I find the TrackIR problematic in that I often have to start it 4 or 5 times before it stays on.  A few others have reported the same issue.

You can try reinstalling the latest sofyware from its website, though it made no difference for me.

The odd thing is that when it starts and sticks it works fine.

I found the best thing was to run it at windows startup, then it always seems to stick.

It's a very odd bug and I'm surprised that Naturalpoint have not fixed it or come up with a solution that works.

I found a fix yesterday. Renamed TIRviews.dll in Program Files x86 to something else and this problem immediately went away, hours after aggravation. Found this solution on a forum from 11 years ago!!! I told NaturalPoint tech support about the fix, he just said "hopefully it is fixed soon". Yeah, sure 🙄

Just to add to my post, i started trackir set my profile, started msfs as soon as msfs  started  my profile changed to the default profile. (this all started after the last update)

Actually Peter, for me, on the odd occasion that Track IR does start, it's always to the default profile! BTW, did further testing yesterday, tried all suggestions from this thread and still no joy. Really miffed off.

suppose  you havnt got  any other  sim to test it out to see  if  only msfs  related

None which is installed. I did run DCS for about 18 months some while ago, and it worked a treat, no problems at all.

Hey fellas, as an update... I have had some degree of success. I have ticked the options in TrIR to run on 'system startup.' Once the PC is up and running I start the mouse emulation app and don't touch anything until I'm in the sim. For the past four flights it seems to be reasonably stable. I just hope it continues. Thanks to everyone on here who have been kind enough to offer their advice. Fingers crossed.

Latest report is that, once again, TrIR  just stopped worjking. I thought I had found a solution, and although there does seem to be some kind of stability, it still simply stopped working half way through a flight yesterday  There was an error message dipslayed on the TrIR UI, which said, lost connection with device(?) I really am frustrated and disappointed with this.

dont  know  if  its  your tr  is  about  to die  on you being the  hardware( cable,  the  tr  itself)   suppose you havnt  got  a friend  nearby with msfs  installed in which you could  try?  only  way  to test  it  if  it  isnt  your  msfs  causing  the issue, is  to reinstall dcs   and  see  if  the  tr  works  since  you  said  it  worked 18 months  ago but  not  recently?

Well, I do think that shows it is either a hardware problem with the TIR or the USB-port you are using. How old is your TIR? And it also shows this isn't an MSFS probem, I'd say.

Yeah, that sounds like what my 13+ year old TIR was doing before I retired it and bought a new one.

Sure, a good plan.

I think you may have hit the nail on the head!

After seeing the error message, I came to more or less the same conclusion about the possibility of it being the actual hardware. However, before blowing my hard earned cash on a new TrIR,  I will try it on another machine. In the meantime, I've changed the USB port from the front of the machine, to a powered hub running off a different port, which I know works fine. So far, it's working OK, basically for the past couple of hours! It's never done that before, so fingers crossed. Once again thanks to everyone on this thread who have offered so much advice, it's very much appreciated.
