Some cats and dogs are already that intelligent. They just lack opposable thumbs. And speech centers in their brains. Crows and octopuses are incredibly intelligent. Dolphins as well. And chimpanzees, of course. All these guys have different psychology than we do. That may be the main limitation. Google "How intelligent are [fill in the blank]" for each species. Overview: Cats and dogs: about the intelligence of a 2 year old child. Some breeds are a lot more intelligent than that. Siamese cats can be scarily intelligent. Border Collies are known for their intelligence and trainability. Crows and ravens: about the intelligence of a 7 year old child. Octopuses: high levels of problem solving skills, but probably too alien to measure and compare. Their biggest problem is a relatively short lifespan (< 5 years) and that they don't pass skills to offspring. Dolphins: often ranked second only to humans in terms of cognitive abilities. Chimpanzees: not too far behind us. The list is off the top of my head. Let me know if I've missed any. Hook Edited July 22, 2025Jul 22 by LHookins Larry Hookins Oh! My 1960 World Book encyclopedia had a chart of the 10 most intelligent animals. Pigs were at the bottom. I can guarantee that crows/ravens and octopuses were not in the chart at that time. 😄 Another animal in that chart was the horse. Horses: similar to pigs, perhaps as much intelligence as a 3 year old child. Hook Edited July 22, 2025Jul 22 by LHookins Larry Hookins Oh! July 22, 2025Jul 22 A couple of side notes. If you've never studied octopuses, they are quite fascinating. They not only have a central brain, but an additional brain in each arm. If you present them with food in a jar with a screw-on lid, they'll figure out how to unscrew the lid. Once, in a facility, crabs kept disappearing from their tank and the staff couldn't figure out why. A camera revealed that an octopus, in a tank on the other side of the room, would escape his tank, crawl across the floor to the crab tank, have a quick snack, then crawl back with no one the wiser. An octopus can fit through any opening large enough to allow passage of his eyeball. Octopuses can apparently recognize individual humans and even show affection. The bonobo, a close relative of the chimpanzee and very similar, is mostly known for their overarching urge to reproduction... or at least go through the motions... with anything standing still or even moving slowly, during most of their waking hours. This is why you don't see them in zoos. So which are more intelligent, bonobos or chimpanzees? 😄 For those whose beliefs include such things, would being reincarnated as a bonobo be a reward or a punishment? 😄 😄 One coworker had a picture of her two Siamese cats. The amount of intelligence in their eyes gave me chills. They were obviously more intelligent than we were. A friend had a couple that liked to play fetch. Once when out walking in my rural property I was "attacked" by a horsefly. If you're not familiar with them, they're much larger than houseflies. It kept hitting me on the back of my head. No matter how fast I turned, I could never catch sight of him. I pulled my t-shirt over my head Cornholio style, and went into my house. It followed me. I went to the bathroom and closed the door, trapping it in with me. I finally saw it when I backed against the wall. It gave up on annoying me and started flying back and forth. I swung a flyswatter at it, attempting to knock it out of the air. As soon as it realized it was under attack, it landed on a curtain blending in with the black color there. I swatted at it, it started flying again, and I eventually got in a solid hit. This little beggar was far too intelligent. A freaking horsefly! After learning how intelligent they are, I've decided to stick with "fish with fins and scales" but I'll make an exception for catfish, lobster, crabs, shrimp and crawfish. I do love me some crawfish etouffee. 😄 Hook Edited July 22, 2025Jul 22 by LHookins Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
