  1. I'm dual booting Vista with FSX, and XP with FS9. When using Vista, I'd like to be able to dl files from avsim and store the fs9 stuff directly on the XP install drive. For some reason (UAC nightmare?) I can't save files when using Vista to my XP drive, says I don't have permission but I'm an administrator?Any ideas how I can do this other than turning off UAC?
  2. Sure...Get your FSX settings from the Vancouver+ FSX manual suggestions, they are a great place to start. You'll need to DL and install nHancer, delete it's existing FS config and create a new config for FSX to get AA to work. Suggested settings are on the forum, search for nhancer.Add the out of memory tweak search for OOM, and add mipbias=6 to your fsx config. Consider the bufferpools tweak too since you have lots memory on the video card. That should get you going real nice, I'd o/c the CPU too :)Have fun, if you need more details just ask.
  3. Nice review, but I missed it mentioning the biggest weakness of the X52 joystick... is its so loose, the springs lack any resistance at all, at least the store demo I tried?I prefer the lower costing AV8R.
  4. >>However, I found that you can change the settings to the>traditional Windows appearance, and I know now how to click on>properties to change the security settings of a file. It is>working much better now, but for a home user like me I really>don't see the point of it compared to XP.>How do you stop a specific program from bringing up the UAC warning popup. Example, I run CPU-Z often to check my CPU speed and settings. Despite running the same program, Vista keeps poping up the warning. I'd like to be able to flag programs as OK to run, but can't see how?
  5. Agree 100%, I've seen it so many times, an employee gets involved on the web usually a forum, regarding a product. Instead of people using it as a chance to learn and give and get feedback, some attack and generally act rude. Often, in the end the employee stops posting or even quits his job. Just check AVS forums for examples of that.MS has been 1st class with FSX. They could have just released FSX and left it as is, but instead they have been amazing with public support and information from the developers, add to that the service packs and add ons in development.I was very frustrated with FSX performance on my last PC, but on a new PC is a really amazing sim, and the support from MS by people like Phil is even better.
  6. What's your def of slow? That system needs to have the CPU o/c to 3-3.2Ghz, and it will fly with settings turned up with selection. Will have very fast load times and be able to lock frame rate at 25 1920x1200 at all but places like JFK / over New York city. Plus you'll have 2-3 cores ready to run other programs, such as Google Earth real time tracking flights on a 2nd monitor, etc.Any you can build it a lot cheaper than $4000 too, and FSX will be very enjoyable on it, IMO.
  7. I have both Vista and XP installed on my new machine. Vista is fine now, stable, lots of drivers, it has some features that can be real annoying but I don't see any reason to wait if you want to use it. The question is... do you?Disk thrashing is crazy on Vista, I had to turn off Superfetch to get it to settle down, it was thrashing 24-7 for no clear reason at all. Also all the pop up warnings get old really fast. It also seems to lock me out of directories depending on what user is logged in. I attempted to back up all my personal files once and 90% didn't copy do to some user security in Vista, but the silly thing is if I boot in XP I can see anyones Vista files. If one is building a new machine, I'd probably put Vista on the new, otherwise I'd stick with XP. I really don't see anything in Vista that is worth paying for if you already have XP.The Register is anti MS and anti Intel at best, I wouldn't put too much merit in what they say. I think they usually refer MS or Intel as the vole?If you can get a hold of Vista install DVD, you can try it out for a couple weeks as you have up to 30 days to activate, if it looks good buy a copy and activate your install just by typing in the new serial.
  8. >Greetings>>I found this plane two weeks ago in my search for good>military planes, and I can tell you that after checking out>over half a dozen of them, this is the absolute best flying,>best sounding, best looking one you will find. It works>great; its FSX addaptation is excellent -- better than some>FSX default planes!. I found it here:>http://www.simviation.com/fsxmilitary5.htm....Glad its working for you too, I could not understand why Bob could not get his going, as I just installed and it as perfect.I'd like to find more repaints for it, a Canadian CF-18 paint would be nice to match the one I seen at the airshow. I just love the plane in FSX and seeing them in person at a airshow is 2nd to none. The power and noise they make are unforgettable!
  9. Thanks Phil, looks good. So glad to see the continued effort by you to keep us up to date. Since I've upgraded to a new PC, FSX has become a favorite as is, the upcoming sp2 improvements and addon's will be icing on the cake :)
  10. UPDATE:Did a install tonight of another quad for a friend, it went perfect this time!FSX never looked so good and ran so fast, and we ran it at stock speeds. This time used a Q6600 with a eVGA 650i MB and eVGA 8800 320MB video card and a Corsair 620HX power supply.Something was clearly wrong with the 1st Q6700 install I reported in the original post of the thread.I can recommend a quad or duo now for FSX, just get a good power supply, I suspect that was the issue with the earlier install.
  11. >Actually, I believe the original is by FS-KBT, and it was>painted by Gary Smith and adapted for FSX Eric Buchmann.>>It bothers me when proper credit isn't given. FS-KBT (Daisuke>Yamamoto as lead) put a lot of work into this plane.>>ThomasGood catch! Great plane, great price.
  12. >Hi. Thanks. That's the one I have but the panel has the old>dsd sound gauge and won't run in FSX. It locks up FSX as the>version of the sound gauge is wrong and it cannot find a sound>file. Best regards, Bob. Sorry, I assumed all would be the same, try the one from flightsim, shows 2nd in the google search here and works fine.
  13. Not sure if we are supposed to mention other flight sim sites, but the file name is fsxfa-18.zip , when I google that it comes right up.
  14. Here's a screenshot of the FSX f18 in action, and a real one below it:http://www.pbase.com/image/83512408/originalhttp://www.pbase.com/image/83512408/original.jpgand a real one to compare:http://www.pbase.com/jackcnd/image/83485945/original.jpg
  15. See my settings post in this thread, you have to do some post install work for 8800's to look amazing, else they look bad:http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...id=410768&page=
  16. We really need a sticky for FSX 8800 setup...Here's how I ended with a great image:1) Add mipbias=6 in fsx.cfg2) Use nHancer to delete the existing FSX and FS9 presets and create a new one:AA Supersampling 8xSGamma CorrectionAniso: 16xTexture Filtering: High QualityNegative LOD Bias: CLAMP3) In FSX set the Level of Detail radius to large.Turn AA off. Filtering to Trilinear or Ansi, Frame rate 25.That works great for me with most settings up high, its night and day compared to default settings.
  17. After flying a couple hours tonight, got the dreaded OOM error. Was using a F-18 addon aircraft, now sure if that had anything to do with it or not. Had run the fix 10 days ago, this is the 1st problem...
  18. Came across a nice F-18 Hornet for FSX by Original by Garry J. Smith. Adapted for FSX by Eric Buchmann. Can't seem to find a link in the avsim library but if you google FSX f-18 it comes up. Just seen one at an airshow so was fun to fly it in FSX.
  19. For most areas, I like FSX just as is, its so much better than FS9 as far as mesh, and landclass. If you add 3rd party mesh you may start getting issues with some airports, rivers etc. The only addon I have is Vancouver+, as its an area I like to fly close to home, and improved on the rivers and landclass greatly that was lacking in the mountains. I like Holgers releases as he takes the time to do a area correctly.
  20. I found it's just a simple as increasing the FSB, you can find many guides on the internet.Example:Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 is rated at 2.66GHz is 333 x 8. I upped the FSB to 400 and the chip ran at 400x8 = 3.2Ghz. It ran stable for a week, but had some problems booting at that speed so I had to drop it back to 388x8=3.1Ghz, now its rock solid. If you really want to get into overclocking, you can modify voltages, memory timings etc. I think the key is to get lucky with the CPU you buy and have memory and a MB that supports the faster bus timings. Be careful as when you start adjusting bios settings like those your risk of a problems or permanant damage increase.
  21. nhancer made my FS9 night and day better.Seems the latest drivers lock out AA on FS9 with 8800 cards, but using nHancer to delete the fs9 preset and making a new one with AA active worked great.
  22. Congrats Jay!I felt the same when I setup my duo system. FSX is amazing, but only on new hardware.Try adding the mipbias=6 line, to your config should clear up the blurries at a slight smoothness cost panning, and I had to use nHancer to get AA to work properly too.See:http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...id=410425&page=
  23. I went with the Corsair, after reading their support forum. It seems fine, quiet, does generate warm airflow.
  24. Looking to add a more powerful PS to my system, I found as I added HD's and DVD burners I had problems restarting. Using a P5K MB kept getting a 'overclocking failed' even when not o/c. So I disconnected the extra HD's and DVD burner and it boots fine.Want to get a new PS but the watt math does not add up?Example: The OCZ 600W has 4 12V rails @ 18A yet the Corsair 620W as 3 rails @18A yet rates higher?OCZ GameXStream 600W shows:Output:+3.3V: 36A+5V: 30A+12V1: 18A+12V2: 18A+12V3: 18A+12V4: 18ATotal Output: 600Wand the Corsair HX620 shows:Voltage / Max. Current+3.3V: 24A+5V: 30A+12V1: 18A+12V2: 18A+12V3: 18A-12V: 0.8A / 9.6W+5Vsb: 3A / 15W+3.3V, +5V Combined: 170W+12V Combined: 600WTotal Power: 620W
