Well it was working just prior to SU4.  So I think they accidentally broke something

Maybe with all that night overhaul and sepia removal

  • I am looking into Europe data a bit now, but it’ll probably be added after the first public release. 👍

kiwikat is improving this but here's a few general comparisons to what this is actually doing.  And yes it works perfectly in 2020 (one of those rare things I'll admit lol) - my shots are in 2024 thou

@kiwikat

I gave this a go tonight quickly over central Spain.

My first thoughts are, really encouraging.  However I still find the limitations of the sim a bit immersion breaking.  At cruise altitude I would get far away freeways lit up that would disappear as I got closer.  For me it's a bit immersion breaking to see that.

I know it's a limitation with the sim, not with your add-on.  It looked absolutely amazing around the aircraft.  I really hope this limitation can be tackled somehow.  (This was in SU5.  I know it's a lot better than in SU4)

I dropped you a vote for mod of the month on flightsim.to, as I feel it's such a massive benefit to have properly dark scenes at night.  It looked really good.  Just wish we could have the effect all the way to the horizon.

If you have REX ATMOS or ActiveSky, if you limited the view distance to just where these distant highways are seen ??

You read my mind.  I've just tried that.

I really really dislike Rex Atmos as a product, it's UI.  Problem is then you are making it hazy during the day too.  I did try bringing haze in and even in the cruise I could see lights pop out as they got closer.  Not sure it's a long term solution.  Let me know if you find a preset that looks good.

Yeah i've just fired it up again with the AB Atmos presets.

It's really close to perfection this, but a bit of a buzzkill when on snapping to a window view you get some lit streets disappear out in the distance suddenly.

Very close. So nice not to have glowing bright rural areas at night.  If they could push whatever is culling the street lights out another 25% that would be perfect.  (or all the way to the horizon at about FL390).  At the moment you start noticing it about FL250 and upwards.  I'd be happy to test more extensively if you need me to @kiwikat, but it seems like we are up against a brick wall with the sim even on SU5 beta.

For anyone looking to use this wonderful add on in MSFS 2024 SU5, using Rex Atmos, particle scattering needs to be on 0.15.  That gives you haze at about the moment that the lights stop getting culled.  It looks good during the day (but obviously a bit more hazy, but not too much), and at night you don't get the popout effect.  I have an Atmos preset under "Langeveldt" for this.  It looks wonderful, now I'm going to go and fly.  Properly good atmospherics in the day, and no more glowing rural areas.

hello foggy days

DarkStreets is working quite well in SU5 beta now!

Just FYI, the higher TLOD you run the further out in the distance the lights are culled.  It looks quite nice now with TLOD 300.  But I run Auto FPS and sometimes for rural/country flights I set it to 600 and that looks superb!

Yep I've tried Atmos and just can't get along with it.  Ended up flying in what looked like the atmosphere of Venus in order to cull the distant lights.

I've got the superb DLOD extender that is updated already, running a LOD of 400.  Well I still get some very distant highways showing at cruise altitude, but I guess I'll have to make that tradeoff for it looking better all round.  Let's hope Asobo can implement something that culls all the way to the horizon.  Wonderful mod.

Much better would be that Asobo realizes that this mod has to be included in their base data and remove the rural road lighting altogether. That would help all users and make exclusion unneccessary.

I'm amazed it's not getting raved about more.

I am not amazed actually. The priorities of the players have changed quite a bit.

The players of today are happy as long as they can stroll around in airport interiors and fly the plane from the highly detailed cabin.
