  1. I thought the same, it would be neat. GSX does seem to provide an APU whine, but only after you shut down your engines, but not before the flight, at the gate. I'm sure I've seen the sound file in the coatl/GSX folder. There is no sound associated with the APU in FSX so you couldn't just assign it to the plane's sound folder. You could swap it into something else, though, like the fuel pump, which does have a sound associated with it. So you switch on the APU and Fuel Pump. Then when engines are started, switch off APU and fuel pump. That would do the trick. Not elegant, though!
  2. Ah yes, I have the update. I wonder if I might be able to simply duplicate the tanker trailer for all fuelling operations. Good point. I'll have a play tomorrow.
  3. I think if you want AI traffic, it shouldn't be for eye candy, its all part of flying. Go arounds, queues for take off, its part of my flying experience. Cant you lower the sliders?
  4. Ha the thing about GSX though, is that it creates a fuel truck apart and seperately from the FSX fuelling system, and sends this unique truck to your plane.
  5. I have GSX and love it. But the fuel truck is US style, different from the flatnosed European trucks we have. I also have REX Worldwide Airports, and that includes a lovely European style fuel truck repaint for the FSX default truck, Now, I'm wondering if, and how, I can swap out the GSX fuel truck with the new REX truck. I can identify the GSX truck in Simobjects, but there are so many versions of the default fuel truck, I don't know where to start. Has anyone messed with the fuel truck before? EDIT: That's assuming the REX European fuel truck 'is' a repaint, and not just a new model, in fact, it does look completely different and has turning wheels etc. I don't have a clue where that lives in my FSX folder.
  6. Seems to have gone well! I set up the following profiles: Airliner 2 engines yoke Airliner 2 engines joystick BN2Islander (lots of start up keys on my overhead keyboard!) Airliner 4 engines yoke Light Plane yoke Light Plane joystick These profiles handle just joystick, yoke and throttle set ups, as well as spoiler controls for the airliners, mapped to my two redundant prop control levers. Seems to work. No doubt I will come across some problems as I test individual planes....
  7. Thanks both. I have spent the evening assigning my controls and keys to FSUIPC, and also implemented Spokes's fix to prevent Windows dumping the default settings back in. My only problem is that I have joystick and yoke plugged in at the same time for different aircraft. Today I am going to set up seperate profiles for yoke aircraft and joystick aircraft so that the axes do not conflict. Fingers crossed!
  8. Spokes, thanks for the advice. What exactly does the power management on the USBs do? What was it doing before I set it to disable? Thanks.
  9. I do have FSUIPC and use it for the tricker assignments or for other controllers, I did try to 'migrate' to FSUIPC, but immediately I got stuck programming my yoke, couldn't find a comparable FSX ATC window command. I gave up!
  10. Hi, I have a setup with Saitek gear, rudders, yoke, throttle, second throttle, trim wheel, Gamepad controller and a labelled custome keyboard with key assignments. For weeks or months the assignments work well. Sometimes I load a flight and they have all returned to default. I takes me 30-40 minutes to reassign everything! It was initially, I suspected, because I was plugging in and out a joystick. However I leave it plugged in now, and to prevent conflicts use the FSX controls section to reduced sensitivity to zero and null zone to 100%, it seems to work well. I am losing assignments frequently though, sonetimes after a couple of weeks, sometimes after a couple of days. I try not to load any applications up while FSX loads as Zi think that may have something to do with it too. Can I save my assignments anywhere? If I could drop in a saved file, I eould be more than happy! Also I considered miving everything over to FSUIPC, but Immediately I struggled to find sone of the basic FSX commands I needed.
  11. The MD11 and the 777F seem to be doing fine without a nose door, though. I guess a big part is the price, lots of freighters seem to be P2F passenger conversions - watch this space in 10-12 years, you might see 380 freighters at some point.
  12. http://www.strikingsoftware.com/forum/index.php?topic=2982.0 It does indeed give you a 3D appeareance anyway, from a couple of hundred feet upwards. It all depends on your wave height and wave speed.
  13. Thanks ! (I have the CS C-130, but can't really remember seeing a ski version.)
  14. You need DX10 Water Configurator, free. There is also just Water Configurator for DX9 I think. Brilliant, just brilliant.
  15. It is an amazing RL plane, but the sim troubles me ... mainly its taxi characteristics, but also because I like to have aircraft that match my full cockpit simulation, which is more of a Seneca, Aztec type set-up. All my controls are in their RW places, and the old Twin Otter has all those levers up top, plus, I have to use the VC to start the thing. I do have the earlier non-Extended Twin Otter, which has excellent taxing characteristics, I might go back and have a look at that.
  16. Agreed, I've only been simming for 3 years, but would never have gotten so far, so fast, without all the wonderful help here. I love AVSIM.
  17. Its. Christmas! And because we rarely have snow in England any more I always go flying in Alaska this time of year with those lovely sunsets, great mountains, glaciers and snowy forests. Can anyone recommend a good ski plane for off airport landings? I see some great frozen lakes that will make nice impromptu airstrips. I really would like a tricycle gear plane though. I have the Carenado 185 Bush, and it is great, but I don't like tail draggers much. Also... for a couple of reasons I won't go into here, I already have Aerosoft's Twin Otter Extended - but I don't fly that anymore. Ski plane Even bettter if skis retract! Tricycle gear Is there anything out there I don't know about?
  18. Me? I'm looking forward to A2A's GA twin, whatever that will be. I have a full cockpit sim set up for a twin, and fly various nice models. But I want an A2A twin....

  20. I had this at the weekend, the freeze with no sound. I happened on a flight plan Id saved at the gate to KLGA. I restarted and flew again, it froze again. I had saved the flight on cruise this time, so ran again. It still froze. I switched off weather, traffic, remoteflight, airtrack.... so next day I deleted the flightplan and tried a fresh flight, same plane. Everything worked fine. Ive just tested another long flight and again it went beautifully. Perhaps you have the same problem, are you starting from a saved game start?
  21. Before I switched to DX10 I routinely saved the flight with a key stroke at the runway, in mid cruise and on long approach, just in case. I dont get OOMS or CTDs anymore though, so I get to finish all my flights, but I know what you mean. few weeks ago Id forgotten to run the FTX Vector Configurator after an airport install and as I touched down on Manchester airport's runway I went straight through it. Wouldnt it be great if ....!
  22. I'd like to say I keep things simple, but I have quite an extensive system and complex, and it works very well .... I did have a year of stability. Luckily I am now sorted! The Orbx updates to FTX Central and this migration thing got me nervous, but now that's sorted and I think I am ready for another year or two of stability....
  23. I have what I need, but run at very moderate settings on DX10, so decent fps everywhere and no OOMs. And I find its only the 'updates' that get me. I've switched all auto updates off, from windows to nvidia, ipad apps to utilities. As I've just found, the 'new' may just wreck your set up...
  24. You know how it goes, you have the perfect setup, layers and layers of cool add-ons, the real 'As Real As It Gets' deal. And then you get the bug, the glitch the awful stutter, the texture screwup from hell that makes your simple pleasure a pain. In my perfect set up I realised that for 'sometime' I had been putting up with pauses of up to 3-4 seconds, frequently, while flying. Testing began, but I couldn't isolate it. I got more and more frustrated with the sim, in the end just not flying for several days, odd behaviour that even my wife commented on! So, I bit the bullet and decided to go scientific and methodical on it, Turned out it was my UK airport package, a new upgrade caused the pauses, only reverting to the previous version stopped the problem. But, that was fine with me. I was happy to fly pause free! My only problem was my home airfield, the upgrade had been nice, and the only way I could keep it, was to set up my own folder in Add On Scenery, copy the upgrade into that and run it as an Add On. But that worked fine. Had the older airport package, but now with my new and funky home-field version. My test flight, checking for the horrible 4 second pauses, was the first flight I had ever had in RL, north out of EGNY Beverley to the coast and back again, I flew in real time with AS16 and REX clouds, it was Guy Fawkes Night with a terrible 25 knot north wind and rain squalls, the sun was setting and the sky purple. I flew up out of my home field, over the wind farms to my home town, out to the lighthouse and began the return journey, the lights had gone on in Orbx England and they looked gorgeous. The sun slipped down behind the horizon and everything slipped from purple to dark blue, tinged with orange. As I approached my homefield, looking for the crescent shaped resevoir that marked the start of the base leg, I realised how bloody awesome FSX was. It was giving me an exact replica of my first flight, I have a full cockpit simulator with a Pearl Throne Thumper (vibration feedback device) for added oomph. The weekend long ordeal of tracking and tracing the glitch was really worth it, my sim is fantastic, the Orbx terrain accurate, the AS16 weather 'atmospheric', and all the little things, the AI software, EditVoice Pack, UK2000 airfields, three screens on Nvidia Surround, Saitek controllers and Air Manger cockpit gauges on iPads all added to a totally awesome flight that lasted only an hour, but totally replicated my first ever RL flight. I might want to kick FSX on the teeth today, but tomorrow, when that glitch is fixed .... it will be totally worth it..... until the next glitch!
