Anisotropic Filtering Setting Not Working
A little update: I was able to get Anisotropic filtering working by setting it directly in the Nvidia control panel. I set it to 16x instead of application-controlled and now it is working in X-Plane. If you have an Nvidia graphics card, try setting Anisotropic filtering directly in the Nvidia control panel to 16x and see if it works...the setting in X-Plane doesn't work for some reason (at least for myself and the above posters).

Anisotropic Filtering Setting Not Working
Hello, I am having an issue with the Anisotropic filtering setting in XP10 and am wondering if anyone has a solution. I have the anisotropic filtering setting set to 16x, but textures look extremely blurry when viewed from the side. As an example, the side of the default C172 looks crisp and sharp when viewed straight on, but as I rotate the view towards the nose or tail, the textures become increasingly blurry. Another example: When I am in the 3D cockpit on a runway, the runway textures look very blurry and not sharp at all. If I look straight down in the external view, the runway textures are very crisp. The anisotropic filtering setting is not doing anything at all for me. It doesn't matter if I set it to 1x or 16x...it has no effect. In my Nvidia control panel, I have Anisotropic filtering set to application controlled. Thanks for any help, Robert

Do any of you not use FSUIPC and windows 8?
I also have controls disabled in FSX and use FSUIPC exclusively. OS is Windows 8.1 Pro. Everything seems to work perfectly...no issues with control surfaces, autothrottle, or autopilot. Robert Deichert

How close?
Personally, I position the viewpoint so I can see the MCP and the entirety of the LCD displays on the captain's side. This generally means moving the viewpoint up two notches, back two notches, and to the right until I can see the entire MCP. I then pan the viewpoint down until I can just see the bottom edges of the LCD displays. This way, my view looks like a traditional 2D panel view, but it is in the VC. I then use the built in view presets for the overhead and pedestal.

Winglets on new Jets
Newer boeing aircraft (such as the 787, 777, and 747-8) use raked wingtips instead of traditional winglets that we are used to seeing. I'm not sure exactly what the benefits are over traditional winglets, but below is a link to a wikipedia article on raked wingtips.http://en.wikipedia....e#Raked_wingtipIn this picture, you can see the raked wingtip at the end of the wing: http://www.aerospaceweb.org/aircraft/jetliner/b767/b767_13.jpgRobert Deichert

Why fly with 2d panel?
Personally, I fly using a combination of the VC and 2D. My main cockpit view is in the VC, and I manually adjust the cockpit viewpoint so it is facing the main panel, and it actually looks like a 2D panel, but it is 3D and in the VC. I then use the 2D panels for the overhead, pedestal, etc. Or, if the developer has provided built in views for the overhead and pedestal (like the JS4100), then I will use those viewpoints for the other panels.

NGX+ iMac = true?
A PC with the same specs will perform identically. Boot Camp is nothing more than a tool that allows you to partition your hard drive, you are creating another partition. You then boot into the Windows install dvd just like you would on a PC, and install Windows onto that partition. When you turn on your computer, you select which OS to boot into. It is a multi-boot setup.

A Quick Graphics Card Question
My main machine is a Mac Pro, and the only relatively recent Nvidia card available is the GTX 285. Thanks for the information. Yes, I do run other games. I have read that the HD5870 is roughly equivalent, in terms of performance, to the GTX 285. I am not sure if that is true or if it applies here. Thanks again,Robert Deichert

A Quick Graphics Card Question
Hi Guys,I posted about this in the Video Hardware forum as well, but I thought it might be worth asking about in the PMDG forum too, especially since the NGX seems to be right around the corner.Would it be a good idea to upgrade from a Radeon HD 5770 to either a Radeon HD5870 or Nvidia Geforce GTX 285? Those are my only choices. The HD 5770 card struggles to deliver good performance when in bad weather. Spec-wise, both the 5870 and GTX 285 are better than my 5770, but would it be worth upgrading to either one of those? Would the Nvidia card perform better in poor weather situations? Thanks for any suggestions,Robert Deichert

GTX 285 or HD 5870
robbier replied to robbier's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcHi Guys,One thing I forgot to mention in my original post is the reason I can only get the HD 5870 or the GTX 285 is because I am running a Mac Pro system, with Windows 7 x64 installed on its own partition with FSX. Right now, the only cards available with Mac firmware that are better than my 5770 are the GTX 285 and the HD 5870. My big complaint with the 5770 is the horrible performance slowdown when flying in dense clouds. I have heard that, in general, Nvidia cards don't suffer from this problem. Also, the 285, although a few years old, seems like it is a bit faster than the 5770 and might be worth upgrading to. If anyone has any thoughts, please let me know. I can sell my current HD 5770 for about $200 on ebay, so I might be able to get a used Mac GTX 285 for a relatively inexpensive price after the $200 from selling my HD 5770.Thanks again,Robert

GTX 285 or HD 5870
Hi Guys,I currently have an ATI Radeon HD 5770 card with 1GB RAM. I am noticing that, under heavy weather and cloud conditions, my FPS suffer quite significantly. I would like to upgrade my graphics card to hopefully get rid of this performance drop in cloudy conditions in FSX. The two cards I can choose from are the ATI Radeon HD 5870, or the Nvidia GTX 285. I would like to mention that I have been running FSX on this ATI 5770 for a few months now, and I am completely happy with the video quality. I am fine with multi-sampling AA, and do not need anything better. With that in mind, which card should I go for? I know that the 5870 is a newer card, and according to the specs it should be quite a bit faster, but is that still true when talking about FSX performance? Which card will give me better performance (and little to no performance drop in cloudy situations), keeping in mind that I am sticking with multi-sampling AA and won't use super-sampling?Also, I do play other games on this machine. They aren't the most graphically intense games, but I do use this system for things other than FSX. Things like Civilization V, The Sims 3, Live for Speed, and some others. One more thing - I can only upgrade to the GTX 285 or the HD 5870. Those are, unfortunately, my only two options at this point. Thanks for the help,Robert Deichert

42 inch sharp Aquos LCD television and the NGX
Since the resolution is most likely 1920x1080, your graphics card should be able to power it no problem. My 24" monitor has that same resolution, and I get great frame rates. Remember, it's not the display's size that matters, it is the resolution. Although that display is 42", the resolution is relatively small at 1920x1080, so any graphics card should be able to power it.Robert Deichert

Externalities and the NGX
If the wings are being built into the VC model, then shouldn't the interior sounds play while using a wingview (in the VC)?Robert Deichert

Crash To Desktop Referencing "PMDGMD11.dll"
Hi Guys,I was about to intercept the localizer at KTPA, and just after pressing the "NAV" button, FSX crashed with a fatal error message referencing "PMDG_MD11.dll" (in the gauges folder). Here are the error logs: "Fault bucket 1206006660, type 1Event Name: APPCRASHResponse: Not availableCab Id: 0Problem signature:P1: fsx.exeP2: 10.0.61637.0P3: 46fadb14P4: PMDG_MD11.DLLP5: 10.0.61355.62P6: 49b7c81dP7: c0000005P8: 00118301P9: P10: Attached files:C:\Users\Robert Deichert\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\fsx.CFG.txtC:\Users\Robert Deichert\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\dxdiag.txtC:\Users\Robert Deichert\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\scenery.cfgC:\Users\Robert Deichert\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\fdr.datC:\Users\Robert Deichert\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\dll.xmlC:\Users\Robert Deichert\AppData\Local\Temp\WER8C1C.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xmlThese files may be available here:C:\Users\Robert Deichert\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive\AppCrash_fsx.exe_a4f0d2f6b2b416894fffa9eba2a3cd8b9f376a0_0840b30dAnalysis symbol: Rechecking for solution: 0Report Id: 0629da94-275c-11e0-9022-d8a25e8a8ba2Report Status: 0"And - "Faulting application name: fsx.exe, version: 10.0.61637.0, time stamp: 0x46fadb14Faulting module name: PMDG_MD11.DLL, version: 10.0.61355.62, time stamp: 0x49b7c81dException code: 0xc0000005Fault offset: 0x00118301Faulting process id: 0x264Faulting application start time: 0x01cbbb4bc9bc8b98Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\fsx.exeFaulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\GAUGES\PMDG_MD11.DLLReport Id: 0629da94-275c-11e0-9022-d8a25e8a8ba2"After I got the error message, I also got this message/error: "This feature requires that {smart assembly} is available on this computer"My system specs are in my signature if you want them. Thanks for the help,Robert Deichert

A question for iMac users
If you are truly running FSX via boot camp (that is, natively off the hard drive, having to select which OS to boot from when the computer starts) then you should have no compatibility issues as it is running natively off of the hardware. As long as you install the graphics card drivers in Windows 7, the performance shouldn't be too bad either. As I said, I have run FSX on a very similar iMac (the i7 model with the HD5750 graphics card) and the performance was actually very good with sliders up high, as long as you turned the cloud density down.

A question for iMac users
I don't think overclocking is necessary at all, I am running FSX right now on a 2.8GHz Xeon processor. I did a flight yesterday in the PMDG MD-11 and I was getting between 25 and 30 FPS. This was with sliders up very high, good details, REX, GEX, and in San Francisco.Regarding the iMac, I have personally run FSX on that exact machine. It actually runs very well, just don't turn the clouds up too high.

A question for iMac users
Again, there is absolutely no emulating involved. Windows runs natively, directly off the hard drive and hardware, and when you boot your mac you have to select which OS to boot into. A mac is just a PC that is able to run OS X. It has the same PC parts, RAM, video card, etc., but it is simply able to run OS X. I can try and grab a screenshot later on to show some frame rates I am getting.
-
A question for iMac users
That is completely false. Where did you get that information? Boot Camp is simply an application that lets you partition your hard disk, it does absolutely nothing in terms of running the Windows operating system itself. You quite literally install Windows directly onto the hard drive by booting from the installation DVD just like on a standard PC.To the original poster: I have run FSX on multiple mac machines, including a 2008 iMac, a 2010 iMac, and now a 2010 Mac Pro. They definitely can game and perform very well! Again, please be aware that boot camp, contrary to what most people think, is NOT a "layer" or emulator on top of OS X, it is simply a way to get Windows installed. After that, Windows runs natively as if it were on a standard PC.In my 2008 iMac, I had an Nvidia 8800 graphics card which gave me about 20FPS in FSX. Now, in my newer mac with an ATI Radeon graphics card, I am getting extremely smooth frames (at least 30FPS, I don't know the exact number because I have my frame rate lock set at 30) with settings turned up very high. And this is with PMDG addons, REX, GEX, and others. Trust me, you won't be disappointed! I also run other games on my Mac including CivilizationV, and I can turn all settings to high and not have any problems. I also run a racing game, Live For Speed, and all settings are turned up as high as they can go and I am getting over 100FPS. This is with 8X Anti-Aliasing turned on in the ATI control center.Robbier

Nvidia 8800M GTS vs. Radeon HD 5750
Hi guys,I am currently using an iMac with an Nvidia 8800M GTS graphics card with 512MB memory. I find that it runs FSX well with a Core 2 Duo CPU at 3GHz. I am going to get a replacement machine this weekend, and the replacement machine will have an i7 processor at 3GHz, and a Radeon HD 5750 Graphics Card with 1GB of memory. I realize that the Radeon HD 5750 is a low end card by today's standards, but how will it compare to my three year old 8800M card? I also assume that the i7 will give me a performance increase over the Core 2 Duo, correct? Thanks so much,Robert Deichert

FSX Crash Referencing nvd3dum.dll
Hi guys,Over the past few weeks/months, I have been getting a large number of crashes in FSX with the message "FSX has stopped working." I went into the event viewer, and it seems like every time this crash occurs, the faulting module is "nvd3dum.dll." I have done some research, and it seems like this is due to a video card driver issue, and is fixable by simply updating your drivers. However, I do have the latest Nvidia drivers yet the problem still persists. I know for certain that this has not been going on for a very long time, as I said it probably started to occur frequently about 1 month or two ago. It has gotten to the point where FSX will crash with an error referencing nvd3dum.dll at almost any point during a flight. I was on approach into KBOS and I got the error, and it was very frustrating. Just earlier today I got the error right after landing a Citation in Hawaii. If anyone has any solutions or suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.Thanks for the help,Robert
