Interesting! Been testing what TLOD controls (with the help of AutoFPS). So far: 

  • terrain draw distance 
  • mesh resolution 
  • photogrammetry

And like you mention, trees too. No wonder it puts such a massive load on the poor CPU. Having a different LOD for tree draw distance would be great.

I’d love to try such a tweak.

I think there is an opportunity here for some enterprising addon dev:

"LUMBERJACKS!"

  • Just configure the distance from runway threshold and width of clearing and our animated woodcutters will get to it.
  • Watch in real time while you taxi to the runway as they diligently hack away at the offending treeline or set to INSTANT for that overnight contractor fait accompli effect.

Curious as to your "tweak" to extend tree display distance. Still care to share?

Would also be super keen to have a look at this tree distance tweak. 
 

I really miss the old mod that used to work where you could extend the tree distance. It’s far to small in MSFS and you can clearly see the edge of the trees and then the horrible blurry textures beyond this tree line.

Compared to how P3D, FSX and even FS9 had various individual sliders/individual settings in the .cfg file, attributing nearly everything to TLOD is a massive regression.

Apologies everyone. I was mistaken in thinking I saw more distant trees based on the tweak to the tree species.xml file. Proper testing shows the tweak no longer works and was due to the fact that I was using a much higher TLOD with a GA flight.

Ahh this is a shame. Thanks for getting back, I so miss the mod that used to extend the trees that used to work.

Thanks for getting back on this. Yes, there was a "super tweak" discovered early on that extended tree draw distance to the horizon and had little impact on performance as I recall. I used it and loved it; then one day Asobo/MS decided nope you can't have that and they nuked it, never to work again. Have never understood why they did this, apparently they thought this would impact performance on the XBox consoles and eliminated it for that reason is my guess.

Would love to get this back someday, perhaps in a future mod?
