Hi, Thank you for this great app. I’ve been using it for airliners with great result but recently I’ve tried it with low level GA VFR. I’ve experienced quite varied results and I am not sure if I am asking too much. I’ve tried both the 2020 only app and now use the 2020 and 2024 app. I run on 2020 and have GPU-z. The quick question regarding am I asking too much is that my altitude is mostly 1800-2500 ft and my hunch says that it’s too low to really see any large swings in reducing OLOD and increasing TLOD. If I am wrong and this is a perfectly valid use case for the app please let me know otherwise I’ll stick with it for airliners and just go all default with this low level GA.

Many Thanks

Switch to the VFR profile, which is optimised for the conditions you mention, for such flights.

I hope this doesn't qualify as a dumb question, but when I minimize or 'close' AutoFPS down to just the System Tray and not showing on the taskbar, is the app still actively working? I believe so, but I would like to just clarify please.

A second question in that when Active Sky FS updates the weather theme as per the Periodic Theme Reload Interval (which I have to set to every 7 minutes), I noticed that AutoFPS pops up a message window reporting that the cloud textures have changed and recommends not updating AutoFPS setting unless you restart the app. I don't have a screenshot of that message, but can obtain one next time I fly. Is that an issue with AutoFPS and Active Sky FS? Thanks!

I run AS, with AutoFPS and have never seen that message. I might have different settings though.

Yes, the app is still actively working when minimised or in the system tray.

It sounds like Activesky is changing your MSFS cloud quality setting, which AutoFPS red cards because you can't have two apps controlling the same setting. Either disable whatever Activesky setting is changing the cloud quality setting or, if unwilling or unable to do so, don't use AutoFPS when using Activesky the way you want to.

So this is the setting in AS FS which changes the cloud pattern every 7 minutes in MSFS. Otherwise the clouds stay the same throughout the flight even if the AS weather changes due to an update.

The only reason AutoFPS should be flagging a MSFS setting change like Cloud Quality is if this particular ActiveSky feature is changing that setting, but from what I have read of this feature it just changes cloud textures and not MSFS settings so this should not be happening. Can you please tell me the exact text of the message box AutoFPS is showing when you have this issue and whether it does it by itself or only when you access the MSFS settings menu during a flight?

Here is the window popping up in AutoFPS. I just click OK and AutoFPS continues on as normal.

Thanks for your time!

AutoFPS monitors your UserCfg.opt file stats during a flight and if anything changes it AutoFPS compares the settings it is tracking internally with what has changed in the config file, flags any differences then sets it back to what it expects it to be.

ie. Something is changing your MSFS config while you are in a flight and it is either another app like ActiveSky, which doesn't sound likely, or you change an MSFS setting manually (or a bug, but we will deal with that if it is not the other two). To that end, are you going to the MSFS settings window just beforehand and changing something or does it do it by itself while flying normally?

I might also get you to do the following, which will enable extended logging of any MSFS settings changes the app makes at any time, including Cloud Quality, so this should flush it out:

  • Without AutoFPS running, go to the %appdata%MSFS_AutoFPS folder and open MSFS_AutoFPS.config in notepad
  • Change the line <add key="TestMode" value="false" /> to <add key="TestMode" value="true" />
  • Save and close.
  • Now run AutoFPS with MSFS as you usually do, then after it exhibits the issue send me contents of the log file, located in %appdata%MSFS_AutoFPS\log, in a PM.

I'm not changing anything in the options once I'm in the flight and after starting AutoFPS.

Let me test your idea out tomorrow and I'll post back.

Thanks!

Sounds good. Are you using Auto Increase Clouds in Auto FPS expert settings by chance?

These are the MSFS 2020 AutoFPS settings I've been using for a while. Seem to work well with my aging computer and Lossless Scaling.

That's helpful thanks. If you can get me a detailed log when you can, I will into what you have already provided in the interim.

Also, can you try running AutoFPS temporarily without the decrease cloud quality enabled and let me know if you still see the messagebox.

Edi: I can reproduce the issue by simply saving the UserCfg.opt file without making any changes while the flight is running and it comes up with that same CloudQ VR red card, and I don't even have Activesky. As such, I should be now be able to find and fix the issue, which looks like a bug afterall.

No need to test any further at this stage until I find and eradicate said bug. Good find!

@WallysWorldsFound and fixed the CloudQ VR settings mismatch issue in 0.4.6.3-test5 or later, available here. Long story short, a 2020/2024 commonality update I did for this setting fell short of what was needed for 2020 and it didn't present itself until now because the UserCfg.opt file is rarely saved during a flight. I have restored original 2020 behaviour, which seems to have done the trick.

Please give it a go and let me know if your seven minute nuisance messages are a now thing of the past!

Thanks for the update. I'll download the test version and give it a fly today and will report back.
