  1. No, it isn't. HOME and PRO are both set to always automatic. The only difference is that PRO has the ability to "defer" updates for a certain number of months. This means that the updates will not install right away, but rather, later. (Also, keep in mind that PRO has the Group Policy Editor, which does contain a setting for turning off automatic updates... However, I don't think it works.) This does work, but the problem is that you will no longer receive security updates (Which, to be honest, should be the only thing that Windows Updates pushes out). It's funny how wrong MS is in regards to updates. They think that by forcing updates, everyone will be on the same version. As a result, many people will simply turn off updates. They messed with something that has been the same since XP (maybe even prior). This is the result.
  2. This seems to be a glitch in the "Get Windows 10" utility. The utility was recently updated (it looks a bit different than it was a week ago) so that's probably what caused it to show the 980TI as incompatible. Regardless, this is only for the upgrade and it doesn't change the fact that Windows Updates will still force you to get driver updates, even if you don't want them.
  3. I've read about this. This is definitely a big issue that MS is ignoring. It's also a problem that the "Device Installation Settings" doesn't work to stop driver updates.
  4. This is only for W10 Pro (because of the GPE), and in my findings, it doesn't work. Maybe because it's still a beta, I don't know. Did you not see my pictures above? Nobody is talking about how to disable security updates. Everyone wants to disable driver updates. My pictures above are just to show that the setting doesn't work.
  5. Well, I guess we were all wrong about this. I tested it myself and it looks like WU will download drivers regardless of the "Device Installation Settings". A lot of people are having this issue too:
  6. If you call MS, they can reactivate the key for you.
  7. What are you talking about? I'm just showing you what the window looks like. Whenever you plug in a USB flash drive, that appears and it will try to get drivers from Windows Updates. I am wondering if the setting that someone mentioned above affects this process, since technically all drivers come from Windows Updates.
  8. I admit this is much better, but I still haven't had the chance to test it out. I'm wondering if by disabling the setting via this "Device Installation Settings" thing, will it disable this, whenever you plug in anything USB? Well not really EXACTLY like W7... W7 used to put driver updates in the "Optional updates" section.
  9. I saw this yesterday, and I believe that may solve this issue. However, what if this impedes USB drives from installing correctly the first time you plug it in? What "drivers" is this setting talking about, drivers for hardware in the system or plug and play devices?
  10. If any of you have any questions regarding Windows 10, or the updates scheme, or the free upgrade, or compatability, or anything, I suggest you make a post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/windows/comments/3dn8xz/if_you_have_any_questions_about_windows_10_ask/ A MS employee has been answering questions about W10 all day today. There's lots of good information in this post.
  11. Exactly! I have no problem with automatic security updates... I just don't want automatic driver updates!!!
  12. Looks like MS has edited the Windows EULA to allow them to install updates without ever asking. http://www.theverge.com/2015/7/17/8987549/microsoft-windows-10-automatic-updates
  13. Defer =/= Choosing updates. Updates in W10 Pro are like taxes, you have to do them eventually, but not as soon as possible.
  14. ... My point was that Enterprise is not available for the "consumer". Think of Enterprise as Prepar3D (but impossible to buy). The public release is already available. The RTM was released yesterday.
  15. Of course the Enterprise edition can select updates.... But who the hell is going to use the Enterprise edition on their home computers?
  16. May seem ridiculous, but honestly that's not a wild speculation. For example, the new (and I'll say terrible as well) Office products, Office 2013, are a subscription service. This angered a ton of people who preferred the traditional, pay-once scheme. Of course, Office 2013 is still sold as a "one-time" purchase, but this "one-time" purchase gives you a license for only ONE computer. In the past (Office 2010 or 2007), the "one-time purchase" of $150 would give you a license for THREE computers. Anyone with half a brain wouldn't pay $150 for ONE license of Office, when in the past it used to be THREE. It's obvious that MS is really wanting people to use their subscription and account service. They're shoving it down everyone's throats.
  17. Well, Jim, Gerry, et al... The latest build was released today, and it's the RTM build. I can tell all of you that you are not able to select updates in Windows 10, whether you have Home or Pro editions.
  18. Valid statement, but with Microsoft, there seems to come a point where "innovating and moving forward" collide with ease of use and familiarity (See: Windows 8.0, Microsoft Flight, Office 2013). I honestly don't think that those millions of people still on XP give a rat's &@($* about losing updates.
  19. You don't. If you want to clean install, go to the Settings "app", click Recovery, then Reset the computer.
