Can I use VR with these specs?

Featured Replies

So, I would like to get a VR headset  (Quest 2 or 3), but I am not sure if it would be worth it with these specs on medium or low settings. I don't know if it would help if I kept my flying away from big cities. I mainly fly the F-35 or PMDG 737 or 777.

My specs are:

Ryzen 5 5500 CPU

Radeon RX 6600 GPU

16GB RAM

 2TB SSD

Thanks

That video card is pretty weak for a good experience IMO

Is the PC one you built or bought somewhere?  The CPU is kinda mid range like something you'd get at a store.  But I think with a better GPU you'd be okay for an average VR experience.

No not with that specs... the CPU is OK? but don't crank up the graphic details.

You will need a good GPU, otherwise, you are in for a disappointment because what you see thru the VR, will not be as clear as you thought and with the stuttering, can cause motion sickness.

As for clarity, you will not be getting as clear as looking at a monitor with VR, so set an expectation.

I have 13600K with 6750XTX 12GB with quest 3, the Q3 runs not bad with other stuff, but with FS2020 i want the experience to be better, so i am planning to upgrade to 4070ti with 16gb or 4080.

Hopes this helps!

I ordered each part individually and tried to put it together myself but I had to take it to a local repair shop because I must have not plugged something in correctly and it wasn't working at first. I built it based on a recommendation on here or Reddit when I wanted a new budget PC so I could finally play MSFS.

Thanks

Ahh.  I think it is a good budget PC but better suited at 2d flying.  VR is much more demanding especially on the video card because typically you're rendering 4k per eye with a nice headset.

Thanks hopefully at some point I can get a new GPU. I was just hoping I could get away with it if I flew in more rural areas without tons scenery and buildings. If I did upgrade my GPU, what's the minimum I would need? From what I understand Nvidia is better but could I get away with a Radeon 6800 or 6900?

Probably would want a 7800XT honestly

But I'd wait to see how the new sim is.  Asobo has said it will be more optimized than 2020.

Look at my specs.  That's about the lowest you want to go to get a decent VR experience.  You built a PC with 2D in mind, now you'll have to build one with VR in mind.  I actually believe your current setup as a whole needs a full upgrade because there's no guarantee FS2024 won't see us all needing to get new hardware.

FS2020

Alienware Aurora R11 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10700F - Windows 11 Home 32GB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super OC 16GB - Pimax Crystal Light VR

I have a 4070 (not ti not super), it works very well indeed in my Crystal Light headset which has far higher resolution than a Quest 3. And my 3070 ran my Reverb G2 headset and my Quest 2 just fine (when I turned the settings down like you plan to do).

Whatever you do, don't buy the Q2. It is not anywhere close to as good as a Q3. Night and day difference.

Be sure and turn on ASW (it will in effect double your frame rates in a Quest).

Going back to the old gpu I had (3070): here is another guy with a Quest 3 and 3070 in MSFS. Works just fine as you can see. He has a better cpu. It's hard to change cpu because you usually need a whole new motherboard. The GPU is just plug in and out. But there has to be enough room for it to fit, so look for the stats showing how wide the GPU is. In my smallish PC case, 2-1/2 slots wide will fit. I cannot fit a 3 slot wide gpu on my computer.

My 600 watt power supply is more than enough for my 5800X3D cpu and 4070 gpu. By the way, a 4070 gpu draws less power than a 3070, not more. And a 4070 super is the same watts as a 3070. A 4070 super ti pulls more watts than a 4070 super (not super ti), and I don't think my 600 power supply would be enough, but maybe it would.

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

A crystal  light (which is what I use now) will give better fps than the Quest 3. I used to get 25-30 with Quest 2, 35-40 Reverb G2, 45-58 with a Crystal light. Crystal LIght is more expensive.

My 45-58 with Crystal Light. The Pimax Play app has 3 resolution checkboxes low medium high. 45-58 is with it set at medium. This is less than the I think 2800 x 2800 normal (high) setting for resolution. There is also a slider to set resolution in between those 3 quick set checkboxes.

45-58 medium resolution in Pimax Play. But also with DLLS set at balanced and MSFS preset set at highend.

But suppose I turn Pimax Play from medium to low. And DLSS down from balanced to performance. and reduce MSFS render preset box from highend to performance. Now by lowering all 3 of those quick settings,  the Crystal Light is going to give results like I get on hardware poorer than mine.
