MSFS 2024 – Runway/taxiway/city lights too big at night

Featured Replies

Hi,

Night lights (runway, taxiway and city) look too large and unrealistic, with a strong glow/halo effect.

Is this normal in MSFS 2024 or is there any fix, mod or setting to reduce the light size/bloom?

Thanks.

Not that I know of.

This used to be even worse.  It's slightly improved in SU5 (beta) though.

Apparently Asobo thinks that lights should be viewed as if they were through a camera lens.

I would also recommend this addon

Thanks a lot for the info, really appreciate it. I’ll definitely give that addon a try.

I’ve just moved from 2020 to 2024 and honestly I didn’t expect this aspect to feel worse.

On my very first flight I actually had to turn off the landing lights because they were creating a sort of dense white fog in front of the aircraft… pretty surreal.

Really hope Asobo revisits this at some point, as it breaks immersion quite a bit.

Turn off the light shafts in settings. Should fix the landing lights issue.

SU5 will bring some better looking cities and night elements though.  It's definitely an improvement over SU4.  What I also love is finally we get obstruction lighting... the red flashing lights on towers etc... it actually looks very nice.  EDIT:  Oh I also bought the new airport lighting from the marketplace...  I'm trying to remember which dev but the lights seem to look nicer!

I looked them up the dev is FLYT and the product is Enhanced Runway Lights in the marketplace

Here's what my sim looks like with the airport lighting pack, and SU5 beta - as I said, a definite improvement from SU4

Night graphics are in general an improvement over MSFS2020 except for being too bright in any moonlight other than full moon and one other gripe is that you get street lights on major highways well away from built up areas - but this has always been the case in earlier sims as well.

You absolutely need avsim resident kiwikat's DarkStreets addon!  There's a LOD bug (that's improved with SU5 beta) that doesn't allow it to work the best it could but it's still A LOT better than default.  It essentially wipes out the stupid rural lights except for where actual small towns and lighting would be.  It works worldwide!

I’ll definitely try the FLYT Enhanced Runway Lights and also kiwikat’s DarkStreets addon.

I’ve just switched from 2020 to 2024 and was quite surprised to see some lighting looking worse in certain situations. Yesterday I also noticed the strobe lights looked pretty unrealistic, almost like going back to FSX/P3D days.

Looking forward to seeing what SU5 brings!

Interesting, is this a screen resolution issue?  The runway lights seem “correct” in SU4 but the PAPI lights are far too dim.  Does this add-on allow for adjustments to user preference?  And, does it allow changes to brightness of PAPI lights?

That mod is an utter game changer.  I can't believe it's free, or that it isn't in the base game to start with.  Completely transforms night flying.

I wish the moon wasn't so bright also.  You can make out fields and stuff while flying at midnight which is pretty crazy.

Yeah I see the same.  But I begin to wonder if it's a monitor issue.  Cause a few others I asked said on their monitor the textures look almost pitch black.  I don't have her or a very fancy monitor.  OLED would probably help with the blacks though.

Too dim? Oh interesting.  They seem far too bright to me.  They're like huge and annoying.  Irl they can be huge and annoying but only if the tower sets the lighting to high.

Night too bright:

EDIT: this are 4K res snaps so you'll want to view full screen.

Hmmm... - I do not see anything wrong here. Actually, Rwy lights are bright at night, especially the PAPI lights that need to be seen in dark/hazy conditions. But I wished the taxiway lights would be more dim.  🙂

Best regards,
Holger
