Please share your approach to Controller Settings

Featured Replies

I have been trying to find my way across the new GUI, with not much success 😕

Started b thinking that having - by default - settings organized under "Aircraft" / "Glider" / "Helicopter" ... might be a good option in FS 2024, but then I'm all messed around the "General" / "Airplanes" / "Specific" sub-classes 😞 ???

The "Specific" for instance - are they supposed to be populated only with default assigned specific controls for a given aircraft, like for instance a hot air balloon or are users "free" to define their specific controls for a given aircraft? Apparently I can't edit that section ?

I wouldn't like to call it a mess ... but that's how I feel about it the way it is and without a proper tutorial to guide me 😞

Any suggestions based on your experiences - please post them in this thread !

This article (link below) explains it pretty clearly. Honestly I wonder if some of these things are made more difficult because the devs are French and English is not their first language: sometimes the subtleties get lost in the language they choose for labels / instructions in the UI:

In theory at least, it looks sensible :

1. "General" settings to apply regardless of aircraft choice, subject to ...

2. "Aircraft" settings to apply depending on type of aircraft (aeroplane, helicopter, ballon etc), subject to ...

3. "Specific" settings to apply to the particular airframe you've chosen.

For example:

1. Camera/ view settings?

2. Ailerons / elevators / rudders?

3. Throttles / lights / signs?

Great article, thanks!

The only issue with new sim (or newly installed) is the fact that I have to spend a week and most likely somewhere ballpark 20 hours to set up everything as I like it. In 24 years of simulator experience, I have developed some certain habits, which I can't just change because MS says so - I do wonder also, why they completely changed the layout going from FSX to MSFS2020. I believe flaps were changed from F5-F8 to some letters etc.

In any case, I find the new system even better than MSFS2020, I hope that it stays saved. I'd seriously like to see an option to export the settings to an XML file or something like that, so I can import it, if cloud "says" they are gone.

Hello

Although I think the process is a bit less intuitive than 2020, the FAQ can help but my comment concerns the sensibility of controls settings of my Joystick (Hotas Warthog).

In the case of helicopter, I want no sensibility correction (0). While with a classic airplane, I want to reduce sensibility (-0.3).

The Hardware settings (H) are linked with the hardware itself and not with the profile presets config.

So, I can’t do that. I wonder if this is a bug or a choice. If a choice, i think this could be a limitation.

I think it’s a good system once you get used to it. Once I had all my basic bindings set, it took another few minutes to get separate helicopter profiles done and I was surprised how automatic the whole thing is in practice.

For example the sim automatically applies general helicopter specific profiles when you hop into a heli, and then, if present, specific profiles for that particular heli. And of course switches to airplane ones if you hop into a plane.

Simplest way to think about it is as a system with three layers:

First you have a general binding profile that will apply across the board - these will apply to all aircraft…

…these bindings can then be overridden by category profiles (ie Plane / Heli) that will apply to all aircraft of specific category…

…and then those bindings will be overridden by aircraft-specific profiles that will apply to that specific model.

You can have multiple profiles per each layer with an ability to set defaults.

I do have annoyances with control bindings - things like inability to preview axis inputs or automatically highlighting buttons when you press them. But the actual profile system I feel works well.

EDIT: Forgot to say, I like how you can now have much more flexibility with axis tweaks - you can set curves for each axis for the entire device or for individual bindings on that axis. And have different one per each layer.

So for example my rudder pedals generally have no curves applied. However all helicopters across the board have more dead zone and reduced sensitivity. And then on top of that specific helicopter models have additional sensitivity tweaks on top of that to dial the right feel.

And the beauty is, once you set that up it’s all automatic.

And what about sensibility ?

Go to the binding itself for the axis, then click on the little gear next to it. There’s an option to adjust the curve. That’s the specific adjustment just for that profile and just for that axis, if that makes sense.

On the right of every assignment is an options icon (the small gear) where you can adjust sensitivities.

Yes but the sensitivities concern the controler and all profiles according my tests. Maybe i'm wrong.

I always found the mandatory Validate nonsense in 2020 very annoying. The control settings in 2024 are sooooooo much easier to use! I guess it's something that has to 'click': once you get it, it's great. Luckily I had that click in minutes and all my controls were set up in 10 minutes or so. Imho it's all pretty self explanatory. Big improvement over 2020.

Like deleting an assignement: iirc in 2020 you had to click on it after which a popup opened. You had to click on Delete and after that on Validate. In 2024 you simply hover your mouse over the assignement and press Backspace. Couldn't be easier.

And although I myself don't use aircraft specific profiles (I only fly one plane): this has been a request of many simmers in the past. Now we have it and now people don't understand it.

I absolutely love the new GUI (and not just the controls but everything). In 2020 I still had to search for certain things and the GUI felt seperated (now sure how to say that in English). In 2024 it's all connected and 'one'. And a lot cooler too (like how you start a flight or get back to the main menu after flying.

Well, anyway... everyone has its own preferences, I suppose. 😉

Hehe it was only an example ... but in fact you will need one or more specific profiles if you have 2 levers but like to mix it up between using 2-engine planes and 4-engine planes 😉
