MSFS 2024 VORs

Featured Replies

Is there any plan to make the VORs in MSFS 2024 more realistic as far as distance when you can tune and get radials to/from? They are currently dismally inadequate and I am hoping there is an update planned or 3rd party available….?

The DMEs are better but tuning in the VOR and getting positional information is woefully inadequate.

Swear this is a repost? I use VOR with no issues. Rarely do i ever fly direct to a VOR. Rather i use them to get me to my next fix or VOR with a little bit of geometry. But i tend to pick most up around 45-55 miles, but i picked up GPT 100 miles out earlier.

Unfortunately, the same issue is with the ILSs; people don't realize or care. Just wait for these developers to come up with steam-gauge airplanes that can't navigate certain segments unless they have some kind of GPS with an extensive database. INS, LTN, LORAN, OMEGA, with a very limited waypoint database or manual entry, will not cut it.

I am confused, what is wrong with VOR and ILS? I fly steam gauge

Yes, I'm curious as well. I have flown steam gauges for some time, but certainly not an expert. What's wrong with it?

@Sweetd31 and @JonathanC this sim has some discrepancies in signal strength and DME readings. For example, for an ILS, the minimum is typically 18 NM, but some locations have longer extended ranges. On the VOR, we still have low-altitude airways (L) with reliable accuracy of 40 NM, and high-altitude airways (J) with an expanded range of 100 to 130 NM. Unfortunately, this sim doesn't perform well with NDB, VOR, or ILS signals, and I don't believe ASOBO will fix it. Surprisingly, many airplanes and locations around the world still require this level of navigation accuracy despite the GPS.

Not to mention that in non-doppler VORs they should also model line of sight, namely in montainous areas...

This has never been correctly modelled although I did get the idea that the VORs in Hawai in my dear MS FLIGHT were modeleled correctly according to line-of-sight restrictions (?)

I've been simulating mostly modern airliner flights, but sometimes I tune some long range VORs and get them from as far as 140+ NM

Strange that many in the thread don't seem to know what you mean.

I do!  VOR range... it's simply far shorter than in the real world.  I'm flying airliners at the moment but when flying GA and tracking VORs, more often than not I can't pick up VORs that I know would be within range in the real world.  And I'm not talking about VORs that have been deprecated to 'DME only' (that did catch me out initially, many moons ago!).

I think for most VORs, Asoboa have just programmed a simple "visible within 40 miles" code, and left it at that.
