February 29, 20242 yr I just checked to see whether MSFS would correctly show the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. I chose the city of Indianapolis, Indiana, at 2:06PM Central time (3:06PM Eastern Time). Indianapolis will be directly in the path of totality. The amazing news is that MSFS correctly shows the Moon beginning to obscure the sun at that time. The bad news is that despite the Moon's blocking out the sun's light, there was no darkening whatever of the earth's surface along the path of totality. In other words, it still looked like mid-day outside. February 29, 20242 yr It's never fully eclipsed in the Sim, one of the things I tried very early on. Even in totality areas it's only partial, not sure if anything has changed since I tried 3 years ago but I don't recall any update notes or talk of it. No matter how meticulously you adjust the time, the sun is never completely covered, even in geographic locations and times where it should be. I would prefer to see no eclipse at all than a 40% partial where there should be totality. I would be interested to know if this partial eclipse of the Sun can be seen anywhere else in the world in MSFS on that day. You can see this for yourself by picking a previous eclipse date & location. It's just that their astronomical simulations of the sky are so accurate that the partial eclipse within the sim occurred naturally. To me, that is extremely impressive. No, it is not absolutely perfect in every conceivable way. But neither is our current Gregorian calendar itself. That's why we're enjoying an extra day of February today. February 29, 20242 yr I don't think its that big a deal either. The mathematics involved in simulating the movement of celestial bodies is quite basic and requires minuscule computation power. I guess they are doing Earth Moon and Sun. Easy peasy! Even if they include the planets and their moons it would be easy. No doubt that everything beyond the solar system is shown as a sphere.
