Anyone using AMD cards / any reason not to

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Going to upgrade in next few months. AMD cards look attractive - lots of VRAM and price obviously better.

I mainly use P3D but when I upgrade will be keen to use MSFS with Fenix, FBW etc. I run 4K monitor at 30 Hz vsync presently. Also may give xplane a go - basically I’ll go where the detailed jets are.

I don’t see a lot of posts here about AMD cards. Is there a reason for this and any reason not to get one?

Thanks for any advice you can offer!

Rudy

In my country a 5090 is retailing for around $5,000.

That's reason enough for me to buy AMD when I am in the market for a new GPU (currently on a 4080)

I have two AMD GPUs, 7900XT and 7900XTX.

I have 5 nVidia GPUs 3090, 4070Ti Super, 4090, Titan X, 3060Ti.

The best performance to cost ratio is my AMD 7900XT (got it new from BestBuy at $715) and it works fine with 850W PSU.

I’m waiting for AMD 9070XT release on March 20th.  AMD are claiming to have enough supply, so we shall see.  Eventually I might get a 5090 in August/September when stock levels stabilize and MSRP is a reality.  The leaked performance reports of the 9070XT show it about on par with 5080 including RT support … no confirmed pricing, just rumors of between $800-$1000.

EDIT: the 4090 is about 12% higher FPS than the AMD 7900XTX (same settings, CPU, MB) in MSFS2020 … haven’t tested 2024 yet.  FYI, I don’t use DLSS nor FSR … not a compromise I’m interested in using.

Hi Rudy,

I have used Radeons for many years (and Geforces), currently running a 7900XTX after upgrading from 6900XT. You don't need to worry. I have only pleasure using my Radeons.

I'm planning to write a guide here for installing and setting up Radeon cards, how to do what and tune the cards as there is differences to Geforce cards which few people realise.

You won't regret your purchase if going for Radeon.

Nvidia has a lot of mindshare for good reason due to effective marketing, something AMD is very poor at. Hopefully they will get their marketing up to scratch soon enough, something they desperately need.

Regards

Marius

Is FSR3 roughly equivalent to nvidia frame generation in MSFS?

In your country (which is also mine) I doubt very much anybody has managed to actually purchase a 5090.  I wasn't aware of a single supplier that had supply on day 1.

Given OCUK are estimating 3-16 weeks until they get supply, I reckon we could be in for a very long wait down here.

Roughly, yes, different approach to the problem, but end results are similar.  DLSS 3.5 is a tad better than FSR 3.1 but judge for yourself here (4K native so best to view in 4K and the larger the monitor the more likely you'll spot differences):

On a positive note, looks like AMD are bumping their GPU release schedule forward ... now saying end of February.  Smart move, kick nVidia while they are down and give users a viable performance alternative for less $$$.
