Yeah, don't have to do the road. I didn't mean the bridge. Also, the motorway is the M6. Sorry for the pressure, just excited about this project finally happening. oh and don't bother with the shopping centres. YOU'RE TOO KIND! 😄 To be fair, I'm not that one pilot from 15+ years ago that illegally landed his helicopter on a shopping centre roof in Athlone. 😂

The M6 is there, it is only a two lane road though, but it is there

Haha oh my, there is cannon behind the city of athlone.

If ultimate terrain x europe covers ireland, thats hands down the best bang for your buck for vecror stuff, lakes, rivers, shorelines, beaches, railyards, etc. with using VOR and GPS youll be fine in ifr conditions.

just dont run into the church, or the radio tower, they are fairly close to the airbase.

Sadly, I can't have 3rd party payware. Our family had a virus scare a few years ago and are now highly against payware as they could be viruses. I have been physically to Athlone so I am aware of the Church's existence.

Before I forget, will you be removing the trees where they shouldn't be? For example where the autogen puts them in the Barracks and stuff? I am also wondering where your area covers a bit west of Athlone, for example some of the housing estates, shops and Duogue, a small countryside area outside the town. Also, do you have any idea how long this will take and is there any chance of putting the finished file on Simviation for e.g. or is this an AVSIM exclusive?

Oh, I see. The issue is, I meant the Athenry one not existing, not the Craughwell. I know that exists.

As in, what is outlined in blue. The other one is fine, it is just the blue is what I meant by the motorway.

OH AND I JUST REALISED,  YOU ALSO HAVE THE SAME IRISH VFR SCENERY WITH CLONMACNOISE AND THE IRISH LANDMARKS!

Neat! I understand from the looks of it that it is still in an early stage, as in the ground and the 2d autogen mesh colliding with each other looking off, or the barracks walls not being there yet. I wonder how long the project will take? Oh and I STILL can't express HOW GRATEFUL I AM! I GENUINELY DID NOT EXPECT FOR YOU TO INCLUDE THE TOWN! THIS IS ACTUALLY GENUINELY QUITE A PASSIONATE PROJECT!

I can try to finish it today, tbh i wouldnt get too hung up on the motorway, because i promise in poor conditions the pilots are using navigation.

Also, yes i will tighten up the landclass work. Most of it is just place holding for the moment. As far as trees, i actually need to add a bunch not remove. Trust me trees are needed to make it look good.

Last night before bed i did a low visibility, 18 knot/26mph gust approach in the rain. Im telling you, this project is legit as is. Just wait until its finished and it will be something you'll spend hours just shooting approaches.

Sounds good! Then, if you're up to it, the hospitals can come next.

Well, realistic placements right? 🤣

Of course, im using a GPS photo from late 2024. Keep in mind that nothing you see is autogen, FSX did not have athlone at all. It was nothing but green grass. Getting the town parameters correct was step 1. Then i added the first strip of concrete for the base.

the second chunk i did was a ton of VFR. I did the castle, the church, and hand placed a lot of buildings. The. Added roads, and just a handful of trees to start filling in gaps.

yesterday believe it or not, was getting the airport reference info correct so i could add an apron. I also added red blinking light effects to the radio towers. Which is super helpful in navigating final approach.

All of this requires a ton of testing. I hop into the game a lot to fly around see how things look.

I got it, I already placed both pads. I dont mind doing the lake, I will do it roughly as accurate as possible, carve the edges, etc.

Does the carving mean turning it into the cross/triangle shaped helipads?

  • Author

No... there are not triangle shaped pads. They are indeed circles.

As far as those triangles that are there, i feel you are getting hung up on the wrong details. This is FSX at the end of the day. Carving out means i click the borders of the lake so it looks good

For example... i did a giant project for KEFD ellington. Did i include every last hanger and building? No, just enough that when you shoot an approach it is believable. I only did specific landmarks that are important in shooting an approach. Do you see why small details are less important?

Giant freeware like San Diego VFR wont even run on our machines, we need P3Dv5 to run it well due to 64 vs 32 bit.

Now that i know that my freeware works on P3Dv5, i will purchase or and further develop these freeware there.  So please, give me the final creative decision on this project. The triangles would require i do a layer map or photoreal, and i do not want to.

But i looked at serval different eras of Athlone, keep in mind GPS images of athlone beyond 2017 are so blurry is not even worth it.

But at one point, there was an square H pad in the dead center, i am assuming for dropping off patients they land in the middle.

Sorry for my attitude, I was VERY immature. I am so sorry that I put pressure on you. Excitement does not really excuse my perfectionism to the point of insanity. I think I'll stop commenting and let you work on it. I am kind of distracting you anyways.
