  1. Rich,Why does it have to be in terrain mode? FSNav IIRC did not have that feature and was quite suitable. Perhaps it could be selectable. Would that save a few FPS?Cheers,Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern Australia
  2. My favourite features of FSNav were the drag and drop flightplan creation, direct export to FS and the F9 hotkey to the MMD. Cheers and thanks all for their efforts,Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern Australia

  4. That's a shame, because it worked perfectly well for me... My MSFS installation with SP1/SP2/DX10 has never worked better.Cheers,Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern Australia
  5. Bill,I am using the SP2/Vista/DX10 version... I first check the fuel cocks are open.I have a CH Throttle Quadrant, but to operate the Condition Levers, I first have them off on the Quadrant as well as the sim, when they spool up to 10%, I move the levers in the sim to high idle, then I move the appropriate lever on the quadrant up immediately after.Auto mixture in the realism setting plays no part whatsoever with the Condition Lever setting on a TP engine, it's for setting the fuel air ratio on a reciprocating engine, which needs to be varied with altitude. Also I definately always start in Manual mode, and move the rocker switch into the Autostart position once I have the generators online. One trick is to check the annunciators for what may be left undone or what is wrong startup config wise.Cheers and have fun. It took me a couple of hours to sort out the idiocyncracies with this bird, but it was well worth it.Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern AustraliaIntel Core 2 Duo E6700ASUS P5N32-E SLI Deluxe Motherboard4GB Corsair VS DDR2 667Mhz RAMInno3D 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 590MHz VideoASUS MW221u 21" Wide Screen LCD2 x 320Gb WD SATA DrivesCreative X-Fi Platinum Sound Lian Li PC-B20B Aluminium Black CaseMS Vista Ultimate OEMCH FlightSim Yoke USBCH Pro Pedals USBCH Throttle Quadrant USBTrackIR 4 Pro and Track ClipMSFS FSX Deluxe Edition Full install at 1400x960x32

  7. Thanks Ron,I have the Twin Commanche and Columbia/Cessna 400 working well in DX10. I am waiting for the release of the SR22 G3 as I forgot to but the FSX version of the G2 when it was released. I only have the FS9 version. The previous 2 mentioned work superbly.Cheers,Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern Australia
  8. >What about on a separate HDD - Is that no longer beneficial>either?Hi Phil,I have a seperate 320GB hard disk that is dedicated to FSX and it's add ons's and downloaded files only.Cheers,Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern AustraliaIntel Core 2 Duo E6700ASUS P5N32-E SLI Deluxe Motherboard4GB Corsair VS DDR2 667Mhz RAMInno3D 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 590MHz VideoASUS MW221u 21" Wide Screen LCD2 x 320Gb WD SATA DrivesCreative X-Fi Platinum Sound Lian Li PC-B20B Aluminium Black CaseMS Vista Ultimate OEMCH FlightSim Yoke USBCH Pro Pedals USBCH Throttle Quadrant USBTrackIR 4 Pro and Track ClipMSFS FSX Deluxe Edition Full install at 1400x960x32
  9. Hi Larry,I too had a contaminated FSX install giving me a whole lot of grief. A few days ago I took out 2 whole days out of my schedule to follow David Roch's excellent SP2 guide and did a reinstall. Defragging the 2 x 320GB HD's took the longest as Vista wanted to do them both each time. The upshot is that I finally got SP2 on, working and was able to buy the DA Cheyenne. It's a magnificent example of just how well the best of our hobby can deliver. There are a couple of quirks with the Trimble, but there are work arounds that avoid, not eliminate the CDT's.I would urge you to give it a go.Cheers and all the best,Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern AustraliaIntel Core 2 Duo E6700ASUS P5N32-E SLI Deluxe Motherboard4GB Corsair VS DDR2 667Mhz RAMInno3D 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 590MHz VideoASUS MW221u 21" Wide Screen LCD2 x 320Gb WD SATA DrivesCreative X-Fi Platinum Sound Lian Li PC-B20B Aluminium Black CaseMS Vista Ultimate OEMCH FlightSim Yoke USBCH Pro Pedals USBCH Throttle Quadrant USBTrackIR 4 Pro and Track ClipMSFS FSX Deluxe Edition Full install at 1400x960x32
  10. >Certainly in the next>round of titles from the studio you can expect the DX10>renderer to continue to get work on performance and new>features so supporting the DX10 code path is only going to get>more important.Phil Taylor,Given the above statement, should I have any concern as to the suitability of my 8800 GTX Video card for these "new features" for DX10, or is that something that the H/W manufacturers can address with new versions of the driver software? And yes, I totally agree with Phil M about the 3PD's who should be labelling their products in respect of their version compatibility. Is there a standard that can be used and what does each label cover? With thanks,Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern Australia
  11. Hi Phil,Thanks for all your help. I am pretty confident that most of the 3PD's will eventually migrate over to FSX SP2. I do have a couple of favourites however, and am wondering when they will be converted to run on SP2. The Digital Aviation, Carenado and Eaglesoft offerings are to my mind, the best.Cheers,Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern Australia
  12. Jim,Looks like it was my mistake :-( I installed the SP2 SDK rather than the SP2 application, all is good now and the results are pretty darn amazing. Thanks for your help, and thanks ACES, a job well done.Cheers,Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern Australia
  13. OK, i've finally figured it out and i'm pretty embarassed :-)Looks like I installed the SP2 SDK application rather than the SP2 only application. I have the right one on and now have the checkbox available.Wow what a difference... Almost double the frames (from vanilla) and with bloom on. I am really impressed with what ACES has done with this upgrade and am really looking forward to some SP2 compliant aircraft and scenery if there is such things. Thanks ACES and Phil Taylor, wonderful stuff.Cheers,Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern AustraliaIntel Core 2 Duo E6700ASUS P5N32-E SLI Deluxe Motherboard4GB Corsair VS DDR2 667Mhz RAMInno3D 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 590MHz VideoASUS MW221u 21" Wide Screen LCD2 x 320Gb WD SATA DrivesCreative X-Fi Platinum Sound Lian Li PC-B20B Aluminium Black CaseMS Vista Ultimate OEMCH FlightSim Yoke USBCH Pro Pedals USBCH Throttle Quadrant USBTrackIR 4 Pro and Track ClipMSFS FSX Deluxe Edition Full install at 1400x960x32
  14. >Do you have all of:>1)Vista>2)DX10 GPU ( nv 8xxx series and greater,ATI 2xxx series and>greater )>3)DX10 driver installed and operational>4)FSX-SP2>>If any one of those is not true, you wont see the preview>checkbox.Phil,I have just re-run the SP2 SDK installer choosing the "Repair" option ("completed successfully") and when I have a look at the Help/About MSFS screen, it still states that the sim version is SP1.Any ideas?Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern Australia
  15. >DX10 is only available on Vista.>>Even then, you need:>1) a DX10 GPU ( nv 8xxx series, ATI 2xxx series )>2) a DX10 driver for the GPU>3) a DX10 app like FSX-SP2.>>if you dont have all of these, you dont get the checkbox.Phil Taylor... It appears that I have all of the above but I still don't get the checkbox. Is there some way I can verify the SP2 installation on FSX via a version number or similar, and if so where would it be located? With thanks,Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern Australia
  16. Thanks again Phil,I did as you suggested above and in the "System" window, it indicated that the DirectX version was DirectX10, so that seems OK.Mmmmm, I wonder why the DX10 Preview does not appear???Cheers and thanks again,Chris Porter:-outtaedit: spelling
  17. Actually no, I haven't heard and quite frankly I would be surprised given the clear statements made by Phil Taylor recently.Cheers,Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern Australia
  18. >Hi Chris,>>It should be under your main FSX directory as per below.>>C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator>XSetupDX>>C: being HD you installed FSX to.>>Cheers>Phil>Melb AustraliaThanks Phil, much appreciated. Now I am concerned... I have neither the "Setup" folder nor can I see the "Preview DX10" checkbox in the Options/Graphics configuration screen. I have just done a complete re-install as per David Roch's instructions at the top of this thread.I am reasonably comfortable that my PC specs (see below) are within the requirements. Any ideas? With thanks,Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern AustraliaIntel Core 2 Duo E6700ASUS P5N32-E SLI Deluxe Motherboard4GB Corsair VS DDR2 667Mhz RAMInno3D 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 590MHz VideoASUS MW221u 21" Wide Screen LCD2 x 320Gb WD SATA DrivesCreative X-Fi Platinum Sound Lian Li PC-B20B Aluminium Black CaseMS Vista Ultimate OEMCH FlightSim Yoke USBCH Pro Pedals USBCH Throttle Quadrant USBTrackIR 4 Pro and Track ClipMSFS FSX Deluxe Edition Full install at 1400x960x32
  19. 3) DirectX Go to SETUP folder (in FSX main folder), then sub-folder DX and activate DXSETUP.exe, which will seek and install the latest update for DirectX Brilliant post David, thanks. I am however having trouble finding the above .exe file. Is it on the DVD or on the FSX installation on my machine. If so, I can't find it on either.Cheers and thanks again,Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern Australia
  20. Moving back to the top - This should be a sticky...Chris Porter:-outta
  21. FYI -Aircraft is designed for SP2 only. (warning given on installation)Darn, if this is true, it's a deal breaker for me. I am having enough issues without SP2...Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern Australia
  22. Those who have been with MSFS for a few years would remember the stony silence that had previously emerged from Redmond with very little interaction with the developers either before a release of a new version or even after the release of the sim.In recent times this situation has thankfully turned very much around with the participation of taildragger, Phil and pixelpoke amongst others. Many of us long time participants had waited for this development, however the interaction was not new in the flight simulator world with close liaisons with the developers of Pro Pilot and the FLY! series, the most notable proponent being the late and very great Richard Harvey. One of my other "simming hobbies" is the use of City Builder games. I have recently come across a development team that sets the new paradigm for developer interaction, both in terms of requesting feedback from the user community as well as openness and willingness to share with the community what is being developed at an early stage. With the commencement of the development of a new version of Microsoft's Flight Simulator series, we have a unique opportunity to get this next version RTM'd in a form that is in line with customer's expectation and able to be used with with mainstream equipment and avoid the angst that typified the FSX release. The aforementioned development team is from a group called Monte Christo. Their new title is called Cities Unlimited... The latest developer blog demonstrates the concept and to an extent the methodology behind their terrain engine. There is also a weekly poll on some aspect of the new title and there is constant and dedicated interaction from a customer relations type of guy.BTW, the site URL is... http://www.cuplanet.com/ ...you should all head over there and have a look at what can be accomplished, especially check out the forums. The appearance of Phil Taylor and his predecessors on these boards is truely welcome and a long overdue development, but as the folks on the CU website have demonstrated, the interaction can be so much more positive and an opportunity not to be missed in the runup to FSXI.Cheers,Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern Australia
  23. As always, great post Mike...Sadly for me, I have all but given up on FSX. I admit I was one of it's biggest a really excited user/boosters/supporters during its inception and upon release sang it's praises at every opportunity, despite some small niggles I was having at the time. Now some 12 months later I am all FSX'd out. I can no longer accept the frustration of continual CDT's, inability to switch between apps from outside an FSX window to an FSX window or full screen and a myriad of other errors such as oom's.Upon release in the US and the subsequent furore in the various forums about the inability of FSX to run adequately on the so called middle of the road machines of the day, I went out and spent a lot of money on what was at the time a pretty powerful machine. Although FSX runs at a decent 30 - 35 FPS average on my setup when running, I am finding the other issues mentioned above too great a source of frustration that I have for the first time since 1985, decided to spend my spare time doing something else.I truely hope that ACES and the developer community gets their collective heads together and delivers a killer version for FS11. I can't go back to FS2004 as I have tasted the forbidden fruit of the potential of FSX. The comparitively blurry FS9 ground textures etc. just does not do it for me anymore.I will be lurking around there anyway, looking for some magic bullet that will hopefully bring me back to my favourite hobby.Cheers and thanks,Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern AustraliaIntel Core 2 Duo E6700ASUS P5N32-E SLI Deluxe Motherboard4GB Corsair VS DDR2 667Mhz RAMInno3D 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 590MHz VideoASUS MW221u 21" Wide Screen LCD2 x 320Gb WD SATA DrivesCreative X-Fi Platinum Sound Lian Li PC-B20B Aluminium Black CaseMS Vista Ultimate OEMCH FlightSim Yoke USBCH Pro Pedals USBCH Throttle Quadrant USBTrackIR 4 Pro and Track ClipMSFS FSX Deluxe Edition Full install at 1400x960x32Check out my 5th Around the World flight with MS FSX at http://members.iinet.com.au/~portercbp/fly...W_05/index.html
  24. >Steve, I want to thank you again for starting this>discussion: it's the mostly useful and productive thread on>any MSFS forum I can recall.>>Some of that of course is just sharing the pain, and purging>the frustration, but I think that's cathartic and there are>useful and productive suggestions here for the future, both>for developers and Aces.>>Well done, all.>>JonAnd to add to that, we should thank ACES via Phil for their participation in this thread which in my recollection has never happened with this level of openness and candour. All sides in this debate should be congratulated and encouraged to continue in this vein.Well done all,Chris Porter:-outtaPerthWestern Australia
