Low FPS in High-End PC

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Today I made a flight from Heathrow to Boston, USA. During my stay in London, I noticed that my fps did not exceed 30 and in some cases, 20. I have a 4060 8GB, Ryzen 5 5500 and 16GB RAM. Addons i have GSX Base ( no lvl2 ), Aerosoft Heathrow, Aerosoft A330, FlyTampa Boston, Flight1 Ultimate Traffic Live and Orbx FTX Global and Vector

In-game settings:

https://ibb.co/tKF2DRZ - DISPLAY

https://ibb.co/nRJdNzq - WORLD

https://ibb.co/GMVC562 - LIGHTING

https://ibb.co/YNvZKbw - WEATHER

Extra info:

The low fps thing only happens on land, which makes me think it may be ftx global or utlive (high density). Even so, I think there has to be a solution for it, since I think my computer is capable of handling the game without problems.

Greetings.

EDIT: I checked task manager, and i saw that the CPU Core 0 is at 100% and the rest is under 40%.

It's all about tweaking, when it comes to P3D. I am on i9 13900KF and RTX 4090, but still get low fps on ground and on approach. It is something normal for P3D, unfortunately, get used to it.

Well, if it's normal in the game, then yes, I'll have to get used to it.

I do not agree that this is normal for the sim (not a game) as part of its internal coding. I am not a techie by any stretch. But, I do know that by adjusting things such as scenery and/or cloud densities as well as other visual factors it is possible to regulate fps. I have an older system based on a GTX 1660ti with 6 gigs of tam, plus 16 rams on my mobo. I have fps set at 37, which is usually achievable. Even when I go into the low 20s, such as flying the A2A CESSNA 182, I rarely see a drop lower than that.

Just adjust settings and you should be fine. Worry less about fps and think more about enjoying flight simulation.

Well I would try reducing the density of AI traffic. You mentioned you have it on a high setting, so I would dial it back.

Is CPU core 0 always at 100%? If so, this probably explains why you lose frames because the CPU does not have enough headroom when it comes to loading a complex and busy airport like Heathrow. I would adjust your settings so CPU core 0 has some headroom, maybe 80-90%.

Also try reducing scenery complexity at Heathrow to see if that helps.(i.e turn off some of the "nice" features)

Those addons all add to the already relatively high resource consumption of P3D itself, especially the eye candy airports.  Even the stock Heathrow airport is taxing what with all the custom buildings and high AI traffic.

I'm not surprised that your frame rates drop a lot using Aerosoft Heathrow + Aerosoft A330 + Ultimate Traffic + FTX Vector.

You're actually doing pretty well to be getting frame rates in the 20s with all that stuff.

@SusGofres, v4 is far less efficient than v5. If you went to v5 you could dispense with Vector, a known fps eater and unnecessary in v5 with its improved ground scenery.

Core0 at 100% is proof you’re asking more than the system can deliver. v5 has refined the spread of work across virtual cores instead of core0 taking the load.

I use Process Lasso from Bitsum. It is not that cheap, but it does some job. It unlocks more CPU's to engage in P3D. I suggest, guys, with performance problem - buy this program. Set the P3D process to below normal CPU priority and you can disable hyperthreading. That will help with performance, or at least is helping me. I usually get above 20 fps with it on highly dense areas, like Sydney, where I have 3 different terrain sceneries.

I think the opening premise in the thread title that the OP is running a "high-end" PC should be challenged here at the outset...a Ryzen 5500 was on the lower end of the mid-level performance tier two years ago when it released, and a 4060 is definitely not high-end these days, either.  Those PC specs are sufficient to get the job done, but are going to present a challenge if settings aren't tailored to mitigate the limitations of the middling hardware.

That said, I think the performance the OP is reporting is actually quite reasonable, especially considering the multiple heavy-hitting add-ons in use.  Both Heathrow and Boston are known performance killers in P3D.  Traffic is also a well-known ball and anchor in the performance dept--depending on the traffic level set.  Anything over ~30% at EGLL or KBOS is gonna clobber even a strong system.

Not on mine with Frameless Generation running. I can sustain 60fps at those airports plus LAX, CDG and Hong Kong. Over 220 Ai when positioned at LHR.

I’ve not seen you mention it. It’s transformational and other than a few artefacts absolutely brilliant. Get it at Steam. Under 6GBP. Your system is faster than mine so you’ll benefit just as much.

And i also find having the scenery draw distance set too high in P3d is a performance killer and have mine set too normal.Makes my sim and frames rate playable like the fellas said in the above posts fine tune your system too suit your specs.Even with my specs AMD 7950 3D cpu at 5.7 gig ,GPU 4080 and 32 gigs of ram can be put too its knees if settings are too high just saying.

Also, be sure that  Dynamic Autogen 3D Vegetation is left unchecked.

As for the scenery Drawn Distance, normal as noted above is fine. Chances are even if you were to set a higher distance you would not be able to see anything different. Think in terms of real life. How far ahead could you actually see at any given altitude?
