Is a DX12 VRAM fix feasible in MSFS?

I upgraded to a 4090 for this reason. I got tired of maxing out VRAM.  I kept upgrading from 3080, 4070, 4080 until i just bit the bullet and purchased the 4090 and its been the best thing i've done.  Highest VRAM I see now is about 18gb wtih maxed settings at inibuilds airports and no stutters.

At some point I'm going to do likewise.
My 3080 Ti has 12 GB VRAM which can get swamped. That's even with dialling back the settings and having run the Ordenador app on all my AI traffic files to reduce the texture sizes.

What happens using dx11?

I tried loading up iniBuilds KJFK in DX11 to see and while my VRAM usage was less (I had around 3gb to spare I think) the lack of frame generation meant my frames were quite low (15-20) so I think on balance I need to stick with DX12 to take advantage of frame generation.

This topic caught my attention since recently I've dropped using DX12 since at times my 3080 ti was choking due to a lack of vram.  As a VR user FG is irrelevant to me even if I had a 40 series card.  I subjectly experience no detriment to using DX11 so switching back to it was painless.  But I feel for those where FG is as necessary as having good AA, thus using DX12 is not optional (nor seemingly is owning a $$$$ 4090).  It'll be crushing if MSFS 2024 only supports DX12 and also has this excessive vram use.  I'd like to think that there's a future solution to this issue that doesn't consist of either seriously lowering the display resolution and/or settings, or spending $$$$ on a new gcard.

DX12 is still beta though - this leads me to believe it's unoptimized for usage in msfs.

What I've found is that if you want all the addon scenery, aircraft, AI with heavy weather you need to turn down settings especially things like TLOD.  Sometimes I also turn clouds from ultra to high.  Ideally a person would balance the load between GPU and CPU.

Asobo did say 2024 will include much better performance.  Let's hope that also includes vram.usage.

Has ASOBO commented on the high memory usage issue in DX12? There is a risk that this will become a major problem if we will be forced to buy graphics cards that many people cannot afford in order to run the sim in high resolution.

My 12 GB VRAM run out at most third party airports in 3440x1440 Ultra, it's unplayable for me in DX12 but works just fine in DX11 with same settings, MSFS are the only game iv'e tried that have this huge VRAM usage in DX12, something is not right, but it is a beta option after all, I will upgrade to a 4090 if the problem persists with MSFS 2024, but apparently that game will have a brand new code so there is still hopes.

With a 4090, I managed to use 21 GB VRaM with all settings between High and Ultra and both LODS at 175 in VR with the aero, DLSS at quality. That was during flight and with max 50 FSLTL aircraft injected and the Fenix a320.

Just to give you an idea HOW much VRAM MSFS and addons "eat".

Since SU13 I frequently managed to get DEVICE HUNG DX12 issue and even this is not an exception sind su13. Before I had a rtx3090 and before su13 there weren't no such dx12 VRAM issues.

The high VRAM usage in DX12 in MSFS2020 is going to be the new VAS OOM people saw in FSX.

Again, using the Ordenador texture resizing app might be the only solution for devs creating add-ons with 4K and 8K textures. Heck, I've now seen someone create a replacement MD-80 cockpit using 16K textures. 🤦‍♂️

Yes.  They said in the last twitch that they don't intend to do any more work on DX12 in MSFS2020, so that is probably it until 2024 unfortunately.

Curious as to why you didn't consider a 3090 with the larger vram. I have a 3090 but admit I will be looking for a 4090 when finances allow.

Frame generation is enough of a game changer in MSFS I expect that would negate buying a 3090 at this point.

That is darn impressive and also just sad....  Let's hope 2024 is totally re-optimized.

That's a good point though it seems people were commenting more of running out of vram on their cards rather than raw performance and there is still a significant price difference for people who currently have a less than 40's series card

I checked my VRAM as follows'

Fenix and IniBuilds KJFK

3440x1440 res so not one of the "K's"

DX12 and RTX4090 24Gb

TLOD 250

It peaked at 12Gb VRAM use

I'll have to go flying and push it harder and see.

That seems really low.  JFK just slams my 4080 and cpu.

And I'm only at 1440p.

You have heavy clouds too?  AI traffic?

I wonder how many times it must be first made clear that you state on which resolution and settings before statements like this one makes any sense? It is a lot different if you use 1080p, 1440p or 4K, and of course also which settings you use. In my case for example, I was easily maxing out my 16GB VRAM on 1440p using resolution scale 130, everything ultra and 6x6 texture supersampling. By simply turning down resolution scale to 105 and texture supersampling to 2x2 I am now almost everywhere 1-2GB below max VRAM, even on EHAM by FT with 75% AIG traffic (all packages instalued).

I use higher settngs, and with one 1440p monitor do not run out of 12GB VRAM anywhere (4070). But then I'm flying steam gauge GA planes or WWii warbirds which don't hog resources like most of you guys.

Not to worry. 2024 soon and then pie in the sky! Wonderful performance for all !
