This is getting insanely realistic!

99% it's VisualXP. I mean for 10 bucks, it's highly worth it. People can talk nonsense 24/7 about MSFS visuals, but that sim needs its VisualXP like app asap. Not a single monitor or VR display is the same, not to mention user preferences.

I agree, the shot will look very different on different monitors.  For instance the original shot, looks fabulous, except the colors are far too cool (too blue) on my monitor.  I actually touched it up to what I deem more realistic but there's no point in showing it because my monitor may look different than the next users.

We're still not at 12.1 yet, and we have screenshots looking like this

Does XP12 support HDR yet?

I was exclusive XP12 for the first eight months after release and really adored its lighting.  VisualXP added some great skies too.  Each month I would load up MSFS but not like the lighting.  However, I started using HDR and suddenly found XP12 to look dull in comparison (MSFS also looks dull without HDR now).

we have seen here previously "insanely realistic" screenshots of the next x-plane update only to get disappointed when at other times/places it looked insanely strange (minecraft or pitch black clouds in the afternoon). once it looks "insanely realistic" consistently and everywhere is it really insanely realistic for me. previous promises turned out to be insanely disappointing.

IIRC, X-Plane 11 had HDR support, via a checkbox.  X-Plane 12, strangely does not have this.

I found this discussion on it, though.

I can only assume you are running a 286 with 2mb Ram and VGA graphics. Cause mine looks nothing like what you say.

I only recently discovered what actual HDR is on my Mac display after seeing it come up on a Youtube video and I can't go back now .

By all means show us on the image I posted where these black minecraft clouds are?  Because no matter how much I scrutinise the image, all I see is perfection.

In my view, X-Plane shines with its optimal configuration (Ortho + Plugins and precise settings), presenting superior visuals compared to the competition.

Conversely, MSFS stands out for its reliability, albeit less frequently awe-inspiring, offering an overall more enjoyable experience.

It'll be interesting to observe if version 12.1 alters this landscape.

Only fly Xplane 12 and I dont know where the unenjoyable less reliable experience comes for, possibly usually just people who cant set it up properly.

This is great quality, considering the author is running with very little autogen and that XP 12.09's terrain shading applies uniform specularity on orthos (making them look "flat" at lower sun angles).
