IM's Scampton is very good, and captures the atmosphere of a Cold War V-bomber base perfectly ( I know - I lived on them as a boy 😉 ).  The only problem is the lack of an ILS, which I consider essential for the Vulcan at night and/or in poor weather. I wonder if it's possible to do a mod ??

What did you think of the Jaguar? I bought it over the weekend, only had a very quick run in it  but didn’t immediately gel with it. I parked it up and got the Hawk out instead!

I put the wing tanks on and went low level from Valley to Fort William and back via the Lake District , quite challenging in yesterday’s heavy rain in Scotland 

I've done some circuits but .... TIME !!! I might go back to work so I have more of it ! 😄

Have the Waddo and Scampton from IO but not had a proper look at them yet

In real life she didn't fly the Mach loop because roll agility was insufficient at tactical speeds (250 kts+). You'll find out that the JF Vulcan is the same. 🙂

Yes, BUT…

the Mach Loop is regularly flown by “portly” aircraft 😁

And IIRC, someone just IRL flew a KC-135 through it, so there IS hope!

IMHO, if you’re in a Vulcan or similarly limited aircraft, you’d just do what they would’ve had to do on a real mission: balloon up to clear the terrain for a few seconds, or (less likely) slow down to make the turn.

Okay, so I finally got around to this!

According to some superficial research, Vulcan Cold War low level sections were performed in the low to mid 300 kts. The airframe is limited to less than 3G’s when loaded. And thankfully, there’s a G-meter right under the glare shield 😁

Departed at high weight out of RAF Valley, flew direct to Aberdyfi inlet, then overhead Machynlleth to join the loop. 

Anything over 310 knots generates extremely slow control response. I can only imagine doing this over low, rolling terrain. However, maintaining at or below 300, responsiveness is quite adequate, if still sedate

Staying ahead of the aircraft with judicious throttle work and planned cornering netted a successful trip around the loop. Tight corners went down to low 200’s, and kept the G’s under 3

TBH, the only tough part was, as usual, the final stretch between Corris and Machynlleth. Like most aircraft (except helos), you need to be ridge hopping instead of canyon carving through there. 

Went most of the way back round again, departing the loop at Dinas Mawddwy, waved pass the Cross Foxes Inn, and stayed low level until past the Barmouth inlet.

Direct back to Valley, and that was it!

So could a Vulcan actually get around the Loop? If JF’s physics are accurate, then YES is the answer! 😎👍

You CAN do all the tight turns at 180-220 kts.
But then you have to watch out for those Lancasters overtaking you..... 😉

Have you tried a simulated 'bucket of instant sunshine' flight ? Say Waddo or Scampton scramble ( or even Finningley )  then fly East until ..... What would the profile be ?

Non-Stealth combat profiles for deep strike through peer level defenses are always going to be High-Low-High. You go high for transit to just outside OpFor air defense, then drop to a very low level route maximizing terrain masking and avoidance of known air defenses, deliver the bucket via toss launch (if you get that far), and then get the heck out of Dodge via a different low level egress route. AFAIK, it was known a significant number of those flights were going to be one-way trips if for no other reason than self immolation.  Particularly the single seat strikers whose job it was to open a path with smaller “buckets”.

ive never gone looking, so I don’t know if any of those flight plans were ever open sourced. Theoretically, cruise missiles would use very similar routes, so probably not published or acknowledged.

Wouldn’t be too hard to figure out tho - the list of major military bases/targets is very well known - so all you’d need is a topo map to figure out a preferred route. 

IIRC, there are even published maps that chart out known air defenses based on OSInt sat imagery, so one could throw that into the mix, too. 🤙
