British archaeolgists have a ridiculous theory.

The rich Melonsby Hoard of iron age artifacts were found by a guy with a metal defector in Yorkshire 3 years ago or so. It's a wealthy hoard of precious items. But centuries ago the whole lot were all buried after being burnt or disfigured by hammer blows or cut up. Hiding a treasure hoard is not surprising, but deliberately ruining them before the burial has the archaeologists puzzled.

So they came up with the odd theory that a wealthy person or group destroyed them to advertise how wealthy they were. As in showing that such a treasure trove was a mere trifle to them.

Somehow I can't imagine a group of ancient elites sitting around their impressive round house fort hearth one evening, and one them suggests: "lets gather heaps of our treasures and destroy them publicly just to advertise how wealthy and important we are. That sounds like a silly Monty Python sketch!

I was born in Kent 6 miles away from a roman ruin a mosaic floor covered in roman tiles, a protected site you can find them all over the UK. Dating about 50AD.
