Totally agree with you Kevin, if the basic planes came with missions of the same quality as the kyaker rescue mission, I would probably own them all. Even if they had their own hoops course I would own at least one of them. But as is, I am not sure what I would do with them aside from a few awards/achievements.

A user had made a video with the basics of VOR navigation, but for the life of me I can't find it. You can also check out some videos made with FSX, the principals are the same. If I get a wild hair I will make some videos that follow the tutorials that were created from this topic.

I for one am really glad for the lack of GPS in Flight at the moment. I would have never learned any of this stuff and would have been worse off for it! It really adds a lot of depth to the game, and flying jobs with the destination marker disabled, using only VOR navigation is a lot of fun.

Example of finding VOR intersections with http://skyvector.com/ Here is an example of how to use SkyVector to find intersecting VOR radials, using the old Kona VOR: 1) Right click the first VOR that makes the intersection, add to plan (IAI - old Kona VOR in this example) 2) Right click the intersection you are interested in add to plan, this is your destination (PHMU in this example) 3) Right click the second VOR that makes the intersection, add to plan (ITO in this example) #4a and 4b is the outbound radial from VOR 1 #5a and 5b is the inbound radial from VOR 2 6) To get reciprocals of these values, hit "Reverse"

After playing around with VOR navigation a bunch today, I figured out a way to do it using SkyVector. Instead of making a flight plan that includes airports, you make a flight plan that includes your VORs as start/end points and the intersection you are interested in flying to as a way point. This wil give you the intersecting radials for both VORs. This was actually quite handy, as I could use SkyVector in the Steam overlay browser, quickly going back and forth between mapping my jobs in the planner, and dialing in the radials to practice. Even when I had to use the Kona VOR, I could drop a waypoint on the GPS coordinates where it used to be since it is still on the chart, and get a radial from that spot. Even did a job to Hilo in dense fog using VORs and the apporach plate for Hilo's ILS sucessfully.

How are you guys determining what radials you need to follow? Paper maps and a protractor?

To get serious for a moment, and to make my point explicit... There is only one relevant data point to determine if a software product is successful: "Is this product producing profit?". Unless they make this information public, any amount of analysis based on any external observations is simply conjecture. The only data that provides insight into the health of the product is a comparison of sales goals vs. actual sales data. But, that's not very fun, and you can't play the conjecture game that way! So to get back on topic, I will throw my fortune telling into the mix as well: Because Flight had a short development cycle, and lack of content available at launch, Microsoft recouped their development costs of Flight in the first month by sales of the Hawaii Pack. Since they have a small team of content developers, their overhead to produce content is very low, so every DLC is basically pure profit to them. Based on these observations, it is clear that noy only is the product healthy, but the user gained by the Steam release turned what was a profitable game into a runaway success from a business prospective and will soon rival the Office suite in profitability.

So the old tried and true method of 100% pure conjecture based on an absurdly small, and mostly irrelevant data set, got it :Just Kidding: I am only teasing of course. Mostly. :Big Grin:

If all I played was the Icon on the Big Island, I would have the same view that so many hold. It is clear many people haven't scratched the surface of Flight based on the posts made here. Thankfully once I bought the rest of the islands and flew the RV and the Maule, I found a game with much more depth and richness in almost every way, the fidelity of the flight models, the challenges and jobs, and the islands themselves. To me it seems like the free content was purposefully simplified, and the game would have gone over better with simmers had there been some "advanced" content in the free product.

I am not sure that it is turned off automatically, since I did it all manually. I am not sure that it does since you have to keep it in test signing mode to run the drivers as well, not just install them. I use a Microsoft Life Cam NX-3000 that I had laying around.

Leaving test signing on leaves you open to allowing malware to install unsigned drivers (low level code) on your machine. If you also have UAC turned off, you may not even see a notification that something is trying to install unsigned drivers. It is probably a good idea to turn it off, but that being said I leave it on. But I also comfortable with reinstalling my OS at the drop of a hat as well, should the worst happen.
