Luxury air travel not a luxury here..

Pretty soon flying across the country will be like crossing in a wagon and crossing the ocean akin to crossing on the Mayflower.

Several years ago I saw a picture of a pair of passengers in wide seats with trays holding a sumptuous looking dinner.  One of the passengers was saying, "Think of what air travel will look like 20 years from now."

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

In the meantime, AA CEO Robert Isom received $1,400,000 salary and $3,600,000 performance bonus and $8,000,000 in stock awards.

The person taking the blame, AA maintenance worker in Tulsa Oklahoma earning $79,000/yr.

As nVidia’s CEO Jenson Huang once said in an engineers meeting “you’re making me look bad”.

I was somewhat skeptical of the story at first, because the aircraft in question appears to have spent less than two hours on the ground in New York before flying Westbound to Orange County and wasn’t hasn’t spent significant time out of service. However I reached out to American Airlines more than day ago about the incident and haven’t heard back. I will update this post if they respond.

Uh, judging from those pictures we now know who is getting the Pheasant Under Glass anniversary menus.

That post is from February 10 2024, two years ago. It wasn't updated. I'm guessing American Airlines didn't respond.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

It looks like the only report of this is from flyertalk.com and published on viewfromthewing and reposted on aviationa2z citing the viewfromthewing article. I can't find any other mention of it.

If anyone has any confirmation this actually happened, please post here. Thanks.

If I were qualified and seriously in the running for an airline pilot job I think I might shoot exclusively for one of the large freight carriers. UPS, FEDEX, ATLAS etc. Freight doesn’t get drunk, have fights, open emergency doors, whine, have lavatory needs or  be afflicted by the various loon bugs affecting society today.

About 12 years ago I remember taking Norwegian between the US West Coast and Europe, roughly 10 hour flights. A small water or soft drink was like $5, and a sandwich maybe $10. But it was ok. I knew all about it beforehand. The roundtrip ticket with all the taxes and fees was something like $280. I brought and empty bottle to fill with water at a drinking fountain after security, and a few snacks like pretzel sticks and goldfish, and it was totally fine. The economy seats and entertainment on the 787 were more or less the same as on any other airline. It actually felt great to be traveling so cheaply. But if you don't know what's in store for you like the poor SOB's (I mean souls on board) in the article, yeah, that would be a hellish flight for sure.

What they paid in 1970 is probably more than a first class seat would cost today - and at least internationally, First is way better than what it was in 1970. You get what you pay for.

Flew to Japan in 1989 to attend the 100th Anniversary celebration of a Bicycle company, all Expenses paid.

Japan Air Lines 747, and where everyone sat towards the front in the non smoking section, I changed my seat assignment to the back in the Smoking section, where I could light up. Fortunately, that Section was not full, and I had the luxury of having an entire center row of seats where I could stretch out. The Food service was the best I ever had travelling by airplane; Dinner was a half Japanese fare of Soba noodles in dipping sauce, a mix of Sushi and Sashimi, some Tempura shrimp, Soup, pickled vegetables and Rice. The other half was a small Filet Mignon, Broccoli crowns, Potatoes, Fruit chunks and a cup of Soup. I was also provided with several Drink tickets so I definitely had my fill of Cocktails. Remember... these were also the days of nice porcelain Dinnerware and metal Utensils!

Plus, the Food service assumed that it was a fully seated Flight, for us in the back there was the added option of Seconds if anyone wanted it! 🫡

I flew first class only once.  I was flying from KSFO to KPSP on the Wed. before Thanksgiving on
Alaska Airlines.  It was a little stormy that evening and there was kind of a rush to get out.  The

Boarding agents said everyone just get on and quickly take a seat anywhere.  I sat in a first class
seat and got the nice snack tray and a free beer.

Our flights to and from Europe this year were Premium Plus seats just behind the First Class section.
plenty of legroom and the wine flowed like water! 🍷 🍷 🍷 🍷<-----YUP! 😵‍💫
