Processor upgrade 12900 to 14700 (rationality for P3D)

Featured Replies

I have had a video card change from RTX3060Ti to 3090 yesterday, and I have been proposed a decent price to upgrade from my Intel i-12900 to i-14700.

Is it reasonable and prudent taking into account this is done ONLY for P3D?

(P3D5.4.9.28482)

For only P3D v5? Not that much. Your 12900 is good enough.

You need a very good deal for making the change worthwhile. According to Passmark, it's just a 5% difference in single-core performance, and P3D can't benefit a lot from multiple cores.

Now, if the deal is for a 14700K or higher (and yours is a non-K version), that may be another story.

Main rig: self built, AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D (with SMT off and CO -50 mV), 2x16 GB DDR4-3200 RAM, Nvidia RTX 5060Ti 16GB, 256 GB M.2 SSD (OS+apps) + 2x1 TB SATA III SSD (sims) + 1 TB 7200 rpm HDD (storage), ID-Cooling SE-224-XTS air cooler, Viewsonic VX2458-MHD 1920x1080@120-144 Hz (G-sync compatible), Windows 11. Running P3D v5.4 (with v4.5 scenery objects as an additional library, just in case), FSX-SE, MSFS2020, MSFS2024 and even FS9! Lossless Scaling for all my sims. What a godsend...

Mobile rig: ASUS Zenbook UM425QA (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H APU @3.2 GHz and boost disabled, 1 TB M.2 SSD, 16 GB RAM, Windows 11 Pro). Running FS9 there .

VKB Gladiator NXT Premium Left + GNX THQ as primary controllers. Xbox Series X|S wireless controller as standby/mobile.

Totally not worth the CPU change. Get and use Lossless Scaling program instead. And overclock your current cpu if you can.

Hi vl1

I am not sure your CPU upgrade will provide a lot of significant dividends for P3D alone. The combo of i9-12900 with the RTX3090 should be a really great combination to run P3D I would have thought. Are you suffering from any major issues with the i9-12900?

Just a question of clarification, do you have the base i9-12900 or the "K" version? The difference between the two is about 5% in specs and in actual gaming in P3D I think its going be less.

For the i7-14700K vs i9-12900K there's approx a 10% difference in specs (speed, etc) so I am not sure you are going to see a big difference real-world when flying in P3D. If it was more like a 20% advantage it might be worth considering.

Obviously you will have a few more cores and threads with the i7-14700 CPU vs the i9-12900 (20/28 vs 16/24) but I think its a rate of diminishing returns based on the number of cores & threads the i9-12900 already has which should already be plenty for P3D to distribute the various main scheduler, render and frameworker threads over, plus some simmers here using P3D are running with hyper threading off and also have a good P3D experience which may or may not benefit you.

If the CPU upgrade was only going to cost you only a few $, then having the penultimate latest rev of the Intel CPU (the Core 200s are not receiving good feedback on gaming reviews currently) may be worth going for but I would not pay probably more than $50 more for this (my personal opininon).

Anyway its your money and your rig, so you have the final call on whether you think its worth doing or not.

Congrats on the move from the RTX 3060Ti to the 3090. That should give you plenty of horse power and is a good move for P3D!

If this is an upgrade to a 14700 and not a 14700K, then I'd expect very little bang for the buck.  The K-series SKUs offer some interesting capabilities, like being able to turn HT on or off per core.

That said, if this is a used or early-production 14th-gen CPU, I'd stay away like it had a case of silicon leprosy.  The 13th and 14th-gen CPUs have had well-known issues with overvolting due to bad microcode as well as a problem with a defective anticorrosion layer in the silicon, both of which can degrade or outright ruin the CPU over time.

Guys, thanx A LOT for all your answers!
And thank you for being sooo detailed, much appreciated!
I will inquire about 14700K, if it is not a budget killer I will maybe go for it.

Again, appreciate all the effort and so much text typing))

A word of warning here: make sure to check that the motherboard supports an unlocked CPU, also.  A K-series CPU won't do you any good if the motherboard doesn't support it's capabilities.  If you have a motherboard that has a B-series chipset, e.g. a B650, it won't support the advanced features of the unlocked K-series CPU.  Unfortunately, most computers built with a non-K CPU tend to use these cheaper chipsets.
