Problem with Couatl

Featured Replies

I have a problem which I cannot resolve.

I experimented with Freemesh global but found it gave the old Dxdiag error, despite my having the registry fixes applied.

I deleted it but it seems to have corrupted GSX. I can get the GSX menu to load but once I select an item and the 'choose operator' (or whatever) comes up, it immediately stops with the message

"addon (unknown) has caused couatl to stop" (maybe not the exact words). If I tell it to restart, the same thing happens.

This is the log produced for the latest attempt:

couatl v5.0 (build 6565)

[00:04:35.078] GSX SimStop

I have re-installed GSX and restored my files from backups done 2 days before, when everything worked. I re-installed the Graphic driver. No change.

It happens at all 3 airports I tried (all with no additional programs running) VHHH,EGCC and FACT.

Suggestions as to what to do next would be extremely welcome.

NB The simulator P3Dv5.4  is running perfectly without GSX operating.

Just to add, I did not delete and re-install gsx, I just ran the installer and let it re-install.

This is a known issue with the latest build, there doesn't appear to be a workaround. It has been reported by multiple people in the FSDreamteam P3D forum. Umberto will no doubt have a look in due course but he prioritises MSFS and appears to be away at the moment. It may take a few weeks to fix. I realise it's too late now but if you have GSX working, don't ever update it as every update seems to cause problems.

As Simfan reports there are ongoing issues with GSX both in MSFS and P3D. Despite running an older release I hit a problem at GMMN this morning when attempting to adjust aircraft and stop positions. Couatl64 crashed.

I would strongly urge everyone to make a backup of a good GSX install. Umberto did eventually give the instructions after I asked about restoring a previous version.

Something as simple as this command line to do a BACKUP:

ROBOCOPY "C:\Program files (x86)\Addon manager" "F:\MyBackupUSBDisk\Addon manager" /MIR

And this to RESTORE:

ROBOCOPY "F:\MyBackupUSBDisk\Addon manager" "C:\Program files (x86)\Addon manager" /MIR

You can save those two lines as two separate .BAT files called BACKUP_GSX.BAT and RESTORE_GSX.BAT, and there's your rollback ready to use.

I think there might be more to this than Add-on manager replacement.

I have now tried complete Add-on manager replacements from 3 different backups: Feb. Mar. and April of this year. Each one has caused Couatl to crash immediately on P3D loading, whereas before it "only" crashed when the GSX menu was accessed.

For the time being, I shall revert to the latest one and just cancel couatl when it asks to restart.

Nothing more to do!

What annoys me is FSDT releasing a major update then disappearing off his support forum. He hasn’t logged on since Thursday afternoon but did find time to reply to comments on the FSDT Facebook group.

The support forum should take priority which also includes MSFS users.

That sounds like a different problem. What did the panic log produce? Have you posted this problem on the support forum?

You can also look at Event Viewer for errors in the last hour.

I had a look but there are quite a few with the same type of problem, so I didn't post as well.

Event viewer says error in Couatl64 P3D.exe. ucrtbase.dll.

Hi Ian,

Doesn’t make any sense to me. He still hasn’t logged on to his forum.

I looked for the GSX manual as I wanted to learn about what has changed. There are two help documents with the MSFS one recently updated. The P3D one hasn’t been updated for 5 years.

So whilst he might be adding features to the P3D version without an up to date manual it’s hard to understand them.

Once these problems are resolved I think I’ll lock it down with no more updates.

Keep in mind that COUATL64.EXE is just the core executable; the actual GSX logic is in a bunch of compiled Python files. Those can and do change on a very regular basis, and are likely shared between versions (FSX/P3D/MSFS).

That sounds extremely sensible. Once and IF it gets going again, I will do the same.

I have now posted this on the FSDT forum.

It is actually a holiday weekend here on this side of the globe since Thursday so maybe that's why he is AWOL just now.

He’s Swiss. But why not just post a notice saying there won’t be any support? He logged back on yesterday but gave no explanation for his week’s absence.

Well, I have just loaded P3D after doing an update and GSX is working, "almost" properly. He seems to have patched it by removing the choice of Operator. Catering just turns up in a generic van, stairs move into place with no logos. Passengers load. That's as far as I have gone so far.

Edit. Just completed pushback. That all seems fine. Not doing a flight today, so I hope landing is also 'fixed'.
