December 7, 2025Dec 7 By finishing 3rd today at Abu Dhabi, Lando Norris wins the 2025 F1 championship by two points over Max Verstappen, 423 to 421. Max Verstappen won the race. Love him or hate him, you've got to admit, Verstappen made it an extremely exciting finish to the season. Great overall F1 season! Congrats to the Brits👍 Edited December 7, 2025Dec 7 by tdflightsim Tom MAKA = Make America Kind Again
December 10, 2025Dec 10 Stopped watching F1 when Nigel Mansell left. Surely not everybody was kung fu fighting. https://rationalwiki.org

One driver died earlier in the time trials. Swede Savage died during the race and a pit crew member died when while responding to a crash a fire truck that was also responding hit him. One memory from when I watched it over 50 years ago was the crash at the start of the race. The vehicle flew into the barrier that protected the crowd while spewing fuel all over it, then continued spinning on the track and finally came to rest; the driver’s legs can be seen protruding from the front of the vehicle where the nose was knocked off.

I wasn't even a teenager back then and had never heard of F1 before, but due to the accident it suddenly was all over the news. The accident just made me aware of F1. The Indy 1973 start pile up reminds me of the accident at the beginning of the Italian GP of 1978 when Ronnie Peterson lost his life. The 60s and 70s were dangerous times for race drivers.

It was more about recalling a memorable moment in sports, and how quickly things can go south in car racing. Later that year when I was a senior in high school, I took an elective course on sports literature, and that race was one of the things we discussed. The teacher threw out the question: is the Indianapolis Speedway the modern world’s equivalent of the ancient Roman Coliseum, with drivers as gladiators?
December 11, 2025Dec 11 Author Two of my all time favorite F1 drivers are mentioned here, Niki Lauda and Ronnie Peterson. I know I mentioned this in another thread some time ago, but I never saw anyone drive a race car as well as Ronnie Peterson! Maybe the best racer I ever witnessed. RIP Ronnie. The best of the best!!! I stopped watching Indycar racing when there was a fist fight in the winner's circle (wasn't at Indy). Your teacher might have been right. Is racing considered a blood sport? Hook Larry Hookins Oh!
