May 15, 20251 yr There’s a waypoint in Russian airspace called A R SES , which I once spotted on my route and so I couldn’t resist the opportunity to request a direct route. I’m sure it’s been done many times before and the Russian controllers are probably well aware and fed up of it. However when the typically gruff sounding Russian controller came back with “ cleared direct to A R SES” I was unable to respond promptly due to being creased up with laughter. There’s quite a few of these sorts waypoints, on the 747 it wasn’t unknown to get on the flight deck to find mischievous colleagues from the previous sector had left some amusing waypoints on the FMC fix page. Sadly the 787 deletes any fixes at the end of each flight so such school boy pranks aren’t possible. 787 captain.
