Rude UK waypoint names to be changed

Featured Replies

I’m sure this will bring a smile to many of you. Some UK waypoint names are to be changed as they’re deemed offensive. Wouldn’t want that would we? 🤣

Just more inane, petty stuff the govt. is wasting money and time on.  Probably some useless drone in the DEI office came up with this bright idea. Aren't there more important issues to worry abou

  • There’s a waypoint in Russian airspace called A R SES , which I once spotted on my route and so I couldn’t resist the opportunity to request a direct route. I’m sure it’s been done many times bef

Is "PIKEY" a bad word in UK English?

Over here in the U.S. that's a fairly common last name and definitely not a bad word.

Apparently.  I always thought it was a description of a slightly dodgy wheeler-dealer who might try to sell you a car. You'd later find out you were in possession of a vehicle held together by several hundred yards of welding rod.

I was never aware there was any racial connotation.

Mind you, I'm a thick-skinned, sixty two year old and well on my way to becoming a dinosaur, so all this 'I cherish my right to be offended' stuff tends to go over my head...

They had one for PIKEY 🤣

It’s not a word I use. It’s probably associated with gypsies / travellers - who have a poor reputation for illegally parking their caravans on land and having been ordered to vacate generally leave a disgusting mess.

I think it reflects more on the sensitivities of the generation now becoming AT Controllers.

Sadly Pete Pitman - a British ATC advisor for Radar Contact - is no longer a member here on AvSim. It would be interesting to hear his thoughts.

Agreed. Pete Pitman told me they could occasionally create names back in his time. They took great pleasure of coming up with amusing but relevant idents. Not easy when you’re restricted to just five letters that have to be pronounceable and easily understood.

I always thought UPGAS was the best. The accel point for BA Concorde for the flights departing LHR for the other side of the pond. It still exists but now in the North Sea instead south of Cardiff.

It's a funny display of how language and its semantics are re-interpreted by each generation.

I’m not sure what’s worse. The sensitivities of the younger generation or the authorities in caving in.

For a native Portuguese these are perfectly normal waypoints 😁 but a German bizjet I once saw with

"D-CONA"

was hilarious 🤣

I wonder what these people would do if they encountered words which are actually offensive.  Heart attack?
