So...Does anybody have an AMD 64 that is running FS9? I am curious as to what the real scoop is.Paul

Interesting article over at Tom's H: "Athlon64 Boards Found Lagging in Memory Support".http://www17.tomshardware.com/motherboard/...ormance-11.htmlWell they took 10 top selling Athlon64 mainboards and stuck takeMS, Corsair, and Infineon memory onto each. Tested whether the system would run right. 10 times out of 30 it did not. Ouch!My point: AMD64 buyers might consider one of the many online sites which will test your new CPU, fan, and memory on your new board before shipping them to you (NewEgg won't).I used Monarch Computer Systems: http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/m...tegory_Code=COMASUS K8V motherboard, 140803-Corsair TwinX1024-3200C2PT XMS, Athlon64 3000+. They assembled, flashed, configured BIOS, tested, packed, and posted. No extra charges for their labor.Works perfect, tremendous framerates, no issues! :D

Have you tried to DISABLE the onbord audiochip BEFORE instaling the soundcard? It's done generaly in the BIOS (press DEL during boot) or via jumper in the motherboard. If you already did this or knew this (and most probably you did) then I apologise for bringing this to your atention, but I don't know your knoledge in this area and I meant to help.:-wave

As for the comments re: cooling on an Athlon, it's really not a problem! Athlons do run a LITTLE higher than a P4 perhaps, with with a well ventilated case, and a decent heatsink/fan assembly, there will be no problem QTek has recently released a neat watercooling solution: fan/radiator that fits into a standard 5 1/4 drive bay, and silicon tubing onto the core waterblock. It's inexpensive too...around

I ask again....Does anyone run FS9 on a AMD 64? I am asking, as I am considering purchasing an AMD 64 for my next computer purchase. It would be a shame if I bought it and it didn't run FS9 as well as the Intel.....Paul

I will by the weekend. I have ordered everything I need. It will take a day or two to put it together. While there are some RAM brands that have reported problems with the AMD 64 MBs, the answer is simple. Buy RAM that is listed in the compatibility list. There are scores of high performers listed.AMD Athlon 64 3400+Asus K8V MB VIA KT800 chip set, onboard (6 channel audio and 3com LAN)Zalman all copper sink and and fan1 GB of OCZ Platinum XtremeGeforce FX5900 Ultra (256 MB)1 80 gig Serial ATA Seagate Barracuda for Windows1 120 gig Serial ATA Seagate Barracuda for FS9Antec Sonata Quiet CaseTwo 120mm Whisper case fansOne Sound proof kit from BestByte (rubber mounts and sound absorbing foam)TDK Indi DVD -/+RWMistsumi FloppyI plan to try Windows XP and WinXP64I will let you know how it works out. If it stutters, I give up, use the machine for programming, and stick to flying in the real world.I have had 3 Pentium and 3 AMD flight sim machines. Performance between like generations has been pretty much the same. Some people swear one is faster than the other, but you would have to do two identical builds of the OS, and fly at the exact same spot (in space) with the same weather etc... It is almost impossible to say. I saw one guy who swore by the AMDs and it turned out he only flew in Kansas, One guy complained about the Pentium, and he love to fly patterns at Hamburg with German Airports added. For the Sites that have posted one way or the other, why are there so many claiming both sides if there is that much of a difference? As for the bench marks, I am not running bench marks, I am running MSFS2004. That is all that matters to me (for this machine). (Taxi at KORD, that is a bench mark!I have been partial to the AMDs. Just seems like the machines I build with them have less problems. I know that it is the machine, not the chip, so that point is moot.I have got my fingers crossed. If it gets 60 FPS in COF, it will still probably only get 20 FPS in CFS3. Is it me or is there something wrong with that flight sim?More later.Dennis MitchellCurrentlyAMD XP2100+Ausus MB1 Gig of DDR Kingston RAMGeforce FX 5900 Ultraand no problems, just want more processor to add more scenery and mesh.Second AMD machine wunning Jeppesen Flite Star IFR connected with Pete Dawson's GPSOUT (Thanks Pete) and FS Meteo connected via WideFS. I'm going to upgrade to XP 2700+ and 512mb ddr333 this week. Do you guys think this is sufficient? I currently have 2000+ with 1gb sdram and I need to have almost everything off to run PMDG 737 with 20% UT-AI traffic. Not very pleasant.

I have worked on Athlons in the past, and I have always found something doesn't work right because its an Athlon. I am very partial to P4's, and that is what I recommend to anyone looking for a computer.

fast of the fast is the AMD64 right now, and concidering what it is, its a reasonable price.I dont think anyone really knows a thing about the intel 64 bit, just going to have to wait and see, amd has 64 bits geard towards gamers more, i think the intel 64s are going to be more for server applications but who knowsbest deal performance/$$ right now is the AMD Athlon-XPs get yourself a 2500+ for like 80$ overclock to 3200 or even keep at stock speeds, and you will have a very comparable system to a p4.my system has a 2500+ at 3200+ (2.2ghz)I have hear recently that the Mobile Athlon-XP 2500+ can be clocked up to 2.6ghz with stock air cooling.

Very difficult question to get an unbiased answer. Those using Athlon or Pentium have paid the big bucks& are very loathe to even think they might have made a mistake. It's similar to vehicles. Few guys I know willever admit they made a mistake with their vehiclepurchase. All reviews are biased to a degree. All are supported byadvertisers. It's hard. You're often flying on a wing &a prayer.Peter Sydney Australia

Just thought I would chime in here. Recently upgraded to an AMD 64 3000 using an ASUS K8V board, 512m Corsair PC3200, and ATI 9800 Pro 128m. Also finally moved up to Windows XP.Man I am very satisfied!!!! The AMD 64 is blazing with the 9800. I have the frame rate locked at 30 and it rarely nudges below. Temps have been very good. I had been using the 9800 on an AMD 2700+ under Win98SE. FS2004 worked pretty well, but there were numerous menu glitches, and spuratic lock ups. Decent frame rates in the low twenties. But now I am getting 30 to 60 fps depending on environment, and WinXP is very stable. Now I just need to figure out how to get my CH rudder pedals to work with the Saitek X36 controlers. I know it will because it accidently did during one session. Just need to figure out what caused it.Ooooh and the Legacy flies so smooooth on this new rig. Best regard to all!!Bob C.

Did anyone yet suggest keeping your system? P IV 2.4GHz 533FSB 512MB DDR PC2700 seems quite a good system to me! I run a P IV on 2GHz with FS9 and add-ons like PMDG 737NG and only get slow frames (5

Hi,I do run a 2700+ with 1 GB RAM - I strongly suggest You should invest in another 512MB (so You'll have 1GB, too), that made a big jump on my XP system. The processor itself should do the job, but compare prices, You might get a 2800+ with the faster, newer Barton core for the same or even smaller price! You might also check if You acquire a decent graphics card for a good price - check tom's hardware, they had a test when the 9800XT/5959 Ultra came out with FS benchmarks as well. But don't get disappointed if You do not achieve that rates, they only tested with default scenery. The performance on my sys (bear in mind I have a 9800pro) is very good, locked at 30fps, lots of customized AI-traffic (100%). At EDDF (where I live and from where I virtually fly), I use the complex SimFlyers scenery with at least 40-50 Ai aircraft present at any time, the freeware city buildings, a scenery called "Feldberg" (shows a unique t-com complex on the highest mountain in the vicinity), the german river fixes by Rainer Duda, a freeware mesh and a small scenery done by me depicting some local landmarks, buildings end stuff. Most of my addon-scenery is not done by GMAX or compiled with the new BGLC so should be more hungry than the newest projects. Frames seldom go below 25fps, but I degraded clouds textures and only use 15% 3-D clouds.Approaching the new German Airports 1 sceneries at EDDS or EDDM, there's hardly any impact noticeable.Torsten

Hi All, Have been interested reading this and can relate to many of the points. I have recently upgraded my system to an AMD2700+ with the nVidia FX5600 and 1Gig of RAM. Frankly I was pretty disappointed when I loaded up FS9. Thinking I'd made some big mistakes somewhere - and being pretty Non - computer literate, I started to try to find out what the problem was etc. etc.I've looked through all sorts of pages within the AVSIM forums and have taken much advice over the past few weeks. Most of it related to making the best of the new system. The most important lesson I have learned is that I needed to have a better understanding of my computer - I can't remember all the tweaks and adjustments I've made, but in essence they have been to get rid of stuff slowing the system down that; a. I didn't know was there and; b. I didn't need. Then there were the tweaks etc. to optimize the Operating system (Windows XP) the Simulator program itself - the settings are pretty complicated to the likes of a chap like myself. In conclusion I now have a GREAT system with excellent fluidity and smoothness - lots of add-ons and mesh/aircraft/scenery. With locked frame rates (set at 30) it rarely drops below unless in heavy cloud - In the unlocked setting, the system runs between 60-100fps the majority of the time. Most slider in the max settings.I'm still learning but the process has been well worth while and I felt it might be of use to pass on my experience - i.e. it wasn't so much I'd got the wrong kit - just that I didn't know enough to set it up properly!!Regards Blue.
