  1. Correct -- (unfortunatly) In MICROSOFT FSX, the HOME points you to a website that displays within FSX, with a url of http://fsinsider.html Dovetail have "taken over"/control (?) the fsxinsider.com which now displays information about their steam offering. Personally: I think it would have been more appropriate for them to have created FSXSeInsider, and left FSXinsider alone, so this would not have happened, but it obviously was too good an advertising opportunity, to be able to directly advertise within Microsoft FSX, their FSX-SE offerings. So what effect does this have on a Microsoft FSX user. - VERY LITTLE. It only altered what appears when you select "HOME" within MS FSX. If you don't like that -- what can you do about it ? You can quite easily change the webpage displayed when you select "HOME" Text edit (Notepad) the file "product" in your FSX root directory. Until recently, you could have change this to "https://www.microsoft.com/Products/Games/FSInsider" -- which was the original FSXINSIDER home page, but now that has also been changed to display FSX-SE info. The original FSXInsider home page appears to have been lost ? Cannot find even an archived copy anywhere :( You could edit "Product" to point to https://www.microsoft.com/Products/Games/FSInsider/product/Pages/default.aspx Which is still the menu page for the original MS FSXinsider You could edit "product" to point to ANYTHING you like -- remember- it only determines what is displayed when you select "HOME" -- it does NOT stop you running MS FSX. If you feel so inclined, you could create your own html page, with whatever you want on it. say call it fsxproduct.html, and edit "product" to point to that FILE on your Computer. You can have complete control over what is displayed when you select "Home"
  2. Almost Correct FSX was planned to be the showcase for PC Gaming Apps using DX10. Despite the early hype, (and in infamous Artist's Rendition of what FSX would look like under DX10), it turned out that game programming for DX10 was no so straight forward, and even Microsoft experienced technical issues programming for DX10, so they backed off with FSX, and announced that FSX would only "Preview" DX10. To run DX10, you need Vista or higher ( No official MS Dx10 for XP) 2 informative links, if anyone is interested in details :- https://www.raymond.cc/blog/easily-install-and-download-directx-10-for-windows-xp/ http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/32-bit-vs-64-bit-how-it-relates-to-video-cards.91260/ Geoff (4 years I'll never get back -but enjoyable times - Beta Testing FSX , SPI, SP2, & X-Pack) ...
  3. Plea to Developers of FSX Addons. Limit .Net to 4.0 . FSX runs on XP FSX-SE runs on XP Therefore FSX addons should also be able to run on XP ! If you create your addons to Require .Net 4.5 (or above), then those still running XP cannot use your addons. Is there really some feature in 4.5 that you MUST use, that is not in 4.0 ?? While number of XP users is declining, is it really worth excluding those XP customers by making your addon require 4.5. ?? Note: The developers of FSX-SE , while compiling with VS2013, limited FSX-SE's .net version requirements to not exceed 4.0, thus making FSX-SE still runnable on XP.
  4. Curt I assume that you have used a flight simulator, and are familiar with the basics. If able, have you considered taking a "Discovery Flight", or even 1 or 2 lessons. eg http://www.teachmetofly.com/ContentPage.aspx?ID=1412 http://www.takewinginc.com/firststep.html etc The best way to find out what it really feels like to be up in a real world GA aircraft, is to experience it yourself. If you do, be sure to let us all how how you enjoyed it But beware -- it can be HIGHLY ADDICTIVE !!
  5. What is the big barrier with developers bringing out a 64bit compatible version of their product ? -- and if they do the work to produce such a product, why should they not expect to be compensated for their efforts ? Yes there will be some 32 bit addons from developers who are no longer operating, so these will not be updated by the original developer to 64bit - but a good opportunity for current developers to step up and produce a new 64bit version. But any current developer, who owns the IP to their product, ($64,000 ?) should be able to produce a 64 bit version. If not, maybe it's time for them to get out of the modern software development world, and take up something less technical.( like sheep farming )
  6. OOMs are "HANDLED" (when they occur, they are handled with that crude "out of memory error" message-- but the exception is handled in an extremely "Crude" and unintelligent manner. Basically, FSX just gives up and terminates. This is unfortunate, as while there may be plenty of "Free memory", none of that fragmented memory can satisfy the failing request for memory. A lot more mileage (excuse the pun) could be got out of FSX (and P3D), with improved memory management. I would assume that both P3D & FSX_SE developers are aware of this, and are working towards addressing this area of the sim.
  7. Tip: Easy way to check XML syntax of FSX xml files. View them in IE or FIREFOX browser. ie (XP) file : / / / C : / Documents%20and%20Settings/USERNAME/Application%20Data/Microsoft/FSX/DLL.XML (remove all Spaces from above : would not display in Forum unless spaces were added :( ) where USERNAME is your appropriate user name. The XML file will display (in syntax sensitive color). If there is a XML Syntax error (The most likely cause of the XML not loading in FSX), you will get an ERROR Message, pointing you to here that syntax error is.
  8. http://flightaware.com/resources/airport/DTW/IAP/ILS+Z+RWY+04L+%28CAT+II+-+III%29/pdf To Intercept the ILS at 2600ft, one would have to be at least 7.7 nm out from the runway. Approach fix "PAYED" is 7.7nm, at 2600ft. If you are closer than 7.7nm @ 2600ft, you will be BELOW the glideslope, and your AP will not automatically capture the glideslope. So the question becomes, how far out are you when the FSX ATC instructs you to "Maintain 2600ft till you are established". There is only a problem if this instruction is issued by FSX ATC when you are closer than 7.7 nm
  9. What is considered "Significant" , which is very much open to interpretation. Clearly the code has been modified to : Allow "steam" compatability. The original FSX Online licensing/registration removed. Steam Multiplayer added. Original FSX Multiplayer removed. (by IP) Gamespy functionality removed. To do this, one must assume they Dovetail has access to the majority of the FSX source code, and that steam is a newly compiled and re-built version ( no trivial task). ( The re-compilation and rebuild may well have resulted the what appears to be a more stable build, especially as far as the OOM is concerned). Maybe they made some "insignificant" improvement to Memory Management ? Therefore "Assuming" that Dovetail can compile & build new version of FSX-Steam, and can do so provided they do "not make significant functionality changes to the simulator", FSX-STEAM is going to be an interesting development of what is technically possible vs what is legally allowed. Whatever the future of FSX-Steam -- it's going to be an interesting next few years.
  10. I would buy the RA version, because it most likely will be 100% "Shared Cockpit" compatible ... (as all previous RA planes have been) -- after all, as a trainer aircraft that so many have learnt to fly in, that learning was done with an instructor - ie In Shared Cockpit mode. A Modern C172, with a realistic Glass Cockpit would be so different to A2A's C172, that it would little matter if one already has the A2A version, one would also want a modern RA version.
  11. Remember : Note: "The game would have used the Microsoft Flight Simulator X graphics engine" Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Train_Simulator
  12. Since, Microsoft is still "selling" FSX in their "Microsoft Store", ( both Standard & Gold Editions) , they should be at least allowing purchasers to Activate it for a few more years (at a minimum), even if they are not giving "online technical support" ??? http://www.microsoftstore.com/store?SiteID=msusa&Locale=en_US&Action=DisplayProductSearchResultsPage&result=&keywords=flight+simulator
  13. Maybe I missed it, but so far, I have not seen a definitive statement as to exactly what DTG has licensed from Microsoft .. MS FLIGHT or MS FSX or MS ESP ( similar to what LM licensed) or The codebase to FSX1 and possibly MS Train SIM (ie The FS "ENGINE") as it existed when ACES closed. Selling FSX GOLD under steam is one thing --- developing any of the existing products is a significant task, and a very different task, depending on what they actually licensed.
