMD.

I am really only current on the Torrent case because I own it but I assume you'd do fine with the Meshify or any case that is big enough to fit your 4080 and will take an AIO on the top of the case.

The Torrent will take a front-mount AIO but it defeats much of the purpose of the case because the front airflow comes from two big 180mm fans and there are no 360x180mm AIO's that I am aware of. If you change the mounting to a narrow AIO like the 360x120mm then much of your front cooling is reduced because you've lost 360x60mm of fans. The volume isn't exact of course but I think a lot of the efficiency of this case is from the airflow that goes directly over the MB and I think that is impacted if you get rid of the 180mm fans. The Torrent won't take a top-mount AIO because the Power Supply is on the top of the case.

Also, if you front-mount an AIO my understanding is that you want the inlet/outlet on the bottom, and your AIO cabling may not reach over and around your 4080 to allow that. To me, a top-mount AIO is the obvious way to go. In my Torrent I'm going to use a 360x180mm radiator and open-loop cooling system but it's ridiculously more expensive than a good AIO.

Hope that is of some assistance.

All my sim machine will do is run MSFS.   I also highly desire the single-CCD architecture of the 7800X3D for a sim rig.   If I did other non-MSFS tasks often with that machine, and didn't mind configging it or depending on Game Bar, Win updates or Process Lasso, I would go 7950X3D though.  I may still buy a 7950X3D to play around with.  I have enough parts laying around here to do it probably, except motherboard.
