February 21Feb 21 I have i5-10600K (overclocked) + 32 GB DDR4 + RTX 4070. Output to three monitors, each 2560×1440. In many 3D scenarios FPS is dropped to 15-20 and almost always shows “Limited by mainthread”! I want to upgrade the CPU. I’m considering two options: 1. Intel i7-14700K with old my DDR4 (need new CPU + motherboard) 2. Ryzen 7 7800X3D (need new CPU + motherboard + DDR5) Option 2 would be better, but it’s twice as expensive because I would need to buy DDR5 (and it’s very expensive right now). Which option would you recommend? And what kind of fps increase will I get in these options, approximately? Edited February 21Feb 21 by SMN204
February 21Feb 21 I have 14900KF, with DDR4, and it runs MSFS2024 and VR paired with 9070XT, it runs very well without any hicups. The chip overclocks very well and as long as you are feeding enough power, at vcore 1.24, it overclocks Pcore at 6.0 or 6.1 with Ecores at 4.5, but i run the Pcores at 5.9 and Ecores at 4.5 and I am happy with it. It does run hot, but if you have a good aircooling or watercooling, it will be fine. DDR5 ram right now is very expensive, so AMD, I would rule it out if you want to upgrade during this time.
February 21Feb 21 I can’t speak of the AMD, but I upgraded from a 10700K to a 14700K, paired with a 4090, runs extremely well with most addons plus AI. I’m very happy with it.
February 22Feb 22 I upgraded from 10850K to 9800X3D. Runs at 70C flat out, undervolted and overclocked. Great performance, very happy with it Kevin Firth - AMD 9800X3D; Asus Prime X670E; 64Gb Cas30 6000 DDR5; RTX5090; AutoFPS
February 22Feb 22 Author 9 hours ago, TWSY said: 7800X3D It’s clear that if you’re choosing between the 7800X3D and the 14700K from the start, Ryzen is obviously preferable! That’s not up for discussion. What I’m talking about is that I want to get min stable 25–30 FPS on my three 1440p monitors with an RTX 4070, while spending as little as possible. So the question is roughly this: Is $900 (go to AM5 with a 7800X3D) vs $500 (stay on the Intel 14700K) equivalent to the benefit I would get? The prices listed are what I can actually buy them for right now. So I’m leaning toward the 14700 in my particular situation. Edited February 22Feb 22 by SMN204
