90 fps in VR - what? I must be crazy

Featured Replies

just finished my new Ryzen 7800X3D pc build and couldn't believe my eyes: 90 fps with HP Reverb G2 over Orcas Island KORS in Carenado Seneca, no FStraffic tools, high-medium to low graphics settings obviously set as default after a fresh re-install of MSFS, but totally satisfying experience. have to immediately increase VR graphics settings substantially - 90 fps?  - this can't go on:

my hardware:

AMD 7800X3D, no overclocking, what for 😀

Gigabyte Aorus X670 Elite AX

64 GB DDR5 - G.Skill EXPO 6000

EXPO timings in BIOS

RTX 4090

HP Reverb G2

total power consumption: pc incl. RTX 4090 + 7800X3D: 360 watts. what about you, 13900K?

no addons in community, just several Carenados. wife wants us to go on a vacation, but I think I'll have to stay home and enjoy this totally unexpected incredibly smooth experience next 24 hours non-stop. I don't even get 90 fps in 2D since my TV monitor does only 60 Hz. And this all without FrameGeneration since it doesn't exist in VR😀

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

1 hour later: EXPO RAM timing turned out to be unstable to my surprise. turned that off in the BIOS, increased the graphics settings and am getting now still 65-82 fps in VR, this is unbelievable. in VR you don't see turbulence, you feel turbulence. you don't look at a cockpit picture, instead you live right in the 3D world. finally this feels like flying. If you can afford $ 1.200  for the 7800X3D upgrade (incl. mobo + 64 GB DDR5 ram) go get it, it doesn't get any better, it feels like FrameGeneration has come to VR. I am getting twice the fps in VR that I had before with my i9-9900K at the same 4.8 GHz clock speed. how is this possible. Noctua air cooler using only a single fan, total board power draw in VR now 360 - 480 watt all inclusive (CPU, GPU, motherboard). CPU gets only hand warm, never hot, but PCH, covered by large metal shield on the mobo, is very hot. I feel I am getting back every single cent I paid, I have never in all those years of simming been so overwhelmed. not a single stutter. a general aviation's sim pilot dream come true. that's how MSFS was meant to be flown.

AMD 7800X3D + RTX 4090 + MSFS: wunderbar.

I am at a loss for words.

Awesome stuff!  Did you build the AMD machine or did you purchase from an  OEM ?  Just curious.

I'm contemplating my next mobo / CPU upgrade.  Never ventured into "AMD" land, but maybe now its time.

Bummer about the EXPO RAM timing not working.  Hope you are not going to let that go considering it was something that you specially paid to get and both the RAM and mobo are made for it.   My gut tells me it's a voltage setting or maybe the sticks aren't in the proper slots (been there, done that).  Definitely got my eye on the Ryzen 7000 series for my next build, but that won't be soon.  Amazing IPC performance to say the least, plus no need for a monster-sized AIO CPU cooler.   BTW, don't forget that happy wife => happy life (regardless of VR performance).

it's working now, fortunately I had ordered and now tried several different DDR5 kits (and had activated overclocking all at the same time, that could have been the problem). initially then started again with the more conservative JEDEC memory timings, but now back to DDR5 EXPO timings, with no extra CPU overclocking. using G.Skill dual DDR5 memory kit for 64 GB total, it has been running now 24 hours with no problems ever since. The other DDR5 kit was Kingston Fury, which is  also AMD EXPO rated, but was not listed on the Gigabyte QVL list. I thought every AMD EXPO rated kit would work, but obviously not. I have increased most graphics sliders in MSFS for VR now to HIGH or MAXIMUM and getting ca. 65-75 fps on the HP Reverb G2 consistently (flying GA airplanes only so far). pc total power draw went up to 470 watts max.  7800X3D CPU temps below 70 celsius during flight, around 45 celsius when idle. "just add water" cooler - not for me, I just added a single vent on only one side of the medium-size Noctua NH-U12S chromax black air cooler.

in the last 100 years, since my first APPLE II, I have since never purchased and don't intend to purchase a pre-built pc. all you need is time, youtubes, sweat and tears. I had used Intel exclusively for the last century, but the 7800X3D changed all that.

Same, this is my first AMD system....and man I am impressed. I only got 2 sticks of 16gb because i wasn't sure about RAM stability. I may swap them out for 2 sticks of 32...but, the sim is performing fantastically. In the Varjo, I've been keeping the settings on ultra and I'm word not allowed blown away. Only pulling 35-45 FPS with everything on ultra....but it's still sooooooo smooth. Once the Varjo base motion prediction matures a bit, it'll be perfect. For now, though, I've thoroughly been enjoying flying in 2D. Frame generation paired with this CPU is magical. Finally...after over 20 years of simming, it's finally happened! I'll literally just load in at a gate or parking spot, and look around, marveling at how smooth and clear everything is. I honestly can't see upgrading anything in this system for years. There's really no reason to. I mean, the next gen of stuff may have even cooler features, but for what? TLOD at 400?? LOL Sorry for getting OT, I'm just really excited with this setup.

think of all those who are only now jumping on the bandwagon a.k.a. MSFS, they have no idea what we had to go through the last 40 years when it all began in B/W and no sound, like the silent movies.

"can't see upgrading anything in this system for years."

in MSFS's current state that is true, but hopefully the clouds, traffic, textures, buildings, AI models, atmospheric lighting, all that could still be improved upon.

"We shall never give up", to always request more and more 😀

but for the time being, I agree. the lack of any stutters whatsoever @ 4K or 8K/VR has re-ignited my enthusiasm for this hobby once again. and if you think of it:  all this for under $ 3.000 (incl. 4090).

As a current 9900KF user I am also looking at this upgrade, the issue around memory choice is the one area I have to do more research on, may I ask exactly which memory kit you settled on, G-Skill appear to have two 6000 64GB kits one CL30 the other CL32.

"As a current 9900KF user"

I come from an i9-9900K, the difference to the 7800X3D is incredible and more than I had expected.

as you can see in tests on youtube ( linustech etc) it totally doesn't matter if CL30 or CL32. as long as you have DDR5-6000 and make sure they are on your motherboard's QVL. they are listed also on the G.Skill website as being compatible with my mobo.

I opted for the first time in my live for RGB version, flying with colorful fireworks on these ram-sticks makes flying such a big difference 😊

G.SKILL Trident Z5 NEO RGB Series (AMD Expo) 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-pin SDRAM DDR5 6000 CL32-38-38-96 1,40V Dual Channel Desktop Memory F5-6000J3238G32GX2-TZ5NR

Gigabyte X670 AORUS Elite AX Motherboard AMD X670 Socket AM5 ATX

the more expensive X670 "E" version motherboards add support for PCIe 5, but there are no GPUs that could benefit from that and even PCIe 4 is already overkill.

what is more important to me: Q-flash Plus to update the BIOS from USB even without CPU etc. inserted, but most mobos have that these days anyway.

if you need a new PSU: I would take one with full ATX 3.0 and PCIe 5 support, that comes with the new single PCIe5 cable for the RTX 4090. mine doesn't but I had it already for my RTX 3090, before all that ATX 3.0 - PCIe5 GPU 12VHPWR hassle started last fall. my next PSU will be:

BE QUIET: ATX 3.0 PURE POWER 12 M 1000W -
