As of the last couple of weeks I am having a LOT of issues getting VatSpy working... lots of "VATSPY has stopped working" errors..... there has not been an update in quite a long time, has anyone heard of an update in the works, or a solution to not being able to connect?

It's probably an issue with the XML file that contains the config - known bug it's been an issue for years. I haven't run into it in a while.

If you search how to clear that you can find the path, somewhere in AppData I think. Delete it and it restores everything to default, should work.

I second Vatsim Radar. Even comes with a windows app. The refresh rate is so good I use it for my taxi charts at times while on vatsim. 

It does way more then Vatspy.

Switched from vatspy to vatsim-radar. After few days, never looked back
