Bing maps abomination

There is no need for bickering about this. MrBitstFlyer is clearly very passionate about MSFS 2024, and there is nothing wrong with that. We have all been guilty (if that is the right word) of vociferously voicing our support for various simulators and products over the years. Quite why only a handful of people listened to me when I said that Flight Unlimited 2 and 3 were miles better than FS2000 and FS2002 is beyond my ability to understand, but I simply had to accept that most members of the flightsim community were a weird bunch with deeply flawed opinions :wink:

Yeah, I'm just a gumpy sleep deprived old git anyway LOL  Surprised anyone actually pays attention to me, people should know better by now 😂

And FS9 is STILL better than FSX... 😉

I generally enjoy looking at the scenery when I am flying in MSFS 2020.......and then I see something like this, and my OCD subroutine kicks in  A mix of generic and fabulously blurry terrain near Mount Skala (east of ENML Molde in Norway) that instantly shattered the immersion. I really hate seeing word not allowed like this, and a quick check of the Bing maps online reveals the source of the problem. A lonely cloud sitting right over that spot.

I am sure that there will be plenty of places like this in MSFS 2020 (and probably also MSFS 2024). That French naval dockyard southwest of LFRB Brest Bretagne springs to mind  I suppose that this is inevitable, but it is incredibly frustrating.

I like to imagine that its a military base and I am not allowed to view it. Then again, I have not seen this in 2024 yet.

I have France VFR scenery for North West France. The French naval SSBN base and the associated facility to the south at Crozon are represented in detail (but how accurately??.) as is the military airfield at Landivisau. I’ll be interested to see how they cover Valduc, just NW of Dijon when France Central is released.

French military installations are censored, as are nuclear power plants. Google censors them as well.

I would be curious to know if this issue also exists in MSFS 2024. I suspect that it will, because that cloud is in the Bing image online.

just for info, here is how it looks in v2024, different angle because using the same angle as you it looked a bit better.

As you said, the issue is caused by clouds on the bing map (military zones are also blurry but that's a different discussion). The cloud issues are also present in MSFS2024 just the same as 2020, here below take a look at Cali 2024 (Colombia) ... white textures caused by clouds on the big maps generates white/blurry textures on both sides of the valley, South America is plagued by those textures issues unfortunately (for mainland Europe and US, Bing cleaned most of the stuff fortunately i guess).

In your example, white textures generated by Bing clouds are less shocking and we may even think it's normal snow because it's in northern Norway, but when it happens in hot non snowy areas it's a bit more disturbing.

Now obviously here we are focusing on a very specific issue that affect only a fairly small portion of the big msfs map that happens to be the whole world, the msfs2020 ground texture has been an amazing/gigantic/extraordinary evolution coming from fsx/p3d, but well yeah when our eyes come across those areas (cloud -> blur+snow, military -> all blurry) it's very disturbing and we can only hope for improvements that will probably take a new generation of map to be fixed. It's for sure the kind of areas that will not make it to the microsoft/asobo marketing events 🙂

Better than the entire world being generic textures

It's never going to be perfect, it is impossible for it to be perfect.

This thread actually explains the blurry textures and what looked like clouds on the ground I was seeing in the middle of the Gobi while overflying China.  I figured they were Chinese military bases but this thread confirms it...

Maybe MS and the Bing team need some balloons to get a better look at these highly sensitive areas 😉

Giving me flashbacks of my "other" sim days. Downloading 100's of GB's of Ortho and spending hours color-correcting everything.....just to fly over one tile that would never look good.

Are many of you still using bing map enhancement in 2020?

Or does it cause any issues?

Thought ide try it agan, i have not used it in over a year due to the rectangular grid lines in on terrain which did not blend well.

Has much been improved?

Thanks

Mike
