April 28, 20251 yr I was wondering if anyone out there knew why all the jet airways are disappearing in Europe in the updated air route maps? Half of the UK and Half of France are now gone and all of Italy Any answers would be great thanks 13ifs40
April 28, 20251 yr Eurocontrol is changing to a Free route airspace. No more airways and just directs. Different airspace zones are updating to the new norm at different time. That's why some countries still use airways... and others just directs. Miguel Leandro

June 25, 2025Jun 25 More and more countries within Europe are adopting/moving towards FRA (Free Route Airspace) concept. This eliminates the requirement of having ground based navigational facilities and relying solely on GPS/GNS. Many ground based beacons are slowly decommissioned and replaced by RNAV fixes. FRA allows users to route direct between any waypoints within FIR thus eliminating the need to file via a specific airway and complying with their restrictions, operators are still required to comply with danger areas or TSRs. According to Euro control - this saves fuel to the airlines as well as optimises airspace usage. Within UK alone - Western part of London FIR is all FRA above FL245 similarly most of Scottish FIR is also FRA above FL245. I reckon at some point all will be transitioned to FRA.
