3-D. Is it worth it?

Featured Replies

I would suggest Manny that you try 3-D for free first to see if the effect is what you want and you can live with it.Remember that the shutter glasses really need a monitor refresh rate of around 100 Hz from what I have read.To try out the 3-D effect serach the web for 'Anaglyphs' or 'Anaglyph glasses'.These are the Cyan/Red cardboard glasses you used to get many years ago in cinemas when they started to show 3-D films, many web sites offer them for free. You also need stereo drivers for your graphics card and the version of those drivers must match the standard drivers, at least for Nvidia.IIRC the latest stereo drivers for Nvidia was 45.23.The loss of some colours with the anaglyph glasses is not that noticable to me but I am sure the shutter glasses do give a better image - they should they cost enough :-)Remember also that your fps will take a hit because basically the scene is drawn twice.HTH

Hi!I got the wired version and here are some impressions:1. I have no problems installing them + using them (I think around 5% might not be able to see 3D with such glasses/ or the red-green glasses)2. The drivers were just updated to the 56 series, so you will be quite up-to-date3. The effect is impressive - you can modify the 3D depth, gamma and switch the 3D on/off with a user-configurable hotkeyBUT (and now comes my difficulty...) FOR ME it doesn't work in FS04 somehow - tried several resolutions, windowed/full screen mode with no success. All other games (Golf, Need for Speed, Vietcong) work great.BTW: I got, as mentioned, the wired version which is cheaper and definetly great for me - the cable is very long and very light so one doesn't notice it at all and I don't need batteries as you do for the wireless-versionHope this helps a bit,Stefan

I think the wired is prally better from what you are telling me.. but you say ..that it doesn't work for FSSim 2004.. hmm.. thats a bummer.. That was what I am interested in.Hmmm...:)

>Flight Simulator 2002/2004 does not work with ATI cards. It is a joke, right ??Michael J.

I'm sure FS04 and FS02 work pretty well with ATI cards...thousands of satisfied ATI+FS customers won't be wrong ;-)The question is if the 3D-glasses work with ATI cards - I don't know, I've got a G-Force4Ti@Manny:At least FOR ME it doesn't work in FS while it does in all other games...that doesn't neccessarily mean it doesn't work at all.The wired version is definetly my favorite (due to the lower price and no battery-requirements).Stefan Bergert

>>Flight Simulator 2002/2004 does not work with ATI cards.>>It is a joke, right ??>>>Michael J.>No, it's no joke. I e mailed Edimensional. They replied"At the current time that game (FS2004) is not compatible with the ATI video cards. We are working on new drivers that will be done any day now. These new drivers will fix the problems and get it working. They will be out soon. I have added your name to a list of people that I'll email when the drivers are available. and they advised me that support for"However, that was over a week ago.I then rang them and asked. They then said that there was no fixed date for the release of compatible drivers.

Hi StefanWell for me the question is: "does it help you flying better (approaches)" or is it just a stunning effect? And: Does it have any impact on performance?Would be great if you can answer this for me!Cheers-Andreas

Hi AndreasNo, it does not have any influence on performance (FPS) BUT it has influence on your monitor's refresh rate - so you should at least have a monitor capable of giving you 85+ Hertz (because this rate is divided to get the 3D effect). The PCs performance has no special relation to the glasses. In my point of view it doesn't help you flying better approaches - but it's an effect to make the approaches look more real.If you want to fly better approaches, use better hardware, do more training in all sort of weather and follow the procedures for your aircraft.Regards,Stefan

Stefan,Thanks for the reply! I hardly could find any reviews about the FS used with 3D.-Andreas

By "3-D for free" do you mean that you can just set up your video card to show the two-colour images, or is there some other software application involved?Best,sg

>By "3-D for free" do you mean that you can just set up your>video card to show the two-colour images, or is there some>other software application involved?>>Best,>sgAffirm, at least for Nvidia cards. The latest Nvidia drivers (56.64) also have stereo drivers. So all you need are a pair of those cyan/red glasses and the stereo drivers. You will need to do a bit tuning to set up the 3-D image to your liking and the shutter glasses *may* give you a better image (I don't have them) but at least you get 3-D for free :-)Despite what someone posted it does affect frame rates because the card effectively has to render each frame twice so you may have to reduce your screen res. I would also suggest turning off AA & AF, at least while you set things up and have a first try.The only strange thing I have noticed is that some of my add-on airport buildings do not show as 3-D images, no idea why.HTH
